We have a rule in the house when it comes to the kids helping in the kitchen, no children are allowed when I am cooking anything with oil. The kids love to help me cook, I start teaching them at a young age to stay away from the oven when it is hot and that only adults are allowed to get items out of the oven or off the stove but I will not allow them in the kitchen at all when I am cooking with oil. I am terrified they will get splattered or the pan will fall. I have been really strict on this and the two older kids know, if oil is out, they do not help mom. The youngest two are still to young to understand the rule but they really have no desire to help anyway so they stay out of the kitchen while I am cooking anyway. We had never had anyone get splattered but I know it can happen so they are not allowed in.
Well, I am sad to say that the no accident trend has come to an end. I was cooking some fried green tomatoes out at my parents house and for some reason the oil splattered. I got hit in four spots on my right arm. I have second degree burns and let me tell you, they hurt like you would not believe. I am really happy that the kids were not out there, they could have gotten hurt a lot worse then I did and I would rather get burned any day of the week then have it happen to my kids.
I will keep enforcing my cooking rule. I showed the kids my arm and told them that this is the reason why I never let them out there to help wit I am cooking with oil. I told them burns like this hurt really badly and even though I love having them help me, I want them to be safe.
