We live across the street from an orchard and yesterday I got 1/2 bushel for $10 (green apples but can't remember their name). I could have gotten a 1/2 bushel of seconds for $5, but since I'm using them mostly for snacks at school I paid the extra for the nicer ones. I wish I had space to store homemade applesauce, because I'd be all over those seconds for that!

The best price I have found (U-pick) is $14/bushel here. One of our local stands has them $18/bushel already picked.

It doesn't sound like your prices are too far off, but you may be able to do better if you look around some (try http://pickyourown.org/ to find places near you).

When I asked at a place that sells by the pound, I was told that there is between 20 and 22 pounds per bushel.

I think it just depends.. Out of season, a bushel here would cost me $32.. roughly.. but right now.. about $10-20 just depending on what place I went to go get it and if there was an apple festival along with it. When I go to apple festivals, they are tons cheaper.

Ok-I just counted how many apples came in my 1/2 bushel :giggle: They need the basket back so I had to transfered them into bags. I got 40 apples in 1/2 bushel, and at $10 that works out to .25 per apple.

I've been seeing them here from the farmer for about $10 a bushell so $20 seems quite high to me. But if you aren't in a place that apples grow well that would make a difference.

We have an Amish store nearby that sells apples for $9/bushel, which I think is absurdly cheap.

That's a half bushel. A bushel of apples normally weighs about 42-48 lbs. Found on pickyourown site (http://www.pickyourown.org/info.htm)

Here's what I remember for the breakdown from when I was taught this in school (quite a while ago so correct me if I'm wrong).

A peck = Roughly 2 gallons of volume. For apples this is about 10-14 lbs A peck is a 1/4 of a bushel.
A half bushel or 2 pecks = Roughly 4 gallons of volume. For apples this is about 20 -22 lbs
A bushel = Roughly 8 gallons in volume. For apples this is roughly 42-48 lbs.

That said it really depends on the type of apple you are buying. Some trade named apples are pretty pricey. I get most my apples free (gotta love my parents for having 8 apple trees in their yard). Most apples around here are $16-22/bushel.

Yesterday I picked up 1/2 bushel of 2nds at the orchard for $8. I don't know what the regulars are. I can find enough good ones to eat in the 2nds bins, but mostly it's for sauce.

The applesauce is cooking and I think by tonight I'll have 3+ gallons canned! And I'm not done.

$14/bushel at the orchard we go to. The better deal (to me at least) is the squash. $1/each. We've picked up tons of acorn and butternut squashes already. :)

Oops! Good to know. The woman I was talking to was very confusing going between bushels and half bushels.

$11.99 a bushel at the local farm stand 1 mile down the road. or 49cents/lb I haven't been to an orchard this year to compare pick your own prices.
