Okay, I know we have a diaper sewing thread already here in June, but I didn't want to post my other pictures in that thread since they're not diaper related.
So anyone feel free to share pictures of what they're crafting for their little one. Can be anything, sewing, crocheting, knitting, whatever! I love talking about crafts, so maybe you guys do too!
This isn't finished, but I picked out the fabrics for a block quilt for our little girl.
I'm so excited about pink! I really thought we'd be having a boy.
I bought the umbrella print before we knew what we were having but then once I found out we were having a girl I knew it'd be perfect for her quilt. I tend not to like a lot of the "baby" prints, so this is perfect!
The quilt will be squares of each of the fabrics, there's 3 cotton prints (the umbrella, green zig zag, and a yellow rose print), grey minky dot, dark pink chenille, and then I'm going to do the backing in a solid white minky.
I showed the fabric to my husband and he's like "I just can't envision it.." Ugh, men!
cute! love the fabric, cant wait to see some WIP pics :)

I got it off of Etsy, the print is Riley Blake's Rainy Days. There's a pink and a green version as well :)

So pretty!! Can't wait to see it finished. I'd like to do a quilt for this little guy but I still have to finish my daughter's twin...which I barely have started, lol. I know I'll be crocheting some hats and booties but probably won't need them right away. It'll be fun to see what everyone is doing!

lol! I know how it goes, I'm only doing squares of fabric because I know if I get any more technical than that I will get sick of it and hate making it! I'm an impatient sewer, so I can understand not finishing something!
I'd love to see anything you crochet up, I love baby hats, I have a bit of an addiction starting to them, although I don't know how to crochet or knit, so so far I'm getting them off of Etsy. I wish I knew how to crochet!

So I finally made my first things for our baby girl, I started off easy since I haven't done a lot of baby items before. So I made two hats. The knottie hat was my first and I think I'll have to make a different one, the dimensions are off, I think it's too wide and too short. But I made both patterns myself, so I think they turned out good regardless!
I'm hoping to perhaps get a diaper made up this week, I'm a bit nervous that they won't turn out, but I'm hopeful!

Okay, you all can tell me to shut up if you're sick of seeing my photos! I joke that my crafting is my nesting, I can't stop, I'm having too much fun! :giggle:
Hopefully I'm not the only one crafting, because then I will annoy you all! But I'd still love to see other's photos of baby things they're making.
Here's something I made today. These are actually going to a friend, but I'm going to make the exact same set for our little girl.
I made the elephant applique and then sewed it on, the ear is red minky. Then I made up the matching bear hat. I love anything with ears on it for a baby!
sooo cute. and dont stop :giggle2: post as many pics as you like!!!!

Thanks guys! I just didn't want to be annoying
I'm actually going to put these types of onesies and hats for sale in my Etsy shop since I think they're so cute!
The only thing I wish I knew how to do was knit or crochet so I could make those adorable newborn hats I always see in people's professional photos. Perhaps someday I'll learn, but I don't think I have time now!
Only other thing I've got made up so far is my 4 diapers, the fleece ones which I already put photos in the stash sewing thread.
I need to get squares cut out for the quilt someday too, since the quilt will take me forever to sew. I have no patience so I need to do things in small increments.

I got in a sewing frenzy this week and finished up my baby quilt. I really like it, although while I was making it I was not happy. Never again will I sew minky to satin binding, it was a slippery mess. I was going to do more fancy top stitching, but I was so sick of working on it that it only has straight lines down it in hot pink thread. The back is in white minky.
But I think only I will see the imperfections in it, my husband thinks I'm too critical, which I know I am when it comes to things I make.
I think in all it took me about 5 hours over the course of 3 days.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u225/chibisan713/Blog/IMG_5727.jpg
Then today I made a matching little tag lovie. The quilt is more toddler sized, so I thought it'd be a good idea to have something to tag along.

Um.... I have totally been looking for a quilt on etsy for my nursery... interested in making a custom one? found one that I liked but I emailed the lady about possibly making a custom and she never answered back... I just want one that is different shades of blue with one print fabric with any kind of wild animal. (Zebra/tiger/elephant). How much would you charge?

:giggle: Glad you like it! It was a pain in the neck to make though! I think I'd have to pass on making a custom one though, only because of the work involved, and I don't feel like I've perfected the work.
I know I've seen one lady on here who makes quilts, and I think she said she was doing custom work, let me see if I can find the thread...

the quilt is super cute!! I have nothing to show off at the moment, but wanted to say well done! I quilt too, but have so many baby quilts that I just can't justify another one for the babe on the way- i'm more interested in deciding on a twin for him, if he's anything like my daughter, he won't be in his crib much past a year anyway! or use a blanket in there...
sorry I have no pictures to share, hopefully in a few weeks when the rest of my materials get here i hope to make him an outfit or two!

Thanks! :) I thought lately about making another little minky blanket, just because I love minky, but I know I'm going to end up with a lot of blankets. I already have 2 given to me, some meaningful ones from when I was a baby and I'm sure I'll get more at the shower too... So I'm undecided on that one. Maybe if I get bored later on :giggle:

I finally got something else made up, my diapers were taking up my crafting time.
I wasn't going to make any clothes since they grow so fast but then I found this tutorial and it seemed simple enough, so I made two. The zebra one is slightly bigger, hoping they both fit at some point!
The tutorial in case any one else wants to try it is at Prudent baby http://www.prudentbaby.com/2010/10/sweet-cotton-onesie-tutorial.html

It's a baby sized hooded towel.

I was fiddling with some sweaters I'd already harvested for longies, and I came up with a cute sleepsack that only takes two steps to construct!
You need two sweaters around the same size, or more for a longer sack. Remove the arms from the first (top) sweater, leaving about an inch on either side of the shoulder seam or neckline. Cut the second sweater off just below the armpits. Using a decorative wide stitch, sew the cut edge of the second sweater to the inside top edge of the first sweater's waistband. Repeat for a longer sack.
Add ties, buttons, or snaps to the bottom edge if you like, or leave open. Like a Halo sack, but wool!
And I finished spinning this:

Into this:
http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt222/scaethach/handspun010.jpg
That I think will be some end of summer capris :)
I also got this yarn dyed
http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt222/scaethach/handspun002.jpg
That I can't figure out what to make with but I love how it turned out. Any suggestions?

I missed this, I love the rainbow colors!! I absolutely love how it looks when roving is spun into the chunkier yarn like that (sorry if that is totally not what it's called, I don't know much about yarn!)
I finally got my diaper bag made up. I'm one of those types of people who really likes purses so I didn't want to lug some ugly diaper bag around. And the fact that so many of them are so expensive! So I made my own. I bought this pattern off of Etsy
http://www.etsy.com/listing/73096336/pdf-tutorial-watermelon-wishes-ultimate
I did it a little different though, I made the handles longer, added a magnetic clasp since I have them from making other purses and added the bow around the side.
I like how it turned out! The best part is the stroller straps to snap it to your stroller handles. I like that.
plenty of pockets and even elastic to hold bottles or water for me.
It's an okay size, I don't think it'd work well for cd'ing multiple kids though. Then you'd need to make it bigger, but I think it will work for one.
I know others have talked about finishing some things up for their little ones, so I'd love to see pictures!

I absolutely love that diaper bag!! I might have to pick up the pattern if no one gets me a diaper bag for my shower next week. A couple people asked me what I truly needed, and that was one of three things I had said.
The yarn itself actually isn't chunky, it's a standard weight, but it's only 2 ply instead of commercial 3 (or more plies). I'm leaning towards a romper with it but I STILL can't decide for sure
Keiki
04-29-2011, 05:26 PM
Thanks! The pdf for the bag was pretty easy to follow. So I would definitely recommend it.
And yeah, I figured the yarn probably wasn't "chunky" in the true sense since then you wouldn't be making something for a baby with it. I just mean, I like the way that it looks when you have the yarn twisted so that there's multiple colors on one strand. I still probably am not making any sense :giggle:
Like when people use that type for the waldorf doll hair, I love that!
Scaethach
04-29-2011, 05:40 PM
If you dye it before you spin it, that's how it ends up, they refer to it as "barberpoling" - it's a standard 2 ply. I love that look, that's what got me started spinning

I haven't been on this thread in ages, but I have to say that you all impress me!! I've been busy quilting or making diapers of late, I wish I had the time & resources to do some of these projects though!!
Alison- where did you find info on the hooded towel? I'm wondering if I can make a small AND a large, on for baby one for toddler!
the idea for a sleepsack is brilliant, and I have a wool vest DH was going to trash that I just felted up... I wonder if I can just alter the width of the body on that and turn it into a sleep sac? hmmm.... I'm going to give that some serious thought..
Mindy & Deborah your knitting is amazing... I took a class once to learn to knit, and after 3 weeks of twisting my yarn weird when working on the body of my sweater and having to unravel it all, the lady looked at me and said "Well dear, how about we make a scarf and hat set instead?" .... I was bummed.... and have not gone back since... that, and it aggravated my arthritis so it just wasn't meant to be!

well i started off with something simple and easy (realllly easy lol)
i tie dyed some onesies and burp clothes. (the burp clothes are really cloth diapers that i got at the baby shower that i am not using and did not want to go to waste)
It probably makes no sense but I sew, spin, knit, crochet, and am scared to death of tie-dyeing!!!

I was hoping to have quite a few baby knits but I developed pregnancy-induced carpal tunnel and have only 2 things finished (and it was painful doing those). Well, as scary as this sounds, this is the last thing I wanted to finish before I have my baby.
Assuming everything stays healthy, I'll be doing a water birth at my hospital. Now, I tend to be a very conservative person and wanted something to cover me while in the water. I'm wearing a black sports bra top, but I also wanted something to cover my bottoms for when I get out of the tub etc.
I decided to make my own birthing skirt. I bought the swimwear spandex material at JoAnns and used my 50% off coupon, so this cost about $7.
I'll try to explain how I did it, but it might sound confusing with all the numbers..
All I did was make a 10" wide rectangle that was long enough to wrap around my waist (which ended up being about 32" long) and sewing it together to form a tube (10" wide x 16")
Then I folded that tube in half so that it looks like the top of yoga pants (I hope that makes sense!). Sewed to that are two rectangles of fabric. One wraps all the way around my waist with the raw edges in the front middle and opens in a V in the front. So that one was 32" long x 16" tall. It naturally opens in a V in the front when worn. Then on top of that piece in the front is a square 16" x 16". That is sewn so that the middle is right in the front and the ends meet up with the sides of my waist.
Since spandex doesn't fray, no need to finish the edges either! It sits nicely underneath the belly and can be folded down even more if need be. Nothing to get in the way of monitoring. And the front flaps up for easy access for checking progress as well as for squatting.
I know some things were saying that clothing should be velcro or tied so it's easy to remove in case of an emergency, but for $7 they can just cut it off of me.
Not the best picture, but I tried to show the yoga-style waistband and how the front square is sewn to the sides.

Then, how it opens when squatting

I also posted this in craft show and tell, but I'm just so excited about them because they turned out so great! Those bassinet sheets I mentioned I bought earlier this week....I turned them into an experiment... :goodvibes:
