I have the paragard IUD, and I am really considering removing it and possibly TTC. I have read in the past that some mama's just remove them themselves. Can you tell me your experience with this? Both the good and bad? Are there any risks? Is it easy? If I do it should I still go in to the doctors to make sure nothing is left?

If you can afford it I would have the doctor do it just in case there are any complications- my fertility is too precious to risk for a few extra bucks, IMO.

Ive pulled out 4 LOL i just reached in with my middle and index finger, and when I had the string pulled it out. didn't hurt at all. I ovulated the next day and was PG with DS2 that month

as far as I know it's no different than what the dr does except they pull it out with a tool.

Ive pulled 2 out my self. It isn't hard. Just reached in with my middle and 1st finger and gently pulled until I could get a grip with my thumb and it pops out. Slight cramping but nothing a tylenol and warm bath won't fix. The last one I had was embedded and pulled out at the dr's with the use of tools and U/S. it hurt SO bad. I wanted pain meds after it was out. So I suggest if you tug at it and it hurts to go to the dr. I assume the risk of infection is low since even with my embedded one they didn't give me antibiotics. good luck.

I had my DH do it 18 months ago. I had him grab it with (while gloved as I was bleeding) his index & thumb. He grabbed and pulled slowly. It felt weird coming out but no pain. I found out from the doc how they did it (when I got it) so I knew because it only took me 4 months to get the thing in the first place. I didn't want to wait another 4 to get it removed.

I had mine taken out because it was causing me to bleed for the entire month. It was REALLY great BC as I never DTD due to heavy bleeding.

I didn't mean to pull mine out, but I did. I was using a Diva Cup and I didn't break the seal before trying to pull it out. The suction from the cup was enough to pull it about halfway out. I freaked out and called my husband, who is a physician, and he told me to just pull it out. He didn't even care if I waited for him to come home and do it for me. He did ask if it I could move it easily, and I could. It seems to me that if you are able to move the IUD around without too much resistance then it would be fine to take out on your own. However, if you can't or you feel like you are pulling too hard then I would just see your OB...like one of the earlier posts said, you don't want to risk injuring your cervix or uterus for a few bucks, especially when you are counting on it to keep your (future) precious baby inside!

I pulled mine out. I was so paranoid that it was doing damage since i felt these really weird twinges all the time that were a little painful. Just got hold of the string and gave a little tug. Actually makes you wonder how good it really is if you can take it out that easily. I told the MD that it fell out...she couldn't believe it but did. I think I have had 2 several years apart. IIRC I had the first removed and when it came to the second I was like "hey I can do that"

if you have insurance I think I would go to the dr. while there are successful stories of women taking it out themselves there are risks so I would go to the dr

I didn't pull mine out it came out on it's own during AF. My doctor said I have actual contractions during AF that forced it out.

Go to the health department, they do it for free! But hey, you just might wanna take it out yourself. Also, I had my taken out while I was on my period TMI right? BUT it comes out easier and faster because something is softer inside (the cervix? i can't remember now lol) it only made my period last a few days longer and other than that I didn't notice much difference. I would have your doctor do it if at all possible. Just because others have done it, doesn't mean that yours will come out smoothly or that this is a safe option for you. It literally takes like a few minutes total at the doctor's office and is no big deal.

I pulled mine out. It was super easy, just grab the strings and pull gently. I didn't have any discomfort or cramping during or after. If you meet with resistance, stop and go to the dr. It shouldn't take much force to remove.

Oh, and it cost me $100 to have my first one removed, my insurance didn't cover it. :banghead: So I decided to do it myself the second time.

i don't have any experience with taking mine out, but i've put my fingers up there a couple of times to try and i can't find my strings :banghead: i've never actually checked for the strings, but i haven't gotten pg, so i'm pretty sure it's still in there :giggle:
i think i'm going to have to go to the dr ;) good luck!

Did any of you that pulled it out yourself have a PARAGUARD?? Because that one hurts when it comes out. the copper is coiled around the T and it doesn't feel good coming through the cervix. I was really surprised actually how it smarted. The mirena is all smooth and I'm sure isn't nearly as uncomfortable to remove....I agree- your fertility is priceless...I wouldn't risk a complication. Not for a million bucks. Not if I really wanted another baby.

i tried to pull mine out and i couldnt do it, it wouldnt come out :dunno:. i would have had to pull pretty hard. i pulled harder than i would to take out a tampon and it didnt budge.

I had mine removed by my doc. It was embedded and hurt terribly.

okay, so i just tried again and it slipped out easily with no problem. i didnt even feel it in all honesty, not one bit. i guess i just didnt have a grip on it last time :dunno:...i sat on the toilet, peed (to make sure my bladder was empty so i didnt pee on my hand if i pushed on a muscle or something lol), wiped (of course! lol), then inserted my thumb and pointer (wasnt easy but i finally got it in between my fingers) and pulled it out...i didnt even know it came out until the strings started to come out of my vagina lol

i had mine inserted while i was on my PP period, and i have been bleeding since i got it so maybe thats why it didnt hurt when i took it out, soft cervix bc of the bleeding perhaps?

mine hurt like mad when i had the doc take it out. but i think that's because she put in a stretching tool and stretched the cervix open and THAT's what hurt. not the actual removal.......it was a mirena FTR.

glad it came out easily for you
