Alternate title: Am I crazy to be wanting to add another project to my to-do list?
:giggle2:
I have two midwives and I adore them both. I have really enjoyed the care they have given me so far and I expect that I will be loving them even more after the birth. I am paying them for their service - of course - but I was wondering if I should be preparing a gift for them as a thank you after the birth.
Have other people done this? What sort of gifts or thank you's have you done? Should I buy something or make something?
And this is where my insanity comes in. I could make something for them. Something cool! I can sew, I can quilt, I could give them fun homemade canned goods. I have plain canvas bags I could jazz up for reusable shopping bags. I have an embroidery machine and could use that on something....
Help give me direction ladies!
Also, in addition to my two midwives they have recently brought on an apprentice midwife. I have only met her a few times, but she will probably be at my birth. She has been wonderful so far and is a very experienced doula so I imagine I'll find her very helpful at the birth too. Should I do something for her on the same scale or slightly smaller?

i love the reusable shopping bag idea - with some home-canned yumminess inside and maybe some custom embroidered dishrags or something like that

I like Randie's idea, and I think making a similar, slightly smaller scale gift for the apprentice would be great!

Agreed-that would be really nice.:) I am trying to figure out something for my doula as well. I'm not too crafty at the moment, and wouldn't be able to first find the time to find all my supplies and then find more time to actually do something, so I was thinking making her a little gift basket.

I'm all for simple so I would just buy a gift card for each for a good restaurant in the area and write them a really nice thank you card. You can always do a smaller amount for the apprentice.

Jamie, you are so thoughtful!
I LOVE the idea of the reusable bags and custom embroidered towels or dish clothes. Its something they could use at home in their personal lives or for something to help out with their midwife duties.

i love the idea, especially if it's something affordable and you are just putting time into it. We have thought about it as well...but after $1400 on the birth, not sure what we will do. Maybe some homemade bread or something...maybe pumpkin butter and some gingerbread. :)

We gave our MW's (and the apprentice) a Willow Tree figurine (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.babybuds.com.au/webfiles/BabybudsAU/webpages/images/10532/26082_72_335_lg.jpg&imgrefurl=http://meadsblog.wordpress.com/&usg=__x-B3gqIIUJqB9AHnTD1hedz8D48=&h=255&w=255&sz=6&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=_fXvyK0cOfOH0M:&tbnh=151&tbnw=152&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpregnancy%2Bwillow%2Btree%26um%3D1%26 hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1B3GGLL_enUS360US394%26bi w%3D1280%26bih%3D584%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=433&vpy=81&dur=1437&hovh=204&hovw=204&tx=133&ty=124&ei=nat1TOGRA-Kg4QbH44zjBQ&oei=nat1TOGRA-Kg4QbH44zjBQ&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0) as a joint gift for their office. That being said, I love the ideas of the handmade gifts.

Well dang, add another project to my list. ;)
Rachael, you are totally right that I should try to keep things simple and utilize stuff I already have in my stash. My DH is always trying to convince me of that too. :giggle:
Shannon, I thought about those figurines, but then I saw a big collection of them in my mw's house. I guess other moms already beat me to it!
I'll go through and take inventory of what I have around here. It sounds like everyone is liking the idea of the grocery bags with some goodies inside. I can do that without too much trouble. :D

I second the idea of the bags of goodies. A lot of my MW's clients give her a tip, but I like the personal touch.
One of the families that I apprenticed for (Amish family) gave us both some raw milk and some beef from their farm. That was really nice!

I made a gift basket for my doula last time around, with essential oils and a massager and a few other tidbits. Things she could either use for herself or for her clients, and she loved it!

Oh! I should do something for my doula. she is still "in training" (doesnt have enough birthd under her belt to be done) and she is only charging me 100.00 I should do something for her!

We're doing something super simple: gift basket with homemade body butter, lip balm and nice dark chocolates.
Our gift budget is rather shot through but I figure with a nice thank you card for both of the midwives we see. That's as good as we can get.
