I feel so bad that I put my asking price for a couple diapers that I was selling, well when theysold and I packed them up, I noticed the addy was Canada, and I would be out money if I shipped them to the mama there, like using my own money that we dont have:( I pmd her stating that I can refund her the money or I need to charge extra, becuase I really dont have the money to pay for the extra shipping charge:( I feel so bad though, if it was you wwyd?
Thanks for any input
LuAnn
Update, I took the package to the po and it was only costing 3 something there:) so the mama did not have to get a refund or pay more. Im so happy because the stupid site was saying anywhere between 10-15 depending on how it was shipped:(

I would have done the same thing I guess. I guess the "right" thing to do would be just send the dipe and learn the lesson though.

I've had to do the same. I think we just assume ppd is ppd to the country we're in. Most of the time the light stuff to Canada isn't a big deal - it's when you're shipping heavier things that it realy adds up :(

I would probably tell her you didn't realize it was to Canada, and you need extra for shipping. It stinks, but it's not fair to you to be out the money. If she chooses to take the refund, neither one of you are out anything, so I think that's fair.

I did this once too, I took it in the teeth and ate the cost, but I told myslef next time I wouldn't do it, I ended up being out the total cost of the items and $7 over out of my own pocket it sucked!

:yeahthat: I am in canada and always check before buying an item about shipping - I would never expect the seller to lose money.

Also wanted to add that, I believe every time I have sold to a Canadian mama, they have offered to pay extra. I would think most are understanding about the shipping thing.

Outside of USA mama's are VERY understanding about shipping, they understand that it costs a little extra and that it takes extra time to get there. I think you did exactly the right thing. If you had priced the dipers ppd with the assumption that it might go somewhere other than the US, you would have charged too much to a US mama. :)

I agree with what's been said. I'm in Canada right now and I always check the shipping info first (unless I'm having it sent to my mom's or MIL's house).
Usually though the different isn't very much in my experience (depending of course on how heavy the thing is), both as a sender (from the US to CAN) and as a receiver (in CAN).
Sorry that happened--that sucks!

iev never shipped anythign over 2 lbs to canada, and that was not even 4.00 so it shouldnt be too much extra, she might want to pay extra, and might want to jsut have a refund, it depends on her but either way, it was sorta a misunderstanding thing, nothing too horrible, imo

I think you did the right thing. Hopefully she'll understand that it costs extra to ship to Canada. One of my first selling experiences on eBay resulted in a HUGE loss for me. I sold a huge lot of newborn baby clothes for cheap, without a reserve (sadly I got pregnant THE NEXT MONTH!!) and hugely under-estimated the shipping costs! :banghead: I ended up losing like $5 off the whole sale! Not to mention I had to buy an entire new 0-3 month wardrobe for baby boy #5... ACK!! Good luck!

I've noticed it is pretty cheap to ship from the US to Canada. I am Canadian so always check the shipping prices too. I understand a bit more to here. In any case, it is always WAY cheaper than going the other direction. For me to ship 1-2 diapers it would be $10 within Canada and $12 to the US. I never make money selling diapers.
LuAnn, you can check the USPS website for calculating shipping. I think the flat rate shipping is around $4, so pretty cheap.

I am in Canada, and even when I buy something ppd, I always EXPECT to pay a little more for the shipping. I am never put out because most of the mamas on here are in the US and are expecting to ship to the US when they list as ppd, and I know that when I'm buying from them. I also ask how much including shipping to Canada...and then the selling mama doesn't feel the way you do right now. Maybe you could offer to pay half of the shipping? :2cents:

Hey,
I'm Canadian so have looked into the shipping thing a lot. :) USPS airmail is the cheapest way to ship; it takes about the same amount of time as global priority and costs half the price. Often if it's only a dipe or two, it'll cost $1.85... I had 9 FB's (not incl. inserts) sent to me for $3.85. If it's light, it costs the same as in the US. The trick is the weight... I'd never have prefolds shipped here, for example. The best thing to do is stick your dipes in a zip-lock bag, squish it down and then stuff it into an envelope.
I think most Canuck mamas understand about the shipping. I'm always willing to pay extra if it costs extra; I just hate paying a whole lot extra when it doesn't, by default, like on eBay. :banghead: I'd feel badly though if a mama sent something and didn't tell me it cost more; I wouldn't want that mama to lose money.

Airmail letter post is the cheapest way to ship to Canada - you can send up to 4lbs this way.

If it is only a couple of diapers, I wouldnt charge extra. Shipping to Canada for a couple of light items is about the same as shipping in the US. Airmail is the cheapest and is comparable to first class in the US. I recently shipped 8 cottonbabies inserts to Canada and it cost less than $3.

Well the thing is I could ship them for 4.05 in the US to Canada, the usps website is showing $15. And we dont have it in out budget right now to pay for that:(

I shipped two diapers and inserts to Canada a few weeks ago. They were 6 oz. and it cost $1.95. I sent it air letter post. This is only a tiny bit more expensive than shipping first class in the US. It should not be $15. The online calculator must be doing somehing weird.
When you take it to the post office, they will help you out. Good luck!

I haven't noticed a big difference in shipping Airmail vs. first class. I never charge more to Canada since it's almost always under $2 (at the PO).

It depends on how you are shipping it, of course, as pp said. I send it regular airmail, it is about 2 dollars for an average diaper. If you are wanting DC and/or insurance though, then it drives the price up bcs you have to send it a certain way to get those extras. You can't get dc/insurance on regular airmail. I think that if you give the mama an option to send additional $ if she wants insurance, other than that you can send it regular airmail for cheap. Makes no sense though to pay more for shipping than she paid for the dipe!! Hope it all works out for ya mama!:goodvibes:

Shipping to Canada hasn't that expensive IME. I haven't had Canada moms offer extra $$ to cover shipping. I usually ask for an extra $1 and it covers any extra.
Maybe the momma will give the extra to cover the shipping. I hope it works out!

I had that happen to me before. I bought a bouncy seat from a great mama on here, and when she got it to the po it wound up being more expensive to ship than she had planned. She emailed me (didnt exactly ask for the extra $) and I went ahead and sent it. (without her asking for it). We are all mamas on here just trying to make things easier in my honest opinion. I couldnt see making her pay more, when it was for MY son. you know what I mean?
Hopefully the mama will just send the extra. Thats what I did..

That's a good idea--usually when I've gone to the PO after checking online, they find a price that's a lot cheaper! It's the secret price list they must have there somewhere... :lostit:

You can't really go by the USPS website for international shipping. Every time I've checked it, it's much more than when I get to the PO. Airmail Letter Post is the least expensive way to go and it's comparable to shipping First Class within the US.

Turned out not to be that expensive when I sent a package there last week. I sent one diaper with a overnight insert and it was just $2.50. I didn't really think that was too bad. I always check in the P.O though as online quotes seem to be high.

I think air letter post is really decent for mailing, but after 18 ounces or so the rates jump up....(don't quote me on the exact weight, but to mail a few ounces, it's only a little more than us shipping..

also, stay away from boxes as they are just addd un-needed weight, i like the menela envelopes from walmart, just put the item into a plastic baggy or ziploc or get some of the polymailers off ebay:thumbsup:

Shipping via paypal to Canada is EXPENSIVE because they don't offer a airmail letter post rate. That's for envelopes (one or two dipes) that are under a pound I believe.
ALWAYS take your diaper or two to the post office to get the rate or simply go to usps.com and "calculate shipping out of the US" on their site. Choose Canada and it'll give you every single option there is for your small ounce packages.

It usually DOESN'T cost any extra to ship to Canada.
In fact it's the CDNs that lose big $$$ shipping to the US.
I usually lose a few $ in shipping (because you can't ship anything for less than about $5) & I have never & would never ask for more $ for shipping costs.
For example I sold a book on Ebay a couple of months ago. I charged a flat rate on shipping (thinking surely it couldn't be more than that) & it ended up costing me more than double the amount to ship it. :( I ended up paying more for shipping that I had received for the book. But it would be unprofessional (& wrong IMO) to ask the buyer to pay more than I had quoted them. I just took it as a lesson learned. :2cents:

I'm in Canada and always ask the mama if she ships to Canada and I let her know that I will pay the difference :-)
As a seller who ships from the U.S. (bordertown) and from Canada, it's actually cheaper for me to ship to Canada from the U.S. than it is within Canada:headscratch: Haven't quite figured that one out yet. I just shipped three diapers (hemp and all) to the other side of the country for $6 U.S., when on my side it would have cost me about $15 (and taken a heck of a long time to get there). I never considered shipping to Canada from the states before (being Canadian and all) but I will always do that now. Our base price for shipping anything (except letters) is about $6 and it goes up from there. I can ship one diaper to Can from the U.S. for about $2 :headscratch: , sometimes less!!!!:headscratch: :headscratch: :headscratch:
Anyway, I had a similar type situation. I shipped one diaper across the country. Mama paid $17 for it, or around that anyway. It was a beautiful VB dipe, worn once (or maybe not at all). Anyway, it was worth about $27 new. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I mailed it from home and it cost me $11. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
I was hoping that she would notice the shipping price and offer to pay some of the difference (like other mamas do) but not a word. Oh well! Lessoned learned! And then some!!!!
Most mamas in Canada realize within canada shipping is outrageous and offer to pay the difference. Same with ordering from the states. Anybody who doesn't offer to pay the difference should have their hand slapped :smiley_haha:
