So my OB is on maternity leave intil mid October. I'm not crazy about the other guy at the practice, and the hosapital I had DS at was horrible. Didn't believe I was in labor, the nurse told me I had no pain threshold, DS was born 20 minutes later. So won't be going back to that OB since he only delivers there.
So I drove by a birthing center recently and decided to look them up. I know nothing about it besides what I've read here on DS but just wondering if anyone had any experiences, what you liked/didn't like about the asmosphere? It looks like insurance would cover it?
With DS they wanted me to lay still to try and find the ctx but I couldn't lay still, hence they decided I wasn't in hard labor until I begged them to check me because I felt the urge to push. So I'm thinking a birthing center might be better for me. Plus there was no BFing support. They basically just gave me a pump and told me to pump every hour until my milk came.

It depends on the policy whether insurance will cover, but generally speaking most do. We had our DS at a birth center and absolutely LOVED it. We had a waterbirth in the gigantic triangle shaped tub, but the room was equiped with all sorts of ways to give birth. Following the birth, we rested in the bed while we bonded with the lo, and after a couple hours after the midwives did all their immediate postpartum care, we went home. Our birthing center is run by 3 (now 2) midwives but other OBs have priveliges there.

I'll be birthing at a birthing center also. We had a hospital birth for the first one, but really it was a lot like yours- labored at home for a few hours, went to the hospital, baby born 15 minutes later, much to the surprise of the nurses. OB was pretty good and didn't do much- he even let me catch her (mainly because I wouldn't move my hands, haha).

I didn't care for the 15 minutes I was there before the birth, or the 24 hours afterwards in the hospital. The type of care just isn't personalized, and it's very medical. In general, birth centers are the opposite- the atmosphere is more like your home, and you don't stay too long afterwards. No nurses coming in to take your temperature and blood pressure every few hours like you're a sick person or a disaster waiting to happen. Our birth center is partially paid for by insurance and may be almost fully covered if they get certified in the next few months. There are only 5-6 births a month at the most, so care is very personalized. This might be different depending on the birth center, though. Some are very large and have several midwives who are on call. Even in this case I'd prefer a birth center, but even then you might get someone you didn't know as well, or click with as nicely.

DD crashing..

My birthing center birth was incredible. I labored at home for the majority of the labor. I left when I started screaming during contrax. I labored at home and at the center, in the tub. I had my own cd mix, David gray was on there alot :) we burned oil, and candles were lit. No bright lights, except for the camera flash. It was incredible. My insurance covered it, completely.

I would definitely consider a birth center if a homebirth is not an option. I think it's the second best thing to being at home. My only concern with birth centers is they are usually right next to a hospital and ready to transfer you at any moment. It kind of feels like they are waiting for something to go wrong, or not as confident in the woman's natural abilities as a midwife attending a hb. But when compared to hospital birth, it's a whole different world. They will encourage you to move around, and to breast feed. You might like it!

I think that probably depends on the birth center. Ours is a free standing birth center not affiliated with the hospital's "birth center" but is located just down the street. It is run by midwives and they have no intention of transferring unless it is absolutely necessary for the safety of the child or the mother (in our state there are also regulations of what situations require a transfer built into their "scope of license")

Sounds great! I had a long labor with my first, and I just worry about getting transfered for something lame, like "failure to progress".
I really like birth centers over all, and the rooms are usually very home-like.

DDC yds was a birth center and it was AMAZING. The whole care during pregnancy was so great and i never felt rushed and they answered all my questions concern. She told me once there was never a stupid/dumb question and that made me feel good :giggle:. Labor was great i came in a 4 and walked around outside sat on the yoga ball ect. She left dh and i alone and it was very quite and relaxing. She came in to check on us and the baby as she needed. I got inthe water at a 6 and completed in 20 min then pushed him out! She was great with him i nursed as soon as he came out and she let the cord finish pulsating. We went home after an hour after he was born  All around it was just a amazing the whole care. This time i am using a diff mw also AMAZING and doing a hb. My experience with a center was so great i want to trust my body and do it at home.
