I AM A HORRIBLE MOM!!!! DS had a ballgame today, and it is hotter than heck (90 and HUMID), so I put 4 mnth old dd in a halter dress and hat. Btw myself and MIL I thought we had her in the shade the whole time. I still can not think of when she wasn't, but it doesn't matter, cause now that we are home, her shoulders and upper arms are red  I don't know what to do for my poor baby :( I'm so sad I want to cry!! Is there anything that will help it (preferably disappear!! :) ) MIL says vinegar helps the sting? I need an aloe plant, but no one I know has one.

I thought she was too little for sunscreen, but some people say 3 mnths and older?? What kind for a 4 mnth old (6 yr old ds uses aveeno--and yes, HE was protected today:cry: )

I guess docs say now that you can use a sunscreen such s aveeno for younger babies as well. Just make sure she is getting plenty of fluids (nursing) and yes, aloe vera gel will help. As long as her skin is not blistering she should be fine.Call your dr with any concerns. Sunburn can happen even in the shade!!

Poor kiddo!! I've used sunscreen on my babies, before. One thing I got last summer was a solarveil sling - then I would drape it over Amelia's stroller to keep her protected from the sun (without sunscreen (or kept her in the sling with a hat on). It worked last year, this year she is such a wiggleworm, that sunscreen is necessary!!

WalMart also has a knock off of the green stuff by Banana Boat. It makes it stop hurting. Solarcaine is a spray that works the same. A cold wet wash cloth feels good too. You are not a bad Momma! You were out spending time with your kids and one got sunburned. I am so sure you are not the first (I was). Plain old zinc oxide (that white paste for diaper rash) is the best sun block but not so attractive and since it is cheap and recommended for their bottoms anyway, It should not hurt. I have used it on my nose before. Good luck!

i saw some powder sunscreen in a magazine that use can even use on newborns it said. i think it's about like mineral make-up w/o the color. i can't think of the name of it though.

The sun reflects off of other surfaces so it is quite easy to get burned in the shade.

mommy milk is good for sunburn too. I don't know if you are nursing though.

The reason they say not to put sunscreen on babies is because they often put their hands and body parts in their mouths. Also they absorb chemcials more easy than we do. But the risk of sunburn is worse than putting sunscreen on a baby. When you have to be outside with your baby, it is best to put a non-chemical sunscreen that contains zinc oxide. I personally like california baby best. Also a full coverage shirt is alot better at protecting than a tank top. It is cooler to wear a tank, but you are better protected with a lightweight long sleeve shirt. I am in arizona and our uv index is 11+ everday, all day. I wear a long sleeve shirt and hat and am alot cooler that way. Definitely try some aloe gel for your baby and a nice cool bath.

Oh I am sorry! Yes, babies can burn in the shade. Vinegar will remove the sting and pain of the burn, aloe is really good for the skin, either a gel or if you can locate a plant, that would be best. Use vinegar several times a day to make her feel better, as well as apply aloe or atleast other lotion so the skin doesn't dry out-it will get itchy big time!

I use california babies now.

We have a ray shade that we got at babiesrus. I know there isn't much you can do after the fact other than aloe but for the future it would be good. It just velcros to the top of a stroller and has uv protection of i think 50.
It stays in the back of the car as a just incase item. We got lucky that dd has the type of skin that does a heat flush first(which looks like a burn) and then later starts to get sun burned.
One time we went to the beach and i had put lots of sunscreen on dd before we left the house and after walking her around a while in the stroller at the beach i realized she was getting pink. I couldn't figure out why she was getting a sunburn and immediately remembered the ray shade thing in the car. It saved the day and put my mind to ease.

Vinegar and water helps as well, at least it helps take the sting out. For myself and not the baby, I'll put it in the fridge and let it get cold and it feels good on a bad burn.

no sunscreen until at least 6 months. we use california babu and another kind that i can't remember. starts with an a...makes lots of natural makeup and stuff too.

I don't know what kind of shade you're using, but a lot of umbrellas will not protect against sunburn. Get one that is UV rated and put her stroller under that at ballgames and outtings. :) If she was under a tree I would have also thought that would have been plenty of protection. I've done that with dd with no problems.

Last year when we took dd to the beach the only time she was not in the shade was walking to and from the condo, and 2 maybe 5 minute trips to the waterfront. she got a red nose and cheeks! but it went away really fast, like by the next morning. she's pretty dark complected though.

We bought two solarveil products: a toddler jacket and an elasticized stroller or crib cover. These were /godsends/ last summer (even though dd was only 6 months then, we just let the toddler jacket be big on her). The fabric is like a mesh so the breeze goes right through, but it blocks 95% of both UVA and UVB rays. I highly recommend it, I don't know what we would've done without it last year. :)

I've used banana boat baby on DD since about 2 months. We live in HI, we have to. I know that a lot of health food stores carry an all natural sunscreen that might give you more peace of mind. Arbonne also carries a baby sunscreen that might be good. I would also recommend a solarveil or solarmesh carrier, UV protectant clothing, and a UV hat. I know it seems like overkill, but to me it's worth. To treat the sunburn I would recommend cooling the skin with witch hazel with a few drops of lavender in it and then using some aloe vera. As long as she isn't blistering or seems to be running a fever, I wouldn't worry to much. Just be careful next time!

I never knew that sunscreen was bad and I've used it on both my boys before 6m. They don't seem to have suffered any ill effects.

Good luck mama. You've received great advice.
