View Full Version : I am about to lose my mind!

It has been one of those days.....

DS has a lip and tongue tie that have damaged my nipples like no other and went undiagnosed by the peds for six weeks. He was supposed to get it fixed this morning but the specialist needed to change until tomorrow morning, so I have another unanticipated day of extremely painful nursing sessions.

I got my period back thanks to having to supplement because of all of the breastfeeding issues. Yay for cramps again....not!

I asked DH to help me clean the house up and instead he decided to clean the cars and mow the lawn neither of which really needed to be done, and in the process he stirred up a bees nest and got stung a bunch so now he is no good for help with what actually needs to be done.

AND the baby is having an off day and is screaming inconsolably!

I am trying so hard not to lose it, days like this stink :(

*hugs* mama. Days like this are no fun at all. Hang in there. It'll get better!

HUGE HUGS!!! I had one of those days yesterday. I even told my dh that I was on the brink of breaking down. Alli has been (up until today which has been a miracle day)super fussy and needing lots of momma's arms and breast. Yesterday was the worst of them. I think between a growth spurt and being in the peak gas prduction weeks it all just came to a head. I pray for your sake that a miracle day is coming for you too.

Awwww :hugs: DD had a tongue tie and my poor nipples looked like raw hamburger meat. Once they fixed it it was like a miracle though. I hope things start looking up soon.

I smell like an IHOP from all the fenugreek to keep my supply up, and my freestyle pump is my new best friend. I just hope that once the doctor clips his lip and tongue it becomes easy to breastfeed him. Starting Thursday DH goes back to 12 hour days so if it does not improve I will not be able to keep nursing him. It frustrates me that we are six weeks into this and we.are just now getting this taken care of when I noticed the lip tie and that is tongue seemed short and tight at 3 days only to be repeatedly blown off.

So far my LO is gaining weight well, and I'm not feeling the nipple pain that you are (major :hugs: just for that!!) but I don't want to stop BF'ing either! She wants to be held all the time, so I don't have time to pump, definitely don't want to do formula though (we have a history of food allergies with DS, and I think we're going that route again this time...much better to cut it out of my diet and BF than give formula).

From what I've read online, after clipping it's much better. Definitely better to get it taken care of...sooner the better, so they aren't in a bad habit with their tongue. At our 2 week appointment, I asked the pedi about her lip tie, and she said it was fine :banghead: but would give me a referral to an oral surgeon if I "really wanted it". Uh, yeah.

I actually have a dr in mind that's been recommended to me for tie clipping by several people, but our insurance won't approve us to see her for this, because she's not an oral surgeon, she's "just" family medicine.

We are on Tricare and they denied our referral to the specialist because his tongue tie is partial, and his lip tie is considered cosmetic by them. Because he can tolerate formula which he needs to gain weight since he can't effectively nurse, and pumping is not effective enough for me to give him EBM entirely despite having a decent supply (finally), they do not consider his feeding issue to be serious. But they did advise me to make sure.these things are documented since unless they are repaired he could have issues swallowing solids, and issues with speech.

We decided to just pay out of pocket to get these things taken care of now, and thankfully we have the money available to do so.

Same here...Tricare. Sometimes I really appreciate them...and sometimes I don't! ;)

Major hugs to you mama! My dd was born mildly tongue tied and we didn't know until her 2 mo appt. I had an incredibly hard time the first 8 weeks. In fact, I had my husband squeezey foot while I fed dd. And sometimes I had to cry, or scream in a pillow. I'm not sure how severely your lo is tongue tied but it got to the point for me where I thought I was going to die if I fed her one more time. And then after 8 weeks, it got way, way better. Like didn't hurt at all. So I just want to encourage you that it gets better, and if you just keep taking it one day at a time, you can get through this, and pretty soon breastfeeding will be a convenience you will be so thankful you stuck it out! Just a little longer mama :-)

Sorry your having a rough day mama!
I'm on my phone and nursing so I can't write a novel and haven't read all the posts...but have you tried a nipple shield till it can be fixed? Also our Ped, who's a naturopath, said that they don't typically repair tongue ties till much later b/c babies can out grow them.

Hopefully tomorrow is better for you :)

Major :hugs: to you mama! Right around 6w was when my son's high palate was finally diagnosed, before that we (the LCs and I) had no idea why my nipples were a horror show. I had to wait until his palate came down, round 4 months, before I had 100% relief, but my LCs offered some latching techniques that helped a bit - are there any latching techniques that work for tongue/lip ties? Kudos for sticking to it, continuing to nurse DS through that nipple trauma was the absolute worst pain of my life, you have all my respect and I hope it gets better soon! Hope tomorrow is a better day. :hugs:

We are getting ready to see the doctor in 30 minutes and I am sitting in the parking lot crying and praying that he can do something to help my son and I be able to continue breastfeeding. Here we go....

Well it is done!!! He had a class IV upper lip tie and a submucosal 70% posterior lip tie. Dr. Kotlow lived up to his reputation and was amazing to work with. The procedure only took 10 minutes. I nursed him right after and I can not believe the difference! He also diagnosed that Finnlee has a high palette so we still.have some work to do to get to 100% pain free, but I am feeling a lot more like we can do this!

Glad to hear that it went well! How do they do it exactly? I ask because I have a tongue tie and find it hard to say certain sounds.

I'm so glad it went well and things are better already!!

Somehow (a miracle I think, and I'm cautiously optimistic...) Tricare actually did approve the dr I wanted, so now I just need to make the appt and hopefully we'll have a good update like yours soon!

Also, the LC I saw said my DD has a high palate also. (Which goes along with tongue tie.)

They said his palette would get better once he starts nursing now that he can nurse correctly. He is super cranky today but hopefully all of his comfort nursing will boost my supply and we can quit supplementing.

They used a laser to burn out all of the extra tissue. It already looks much better.

Ohhh, you went the laser route, huh? Interesting!
Did they give you exercises to do with his lip/tongue to keep it from growing back/reattaching?

Still working on insurance/referral stuff to get an appt, but I think the dr we'll be going to just does the actual clip.

His tongue tie was behind the mucosal layer so laser was the only option. 4-6 times a day we have to apply pressure to reopen the surgical spots, which is traumatic for everyone involved. Luckily he seems to know how to use his tongue already so hopefully no suck training will be necessary.
