I am looking for a very effective DEET FREE insect repellant. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Celeste has pretty harsh reactions to mosquito bites. THe summer before last, she got bit on the cheek and her whole face swelled up. She couldnt open her eye and her lips were swollen shut. Any time she gets a bit on her leg or arm it swells up to about the size of a grapefruit and gets rock hard.

She starts summer school today, and I want to send them with something they can use on her daily to help keep the bugs at bay, but I am not comfortable using Deet on her. Does anyone have any effective alternatives?

I have seen california baby and northern essences both have bug away type stuff, but havent tried any. I need to order pretty soon too!

TIA

i just got some from Frost Fish Cove Soaps (http://hyenacart.com/FrostFishCoveSoaps/) (toryandrew) and while I really had to cover all exposed skin with it (i got the spray & spritzed some on & spread it to cover) it's seemed to work pretty well for me. i haven't had it too long, but we have bad mosquitos and they always find me and i'm pretty sensitive to them.

i know that mamajo is also in the process of developing one too, but i don't think she's testing it yet.

I just bought some from Babies R Us actually - it's called Natrapel. I got a decent sized bottle for 6.99. It smells really good too. Havent used it yet though.

Cutter Advanced uses picardin instead of DEET and is just as effective.

I started using it one or two summers ago.

I know this is an old topic, but I make my own insect repellant because living in southern Georgia we are overrun with mosquitos and gnats.
I used Grapeseed oil for the base and added citronella, cedarwood, eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon grass oils. It works great for us and the mosquitos used to love me.
You can always search online for recipes too, just cheaper than buying it in my case and I always love to make my own so I know exactly what's going into it.

I use my avon for the bugs. My daughter is 2.5 and I have sensitive skin and it does not bother us. It is deet free.

:yeahthat: I agree with pp. I use avon insect stuff and it is awesome. My ds is the same way with mosquitos and we have never had any problem with mosquitos once I got it.

We use Avon Skin So Soft products and they work great for us. I have also used Bounce dryer sheets (just rub them over exposed skin) and they worked really well too!
