I turned in our home school registration this week so my oldest is now officially in kindergarten. We have been doing work with him since he was four but this was the first year we legally had to register. I am pretty excited for him to be in school.
My husband and I made the choice to home school before our first child was even born. We both knew it was the best choice for our family even though we came from different educational backgrounds. I was home schooled from 6th – 12th grade. I resisted the idea at first but once we started I grew to enjoy it. I was able to learn at my own pace, I took classes that I never would have been able to take in the local school and I ended up graduating two years ahead of my peers with a GPA of 3.9. It felt great and I am really happy that my mom took the time to home school me. It was the best choice she could have made for me. My husband on the other hand went to a public school until high school and then he was in a private school and he hated it. He got through it but admits that he could have done way better if the classes were different and he felt like he had little control over his own education. He graduated with a 3.2.
Our kids getting an excellent education is very important to us. This is the main reason we decided to home school. We both feel that the only way we can make sure this happens for our kids is to do is ourselves. We do not feel that the public school environment is best for our family. We also have religious reasons for our choices but the main and most important thing is that our children get the best we can give them.
Alex is loving school so far. We are focusing on reading, writing and math but we also do fun art and science. Alex loves math and science the most. He enjoys doing experiments and we also bought a family pass to the zoo and science center. I try to keep school fun for him. I want him to enjoy getting his education the way I did. Reading is showing to be a bit of a struggle for him but we are getting there. I make sure to lay on the praise whenever he reads well and be gentle when he needs extra help.
This is going to be a fun and exciting year for our family. I cannot wait to see how he does.
