Consignment Sales Are Turning Me Into a Crazy Person

Posted 11-2-2010 at 06:49 PM by Mom2Finn

I am not that kind of shopper.  I do not go to department store sales.  I do not hit the malls the day after Thanksgiving.  I prefer to order things on the internet.  I do not like searching, or crowds.

Then I had a baby and lost my income.   This was a perfect storm of events that have turned me into a crazed consignment sale shopper.

I hadn’t even heard of consignment sales before I got pregnant.  I was in a baby store, looking at adorable but ridiculously expensive baby clothes when a woman sidled up to me and said “Don’t buy them here…you should go to a consignment sale…”  Then she whispered a website address at me ( and was gone.  It was all very “Mission Impossible.”

Last year's Halloween - $5 costume!

I went to my first one that weekend and I was HOOKED!  It was amazing – everything I was looking for, and at a tiny fraction of the price it would be new.  I started buying everything for Finn at those sales and I haven’t looked back since.

At first it was so easy – I needed everything and I wasn’t picky.  So no matter what time I got to the sale I found tons of stuff to buy.  As Finn has gotten older, though, I have become more and more particular about what I was looking for.  This year I was dying for a tall car garage with ramps.  We had seen it at a friend’s house and Finn had played with it for hours.  I went to sale after sale.  I started showing up earlier, even waiting in line for them to open.  I was setting my alarm for Saturday morning – the one day my husband watched Finn so I could sleep in.  I was suspiciously eyeing the other women – they were all after my garage!

I’ll admit, I was in the throes of an obsession.  But I finally found the garage (for eight dollars!) and it was totally worth it.  I now understand all those other shoppers and the thrill of the hunt.

These clothes might be used...but I still look good!

I am that mom that responds to every compliment about what my son is wearing with “Thanks!  The whole outfit only cost $1.50!”  Of course, when I sat down to sort out his winter clothes I realized that he had about 20 pairs of pants.  It’s just so hard to resist buying them at a dollar a pair.

So, I recommend consignment sales to every mom – great deals at great prices!

Oh you sound like me! I too love them … and buy as well as sell at them every spring and fall. I am looking forward to getting a check for about $300-$400 from the fall sale — it will be used for Christmas and birthdays this year.

I volunteer at a sale here just so I can shop early before the public does and get the best stuff. I’ve learned to assess what I need before I go, make a list, and sort through everything before I hit the register. My friend and I make a girls’ night of it, and have a wonderful dinner after we shop. I love consignment shopping.

ROFL! I’m pouting as I’m going to my last one for the season on Saturday! I too have too many clothes for little girl that cost $1-2 each! And, I have a bunch of stuff all ready to SELL come spring (and definitely more shopping then!). Still in search of a very particular type of baby gate!

LOL! I have also found the love for consignment sales since I had my daughter almost 2 years ago. I haven’t purchased anything resale in I can’t remember how long, including my new little guys entire wardrobe! I have had to stop myself for looking at all the next sizes up because I realized at our last sale, just a week ago, that I almost have his entire wardrobe for this first year complete! I have yet to get to a sale on the first day, but I love Sundays when most items are half off. I have gone back to a sale on Sunday and scored items I wanted but were IMO priced to high. that feels like Christmas!!

We don’t really have a lot of these in my neck of the woods… We call them ‘rummage sales’ and they are typically held at churches. But, we do have a lot of consignment shops. Got a bassinet for $30, barely used.

I love consignment shopping!! Our local consignment kids shop does a quarterly sale (every three months selected items are a quarter) I always wind up with something:D

So glad to know I’m not alone in my bargain hunting, and therefore overbuying. DH thinks I’m crazy :-) I just can’t pass up brand names for a buck! It just feels good to find a great deal!! I can always find something that I can’t live without!

Consignment stores here are all way expensive! The ARC has 1/2 off of 4 colors of tags every Saturday though and if I am picky I can get a whole seasons wardrobe for the kids for $30 or under.

I got my girls consignment shopping in grade school. Now moms themselves they dress their families on a fraction of the cost with top dollar goods. Good stewardship is ALWAYS in fashion…just put some of that saved money away and college becomes a “paid” reality. Go consignment shoppers !

LOVE my consignment sales!!! We have local stores that have bag sales twice and year and dollar sales every season. I’ve gotten tons of brand names and stuff with tags on it!

I am a consignment junkie too! It just feels good to save a ton of $ on baby/kids clothes when they just grow right out of them anyways!

I also like them for myself. I rarely buy anything that is brand new. I like the fact that we can trade or recycle items. It makes you feel good ;)

I’m not sure I know what a consignment sale is, but we do have consignment stores here, and I love them. My youngest is going thru a phase of “outgrowing” shoes after about a week. I’ve picked him up several like new pairs for $2 and then I don’t have to worry about it. Yay for bargains!

Up here we have Mom2Mom sales – sounds like the same thing – and I LOVE them. For less than $20, I bought an entire winter wardrobe for baby #2 (including 2 snowsuits, one unused) and many items for our 1.5 yr old… especially the last hour or so, everyone drops to half off and buy 3 get 1 etc… ridiculously wonderful!
