Trying to Beat the Heat

This summer has been a hot one here in Iowa. Everyday for the last few weeks has been in the high nineties and it has broken one hundred a few times. Believe me when I say there is nothing I want more then to sit inside in my nice air conditioned house and avoid this heat wave but I have four kids that get really restless if we do not do something to burn their massive amounts of energy.

We have been spending  a lot of time in the pool. I slather on the sun screen and we head out of a nice refreshing dip in the pool. All my kids love to swim and I will say so do I. It is nice to get in the water, have fun playing and not feel like I am melting being outside.

The days that we do not get into the water we usually go to Dairy Queen. Our local Dairy Queen has an indoor play area. We will get an ice cream cone and the kids are happy to play in the play area for hours. I am more then happy to stay in there since it is nice and cool.

Of course there are times that they just want to get out and play outside. So we are either going outside before it reaches the high temperature or we are staying up a little later and enjoying the evenings. My older two kids really like chasing fire flies. Bed time has been extended several times so they can go out once it is dark and catch fire flies. It is much cooler at night and I still like catch fire flies myself.

We have also gotten a little more inventive with our indoor games. Instead of sitting around and watching television, we are playing board games, having art days, making indoor tents and just trying to have fun while staying cool.
It does look like we are going to be getting a small break in the heat so you can beat we are going to be out enjoying every minute of it.

We are in Iowa too, and I think the relief from the heat we’ve had over the past few days is about to end. :( This week looks to be bad again. Argh. I want to take the kids to the zoo but not when it is soo stifling. Can’t wait for fall!!

I’m almost 39 weeks pregnant so it’s hard for me to even want to step out the door! Let alone stay inside cause my place gets up to 83 easily even with the AC on! My 4 year old doesn’t seem to mind spending most of the time inside luckily. I just wish I had more ideas of what to do to help lower the heat inside.
