i'm in need of a gate for the doorway to the kitchen and at the top of the stairs. i know for the top of the stairs i should have a gate that is wall mounted. well i'm not opposed to using a wall mounted gate for the kitchen either. here's my questions: 1. which gate do you like and why? 2. some gates that i have been looking at have a bar across the bottom to stabalize it when it's pressure mounted. if you have a gate with this have you ever tripped over it? or does it just become second nature to step of it? thanks for your input.

The gate at the top of our stairs, we got at Lowes. It's really great... very sturdy. It needs to be installed, or should be anyways, into a stud or use very strong anchors. I love ours. It's wooden, pine colored. I didin't see it on their website just now, but I just saw it this week in our store. Lowes has a pretty good and cheap child safety section. We just bought a "kit" with 4 door knob locks, 20 or so cabinet locks and 40 outlet covers for $5.99.
I have had the wooden one, from Target, with the bar across the bottom. It was $69 or something? We bought 2 of them for our dogs. They both fell apart within a year, I'm talking plastic chips and screws falling out. I tripped over the bar all the time. HATED IT. Not worth the $. We threw it out, I wouldn't use it for my DS.

The ones I use wouldn't work for stairs but I have a 4 & 7 year old that go over the gates and when younger they didn't have the hand strength to work the swing gates, and also even if they did the baby would get out with them!:banghead:
I finally found these that are pressure mounted and they are plenty sturdy for my toddler to stand and hang on and for my older boys to go over.

we have the cheap wooden pressure mounted gates like this

they worked fine when DD was little but now that she's 2 she can reach over them and lift the bar to release the gate. they don't work well for her anymore... if i raise the gate up so she can't reach over she can squeeze under them. she started learning how to do that several months ago so we didn't get a whole lot of use out of them.
if i had to do over i would go with something like this

we had it in a daycare i used to work at and it was pretty easy to step over, very sturdy for the kids to hang on a push and pull on and was pretty easy for me to open when needed. it is installed to the wall.

For doorways we just have the cheapo pressure mounted ones. For the top of the stairs we have one that is mounted in the wall stud. I like it because it is wood and only has the up and down slats (vertical), which means the toddler can't get a toe hold and climb it. Its been up for over a year and still holding up. I think its by evenflo, it cost less than $50 pretty sure.
