Hey mamas, I need some advice. My 10.5mth old ds wants me to hold him alot more than I can, and I am thinking about getting a carrier to put him in to make life easier. He is about 25lbs, and I have a bad back from a car accident, which lately has been hurting me worse than ever before. I dont want to mess my back up anymore than it already is, but I am tired of him following me around screaming and crying because he wants to be held. I cant get much done because either I end up sitting with him on the floor, or I pick him up but need both arms to support him properly. So, any carrier that fits the bill??? TIA!

Most of the good carriers out there would probably work for you. It really depends what you're looking for though. I know I've heard great things about wraps for bad backs but there is a learning curve with wraps and they're not the easiest thing to use. I know my Beco seems to put most of the weight on my hips so a structured carrier could work (Beco, Ergo, Patapum). Maybe someone else has some better suggestions. The problem is you have to try them to see if they work, like if the Beco doesn't work the Ergo may. Do you have a local NINO group? You could go to a meeting and they would help you out.

Wraps are devine to evenly distribute the weight. There is a learning curve, but sooo worth it. Check out thebabywearer.com for more information on bad backs & babywearing.

Carrying my ds in a Beco is the best thing here:) I cannot carry him without one for long, he is so heavy and wiggly, but in the carrier, he just hangs out and i can do anything!!!
It has been a lifesaver!!!!

I have been loving my ERGO since the day I got it! It rests on my hips, I can put the baby on my back then I have two hands!
Did you know that you can rent an ERGO to see if you like it. ERGO is cheaper than the Beco for what I could find.

I got my ERGO there, I know they are really helpful!

I have a Gypsy Mama, and I love it, I can carry my 2 yr old on my back she weighs 27lbs with no problems. I was also in a car accident and almost all other types hurt my back shoulders etc!! I LOVE my gypsy mama!!! It is kind of a pain when you first start using it, I had to take a baby wearing class 2 times!!! But so worth it. I like them so much that I started carrying them in my maternity store! Good luck, babywearer.com has great info!!

I have a bad back as well and I absolutely love my Ergo...I never get any back pain from it. I had a bunch of other carriers before I discovered the Ergo and I've sold most of them because I find myself only reaching for our Ergo.

I bought an Ergo and boy do I LOVE it!!!
I have tried so many diffrent kinds of carriers and this by far is the easiest for me.
Even with my dd who is 9 months and 18lbs I canrry her in the front and can have my hands free at all times, which is geat because I have a 2.5 year old as well.

Where in your back do you have problems? I love my Ergo, but it rides lower and for long wear can sometimes be wearying to the thoracic region (mid back). You can get a back carry in a mei tai higher up the back, also allowing the child's face to be over your shoulder. I will ditto the comments about wraps distributing the weight more evenly. I found a Moby recently in a consignment store and, once I got the hang of it, was kicking myself for being so scared of them...what a lifesaver it would have been those first few months!

I'd suggest using a carrier that goes over both shoulders to distribute the weight. You may also want to try some good stomach strengthening exercises and that will help your back as well. And try to put some of babys weight on your hip as well as your shoulders.
I think mei tais are easier to learn than a wrap, but wraps are super cheap to make yourself. Good luck!
