Although I do quite a bit of baking and cooking, I have never canned anything before. My grandparents have grape vines that grew an overabundance of grapes this year and they had us pick them and said to do whatever we wanted with them.
The kids were so excited to pick the grapes-and eat more than a few in the process! They decided they want me to make grape juice and grape jelly out of them. Yikes! I hopped on over to Google and read up a little bit to make sure we have everything we need. The website I checked out was pickyourown.org. It’s come up a few other times when I was looking for canning advice (which I obviously never used). My favorite part of the page was in the list of tools you’ll need:
“Blender, food processor or juicer - Yes, you could do it manually, if are only making a small batch, are insane, or you have access to child labor.”
I got a good chuckle out of that.
I have a Magic Bullet that came with the juicer attachment that I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never used. I’m not gonna lie, I’m getting pretty excited myself to use that bad boy! If it works well, who knows what I’ll juice next! On the other hand, I’m a little disappointed that I can’t take off my shoes and socks and stomp the grapes into juice!
We have a “Grape Jamboree” that’s local to us. It’s coming up in the next few weeks, and it’s a great little festival. People get all dressed up in purple and grape costumes, and there really is a grape stomping contest! They have “purple cow” milkshakes made with grape ice cream, grape cotton candy, grape candy apples, and so much more great grape stuff!
I figure we’ll probably drink about half of the juice and then can the rest of it to save for later.
