Four Thieves Vinegar

Late last summer I heard about Four Thieves Vinegar and the benefits of brewing some.  I was intrigued and decided to brew some of my own.  The story behind it and the ingredients vary from story to story, but the benefits remain the same.  By consuming it and using it as a disinfecting spray it helps protect your body from illness.

The just of the story is that there were once four thieves who robbed people during the plague.  People didn’t pursue them at first because they figured eventually they would catch the plague and die as well.  However, they continued robbing homes of those infected without ever getting sick.  Once caught they revealed their secret.  They had made a vinegar that they consumed that kept them healthy and the list of ingredients varies slightly by story.

So, here is the recipe that I use:
Combine equal parts of the following herbs in a glass jar: Lavender, Thyme, Sage, Melissa (Lemon Balm), Hyssop and Peppermint.  Add a handful of garlic cloves.  Cover completely with raw organic apple cider vinegar (I use Bragg’s brand). Put lid on jar and cold infuse (let sit at room temperature) for about six weeks.  Strain off herbs and garlic and store in a glass jar in your cupboard.

You can take this vinegar orally by the teaspoon, use it as a salad dressing, use it in your baths, or use it to help disinfect.  It is both antibacterial and antiviral.

Thanks for the recipe. I know a friend who used this last winter. But she bought it and it was quite expensive. I am looking forward to sharing this recipe with her :)

How much vinegar to herbs, though?

I think I’m going to call my version the Deathly Hallows Vinegar….it’s just the first thing that came to mind, and a much cooler name. :-P

This maybe due to the flea repellant properties of garlic…

Yes, you can, but it’s pricey. :)

You just need to make sure the herbs are completely covered with vinegar.

Ha ha! I love your name for it! :)

Garlic has antifungal properties, so it would work for that too! If you know anyone who has athlete’s foot I bet it would help relieve it by spraying some on it. If you try this let me know what happens. :)

Everyone always thinks it’s going to taste awful, but mixed with some oil it doesn’t taste bad. The smell is wonderful though. :)
