I had my first appt yesterday, and my next appt tomorrow.

My first appt was a basic pee in a cup, confirm I'm pregnant appt. He explained what I should expect from the practice, when we'll schedule my c/s, etc. My appt tomorrow will be my initial OB visit (I'm seeing a family practice doctor the whole pregnancy. I'll meet with a GYN surgeon at about 6 months) and we'll do all the blood work, initial pap, and an u/s to check on my left ovary (history of corpeus lutem cyst) and to figure out a due date!

I had my first appointment to confirm the pregnancy the day I found out LOL! :) Then because of my previous mc, the dr. sent me for blood work to measure HCG levels and I followed up on that last week. My next appointment is going to be on Monday and I am having my first ultrasound to make sure things look good and see how many babies are in there! I'm SSSSSSOOOOOOO excited!!! :)

Just made my first appointment with the midwife August 2nd. Why did I feel so funny doing that? Its not like they didn't expect me to be calling at some point..........I don't know, that was weird. I still feel nervous about it. What is my problem?

I'm getting nervous about my doctor's appointment on Thursday. I'm really hoping to see the heartbeat on the u/s. With my DS I don't remember being this anxious (and I didn't even get my 1st ultrasound until 8 wks). I just can't shake the thought somethings not right because I'm not sick. I guess I'll find out in 2 days! Ahh I hate waiting!!!

My u/s and appointment with my RE is next Wednesday. I've had two HCG levels drawn so far. After the appointment next Wed. I'll then be released to my OB and probably have an appointment there at 9/10 weeks. Given my age I'd like to have the nuchal scan u/s/test which needs to happen I think between 11 and 13 weeks. Will anyone else be having this? Insurance wouldn't cover it in my last pregnancy since I was under 35.

I had an appt today that I canceled at the last minute because I don't want a sonogram this early (I'm only 4 weeks) and I know you cannot see a baby at 4 weeks, so I'd rather wait than see nothing even though I know it is normal. My OB wanted me to because she thought I got a BFP early- it was 9DPO but that isn't THAT early. I want to wait until 7 weeks so I can see a heart beating. So, I am going in on the 7th for a sono, bloodwork, etc.

It is called the sequential screen ~ it is combination of u/s and blood work.

I met with my midwife yesterday for the first time and I am soooooo excited!!! This birthing center is awesome! There are two birthing rooms and they both have full sized beds and birthing tubs as well as full attached bathrooms. There is a family room that is full of toys and movies for the kiddos and there is a kitchen for us to use. We are allowed to bring and eat anything we want. This is so awesome cause in the hospital they wouldn't even let me have crackers when my stomach was starving! I am in love with my midwife too! She is so sweet and kind. Way different than my male OB.

I met with the ob nurse today ~ I have done it 5 times before, so it was nothing new.

My BP is extremely high though, which she was not happy with ~ so I have to go back to my GP and most likely be on blood pressure medicine for the whole pregnancy :(

p.s. where in Georgia do you live?? I have lots of family and friends in ATL/Duluth area and DH was stationed at Warner Robins for a bit (we lived in Byron - you know where it is? 4000 people - but two waffle houses - one on either side of the highway hehehe)

Shultz- I actually grew up in Gwinnett County near Duluth then went to Atlanta for school (GA Tech) and a few years later we moved down to Warner Robins and both my husband and I work on base. Small world! We are not active duty though, just DOD civillians. So, I know exactly where Byron is! We've been in Warner Robins 3 years now and I'm hoping to leave soon, I'm not so crazy about it. DH is looking for a new job now, but the market is really bad!
Is your DH retired military? Or, still active?
I'm having a hard time finding an OB I like in WR. There really aren't that many options. The one I'm going to now has really really bad reviews online, and I think I'm going to have to go up to a Macon OB.

I just called to make an appointment, talked to a nurse and boy was she surprised when she realized I hadn't even missed my period yet :giggle:. She said they usually don't see people until 10 weeks, but I had a blood clot 3 yrs ago and now I need to be on blood thinners (lovenox) throughout pregnancy, so I'm going to need a little extra attention, lol. Sooo I'm going next Tuesday afternoon. :goodvibes:

Whaaa?! You don't like WR? hahahaha

I'd go to Macon to find an OB as well! ;) We actually really liked the simplicity of life in Byron but the area was not really so nice - same a WR - I think it's only a city because the base is there. I cried when I walked from one end of the mall in WR to the other in less than 2 minutes and there were many empty store fronts. Silly, I know. But I know why you'd like to leave! Do y'all ever eat at Kountry Villa in Byron - it was right around the corner from our house - it's a delish meat and three - mmmm, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. You should go right now.

I worked at the Southland Log Homes right off the highway - I'm sure you've seen it on your way to Macon!

Bryan was supposed to be stationed in WR for 3 years but took an early leave from the Air Force as they had too many young officers and needed more enlisted. I was ready to get settled into a city and STAY, so we decided to leave.

I'm having fond memories though of our short time there though. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Jen- I'm going to have to try Kountry Villa in Byron, we haven't been there. I have seen the Southland Log Homes, that's funny. I don't even attempt to go to the WR mall! They built an outside type 'mall' up in North Macon, so if I want to go shopping somewhere nice we go up there. I'm sure you are not missing the deployments that come w/ the military. I have a lot of friends here at my church that have pilot husbands, and they are always gone! Is your husband an engineer? A lot of the young officers at WR are (so are my husband and I).

My first appointment is going to be August 11. What should I expect at that first appointment? I will be 8 weeks and a few days. Will they do an ultrasound to measure the baby? It's a one doctor office and she doesn't even have nurses, so she does your entire appointment.

Anybody's ob talking about the H1N1 vaccine? I know when the flu was big news, it was also big news for pregnant women. I have a couple friends IRL who got the vaccine - I'm not a big vaccinator so wondering if that's going to come up.

I have my second appointment tomorrow. I'm nervous! Our insurance seems to only cover one large group, where ANY of the OB/GYNs could deliver...or one random doc with a Polish name. (That's how we refer to him.) I really don't want to get another doctor who is obsessed with unnecessary medical intervention, so I don't know what to do. If we go to one of these approved doctors, the insurance will pay 100% (we think). If we go to someone else, they will pay 80%. What do you guys think? Should we pay 20% to go to someone we know will be more open? Ugh, so stressful. How do you all find doctors/midwives/doulas you love, anyway? Do you go to a bunch of places for appointments or just call and see what their secretaries say about their C-section rate?

I feel so lucky to have my OB. I met her at a chamber of commerce luncheon for new doctors in the area. She was introduced by the speaker and they told a little about her life. She is from Jamaica, has 5 children and lives on a horse farm. By the time I met her, I was dropping my old group practice like a hot rock. She is kind and gentle and understanding. I'm looking forward to my first appointment with her as my OB. I have seen her twice for yearly appointments.

So I called the docs office today and set up my 1st and 2nd appointment (just easier to do with your schedule). They say they don't do ultrasounds until 18 weeks. I wondered though... wouldn't this mean we wouldn't even know if we were having a single baby or multiple until then? It just seems silly not to know that. I'm not someone that thinks I need an ultrasound at 8 weeks, but I thought it was pretty normal to have them at 12 weeks now and then the 2nd at 20 wks.

So, after my original spotting and u/s at week 5, my OB wanted to do another 3 weeks out; but I just couldn't wait!

What is it about pg that makes us paranoid/anxious/scary women? My anxiety has been so high - every time I go to the bathroom, I'm checking for spotting. And for crying out loud, it's 95 degrees here, so half the time I think I'm spotting, it's just sweat!! Also, last night I had a horrible nightmare that I miscarried in the toilet in a hotel bathroom in the middle of a formal dance. I was wearing a cocktail dress and couldn't remember anybody's names/hotel room numbers to come help me and I didn't want to leave my stall anyway cause I was afraid someone would flush my baby down the toilet. Ugh. It is frightening what your subconscious mind can come up with.

Anyhow, one of the best things about the private hospitals here is they aren't super busy - so I called and pushed my u/s up 5 days - to today. Since I knew we should be able to see a hb at this time, I knew it wouldn't be a problem with the doctor.

I started crying tears of relief when I saw my baby, the right size, with a strong heartbeat. I was measuring a couple days ahead - 7 weeks 6 days and had a 150 hb/min rate. Just wanted to share my good news with y'all!

U/s's are blessings and curses, ya know? I'm sure pregnant mamas didn't sit around 50 years ago, wondering if they were going to miscarry every 5 minutes.

Yeah congrats on your hb and ultrasound!! I know what you mean about being paranoid. I saw a hb at my 6w ultrasound and now that I'm 8w I'm paranoid again and I have to wait until 11 weeks for my next apt. Ahhh. I can't take it. I'm thinking about maybe buying a home doppler. Has anyone used one w/ any success and how early?

My Sweet Blessings
07-29-2010, 11:24 AM
I am paranoid as well. I go tomorrow for my first ultrasound to date the pregnancy. I am terrified it will be too early for a heartbeat and i will have to repeat the u/s. it's not the having a second u/s, it's the waiting that kills. Had to go through that with my second baby. I am thinking I will be 5 weeks 6 days tomorrow. we shall see. praying for a heartbeat even though it's early! We didn't see one at 5 weeks 3 days with my second, but saw it a week later.

Yes, buy a home doppler!!! Seriously, it's a lifesaver for your sanity. I bought one with my second baby and couldn't rip the box open fast enough. I loaned it to 2 family members and they loved it, too. It's about to go through it's 4th pregnancy :) The one I have I got from a supplier on ebay and I think I paid around $130 for it, but that was almost 4 years ago. I know my doc picked up my son's HB with her doppler when I was 11 weeks, so I am thinking I will be able to around the same time. Some have picked up even earlier. I didn't get the doppler until I was around 12 weeks, so I didn't get to try earlier. I am thinking I will try around 9 weeks. I love having a doppler

Alright ladies so here are my u/s pics! Everything looks good and baby was exact to the dates I have! I am 9wks today! The pics are a bit blurry since they only did an external u/s instead of a vag one so the baby is kind of blurry. But you can see it and and the heartbeat!

I rented a doppler with DD1 and it was really fun not just to hear the heartbeat but to hear the little swishes and thumps with the baby was moving
Once I started feeling the baby moving, I didn't see much use for it anymore though.

I also rented a doppler with DS and enjoyed it. It helped me feel more relaxed when I could find the hb myself between appointments. I'd lost 2 babies before him, so I was a little paranoid. I'm finding that I am still paranoid, so I've already looked in to buying a doppler this time because renting them seems to have gotten a lot more expensive. There is one for sale on ebay that is also for sale on amazon that I'm planning to buy. It's around $54. However, I've promised myself that I won't buy it until my next u/s.... I didn't rent one with DS until the hb had been found in the doctor's office.

I'm sure pregnant mamas didn't sit around 50 years ago, wondering if they were going to miscarry every 5 minutes.

great news! i dunno. i think women in the past didnt know they were pregnant as quickly as we do...but they definitely were aware of miscarriage...i mean, where do you think the wait to tell 'rule' comes from? i know my friend tells me about her mom growing up in ireland and how women waited until they missed two periods before going to the doctor...or even thinking they were pregnant...well that and they found out they were pregnant and went out to celebrate with one last night of drinking...

sounds fun.

as for dopplers...im kind of jealous of you ladies who own one...i'd love to fool around w/ one right now...

I had my appointment today and it was, well, pretty uneventful. She gave me some zofran for the nausea and scheduled and ultrasound for a week and a half from now. I am going to be going crazy trying to wait that long. We are still not sure how far along I am just adding up all the symptoms and such we think I ovulated really late (happened with last ds as well) and so going by what we believe to the the conception date, I am 5weeks 6 days. I just pray that everything matches up and goes ok. After a miscarriage I think you lose much of your sanity when it comes to progressive pregnancies.

So I mentioned this before but I just want to know if its normal or if anyone else has to go this. Next friday I go in for an appointment with just the nurse. I guess she asks me about medical history, maybe tells me a little bit about their practice, probably asks if I have questions. Then I go back in 2 weeks to talk with the doc. He takes blood pressure and does some other gyno things... but no HB and no u/s. Is this normal? Why do I have to do TWO "preliminary" doc meetings? It just seems like they're trying to take my money if you ask me.

I went to see my midwife yesterday. Everything looks good. She did an u/s to check dates. As of yesterday was 8wks 0days. She adjusted my edd to 3/14/11, so not much of a change. Got to see the little one on the u/s, that was really nice. We saw the heart beating, but didn't get a heartrate. My next appointment is at the end of August.
It was really nice talking with her, she said she was not going to put guidelines on my eating and drinking.....cause she knows how hard it is to find ANYTHING to force down. She had really bad m/s too with all her pregnancies, its nice she understands. I however don't think mine is really bad compared to some people.
Anyways, that's how it went. I look forward to going back in 4 weeks to hear the heartbeat.

a lot depends on practice. With my doc, she normally doesn't do an ultrasound unless there is a reason, like bleeding and cramping or not knowing when you conceived. They don't listen for a heartbeat until 12 weeks with a doppler as a general rule since it can't always be heard before then. When I was pregnant with my second child, I was looking into finding a new doctor in town instead of traveling the hour to my old doc. I decided against it because it seemed like all the practices here don't even let you see the doc until you are like 8 months along. A nurse practitioner does all of your visits until then. I didn't like that idea because I needed to know well before who was going to be delivering my child. Needless to say, I made the hour trips to see my old doc. Every practice seems to have their own rules and way of doing things. With my doc (who has delivered both my children and will be delivering this one) doesn't do a preliminary appt at all. Your first visit is with the nurse for the BP, weight, urine, and medical history. Then the doc comes in and does an exam and such. You see the doc from the get go.

Most doctors charge a global fee for all the care. So it costs the same no matter if you go 4 times or 40. Usually at the nurse appointment, they take your insurance info, and then they tell you how much it is going to cost you for the doctor at the second appointment.

glad to see that I am not the only one checking the toilet paper every time I pee! I've even seen my babies heart beating and I am still worried like crazy.

Thanks Carla! This helps. This being my first baby, I'm just not sure what is normal. Obviously when my mom and MIL were having babies, things were different, so I can't ask them. And my BFF is pregnant but her practice is completely different... she's 12 weeks and has already had 3 u/s and heard HB at 6 wks. I just need to learn patience ;) Which, luckily, I do actually have patience... I just think it would be NICE to be able to hear the HB and see u/s before 20 weeks. But in all honestly, I didn't even call the doctors office until about 5 days after getting my BFP... so I must have some patience ;)

no prob. patience is something I don't have :( I used to... then I had kids. LOL I called the next day after getting my BFP. I was seen just 9 days after my bfp. yeah, I have no patience. one of the reasons I stick with the same OB is cause I mostly know what to expect. there is a bit of a twist this time because she is at a hospital I am unfamiliar with. The old hospital took out there giant OB wing and the doctors either went to a different hospital or got their own offices outside the hospital. My OB and a bunch of her coworkers went to the same hospital and are in the same office there. The protocall is pretty much the same, though. I like knowing what's going to happen next. of course, this is my 3rd baby, but I remember not knowing anything my first time. I was always wondering "what's next?". it's a bit of a journey.

I had my first appointment today! It was supposed to just be paperwork and blood work, but I ended up getting an u/s too because of some spotting I had the other night. And I got to see the little baby and heartbeat!!!! It was so wonderful! They gave me a due date of March 28 but the baby is actually measuring about April 2 due date...
They said hcg levels are 37,000 something. They said that was good. I don't know what it means.

I went to the OB today, 10w4d, and got to hear the baby's heartbeat with the doppler! It was actually hard to hear probably because I'm still not that far along. The bpm was 170. Is that too high?

That sounds right! It might come down just a little as you get further along.
DD's was always in the 160's and this little one's was 160 at the 9 week U/S

I had my first appointment today. Just met with the nurse to go over medical history and then get a dating ultrasound. Baby is measuring 8 weeks and 4 days. Due date of March 22nd. The heart rate was 180. I got a cute little ultrasound pic of my gummy bear. :) I see the OB at the end of the month.
