Since we redid our kitchen countertops last weekend, I’ve had the urge to purge! If I get the urge, I HAVE to take advantage or else it won’t get done. So, purge I have.
As I’ve said before, our house is just too small for us. We would like to put an addition on eventually, but for right now we just have to make do with what we’ve got.
I started in the kids’ room. I think this is the worst room in the house. There are too many toys, too much junk, and too many clothes. I ended up with 2 large black garbage bags for the dumpster, and 5 small grocery bags for Goodwill. There was also a large tub of books that we’re done with, that I gave to my friend for her church. They’re trying to start a new church group, and they needed books for the kids. K is in 3t’s right now; while I was going through her clothes, I found a bunch of 18-24 months still in there! No wonder her shelves were overflowing!
Next, I moved on to the hall closet. This is home to medicines and stockpiled stuff like bug spray, shampoo, conditioner, nail polish, deodorant and soap. I got rid of 2 more large black garbage bags of expired, half-used, and just plain trash. I also donated a grocery bag of stuff from this closet to Goodwill. I do still have 2 more shelves to go through, but I had to leave to get Hunter from school and I just didn’t get back to it yet.
For my next trick, I decided to tackle the coat closet in the entryway. As I was standing, balancing on one foot, on the step stool, to reach the newly discovered plethora of Playdoh, the hubs called and wanted to know what I was doing. Right now? This very moment? Simply trying not to fall off the stool and break my neck. All that fun turned up 2 more large black garbage bags for the trash man (I’m gonna have to bake him something as an “I’m sorry we’re such trashy people” peace offering) and one for Goodwill. I’m sure the hubs was thrilled as well, because he ended up with a lovely pile of stuff to haul to the barn. I was THRILLED to be able to make room in that closet for the card table, and all the folding chairs…my entryway looks SO much bigger without all that sitting around!
Since the kitchen still isn’t put back together from the countertop extravaganza, I couldn’t do a lot in there. What I was able to do was impressive though, if I do say so myself. <Please, someone local, don’t hesitate to pat me on the back, my arm’s starting to hurt from doing it all on my own.> Two drawers and 2 cabinets de-junked. Go me!
The best part of all the decluttering, besides having much more room and being so much more organized, is that I never know where I’ll be dejunking…it just hits, all random like. DH, you may want to put a lock on your bookshelf, seeings as I get all cross-eyed everytime I look that direction…
