i actually can't stand this show, so the only reason i continued watching it was because i heard the narrator say something like, "when a big baby and a petite mom spells breastfeeding trouble..." blah blah blah. i was like, what???

so after the baby is born, a 9 pounder, to a mom who is about 5' tall, the doctor came into her room and informed her that she was "too small" to keep such a big baby happy with exclusive breastfeeding. so the mom says, "ok!" and starts supplementing from the very beginning. then throughout the episode, is constantly giving the baby formula, and saying, "well i really want to breastfeed...."

it's just so asanine to automatically assume that she couldn't produce enough for her daughter. completely stupid. i'm very petite and gave birth to a big baby and i had a MONSTROUS supply. how on earth are those things supposed to be related????:banghead: :banghead:

I've noticed that in most of the episodes of that show...the mom wants to breastfeed but continues to give the baby formula, right from the beginning and then wonders why the baby doesn't want to breastfeed...I don't BF my son (due to severe allergies), so I'm not saying BF is the only way, I'm just saying, duh! No wonder it didn't work...it's a shame.

My kids were both over 8 lbs and I'm just over 5 ft. tall. I had no problems with supply. That is the dumbest excuse for not BF that I've ever heard.:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

The nursery nurse tried to tell me I wasn't making enough colostrum for DD#2 and told me I should supplement (meanwhile I'm leaking colostrum through my gown and bra). I just tried to give DD#2 a bottle of EBM and she smiled at me through the nipple as the EBM rolled out her mouth. She had no clue what to do, but you get her near my boob and she roots around and clamps her little fists around my boob. Bhahahaha take that stupid nurse. pffbbbbt. :moon:

I saw this too, not today but recently..and it frustrated me too! I mean I had a 9lbs. 8 oz. baby and I'm only 5' 4" and I had OVER supply issues for weeks...Breastfeeding doesn't work like a one size fits all, its supply and demand...nurse they baby more frequently woman!! arrg...Ok, rant over.

hebetudinous, and asinine! Sheesh!

I'm 4'10 and had a 8lb 5oz baby and she is EBF and is happily nursing right now! I am able to produce more than enough for her. I hate that they lied to her like that. :banghead:

My cousins OB told her the exact same thing about her Acup gals.

She really wanted to BF but her OB told her that there was no way that an Acup would produce enough milk to BF at all.

I tried and tried to tell her otherwise, but she wouldnt listen. I think that she ended up nursing and supplementing as well !

Man! That show makes me crazy! I'm always shouting at the tv during that show: "No, no don't listen to her! Don't supplement/switch your baby to formula to treat jaundice/do bottles at night!" I'm like a man watching a football game. :giggle:

I suppose this doc has never met a mother of multiples that EBFs either - my very petite cousin had twins 3 months ago and not only did she EBF them for the first month, but because of latch issues from the NICU is now EPing (which for me spells disaster)...she must be starving her children...dumb doctor!

Not trying to hi-jack. I'm also 4'10. You wanna hear the stupid things people with an md by their name say. When I first got pregnant with my ds, I went to my first appointment with an ob. She looked at my chart and said, "Because you are under 5' when would you like to schedule a c-section." Needless to say I said I don't intend on having a c-section. Then she fired me as her patient. BTW I did not have a c-section. I guess it kinda goes along with the dumb things people say.

Wow, that's nuts. I think some docs worry a lot about liability issues and they think they're just "playing it safe"... that may be the case with the nurses who say to supplement. I don't know, though.

I saw that one today as well!
How ridiculous. The last few episodes I watched the women were exclusively breastfeeding so I thought it had gotten better...and then I watched this one.

I also love a birth story....all the "medically necessary emergency c-sections"

It makes me mad what some docs/nurses do in the hospital. You are so vulnerable and impressionable then. With my dd, they convinced me that she was "starving" and of course you don't want your lo to "starve" so for the first two months, I would "supplement" with formula. Of course bfing was horrible the first two months and wouldn't you know it, when I stopped confusing the poor girl and stuck with bfing, it got better.

This time with ds (different state, different hospital) I had an AWESOME lactation consultant. She showed me a chart of an infant's stomach size and assured me that for the first few days, the newborn is living off of what he/she had in utero and then the colostrum is sufficient until your milk comes in. I've been ebfing my ds for 4 months with NO problems.

That show irks me too...I especially hate how they feature low-income moms who are convinced by the medical profession that they need something they can't afford :banghead:

speaking of stupid things that are said there -
I've just heard you can't ebf a boy for very long because they are just hungier than girls "FIOJ HE)(R#)(RU#(R* )#%*$#%#+)%" is what i think about that
and my gma told me just lately that my ds #2 couldn't have gained 2.5 lbs in a month on MILK ALONE - Well of course he did - he was 4 months old - i mean what else was he going to be eating ?????????

I saw this show today too and thought to myself how stupid that comment was. There seems to be a lot of moms with "breastfeeding issues" on this show. I am always surprised by the ones that supplement until their millk comes in because they don't think the baby is getting enough. Kind of defeats the purpose...

I had two great nursers in my first two kids--no problems at all besides painful initial engorgement and some clogged ducts now and again. I actually got myself worked up when I was pregnant with my third because I watched this show! I was so worried that I would have problems because it seems like so many people do (so many people as in those on Bringing Home Baby.) Fortunately, we did fine. It makes it easy to see what its effect would be on first time moms who don't have the support and info they need to be successful.

Wow that sounds familiar. My cousin is under 5ft and they told her the same thing. Sad thing was she went through with it because she didn't know otherwise. There was absolutely no other reason for her to have it. They just said she was short. Told her I wished I had lived closer to her during her pg so she could've had someone to talk to.:banghead:

That's crazy to ask someone if they want a c-section b/c they are short. I'm 4'11 and I'm glad I wasn't asked that question! I also had over supply issues, I can't stand to be engorged! My babies weren't very big, 5lbs 11oz and 6lbs 13oz, but they do grow fast!

It's amazing how so many people just go with what they hear instead of self educating themself. I am sure she had the thought "well he is a doctor he MUST know better then anyone" uhg! it erks me. Most doctors don't even know half of what they are talking about when it comes to BF'ing,I mean they get a small lecture on the 'VERY' basics and that's it! Unless they self educate they always give out wrong information and woman just go with it.:yuck:

I know a woman who is about 4'10-4'11 and had an over 9lb baby and she was very successful at bf'ing.

Ugh this bothers me as well. I think that I have only seen one or two episodes where they come back 8 or so weeks later and the mom is still bfing. They totally should have suggested nursing as much as possible and useing formula as a LAST result and only if the baby was not gaining weight. Ugh this is stupid, its like saying small boobs cannot produce enough, which is totally wrong. Little boobs can have just as much milk as big ones, some people are just supid:yuck: They want women to bf because its good for the baby and for the mom and then they come up with with sillyness.

i hate this show because thats the thing that annoys me... they want to BF but then it seems something stops them.

last episode i watched there was a young couple and the gilr used a cover (i assume cause she was on TV) and said "well it hurts and its gross (she said she meant the leaking)" she claimed she had to stop nursing because the baby would latch but wouldnt suck or some bull--- well honey, take that darn cover off and quit complaining!

grrrrr:dontlikeit: I'm always yelling at the TV screen watching it too. I hate it at the end when they show them in a few weeks and none of them are still bf'ing. The one was all like, "well, he just took to the bottle" Yeah BECAUSE THAT's WHAT YOU WERE FEEDING HIM!!!! ugh.....

My sister and I always joked that it was because formula companies were the sponsors.

I sure hope that isn't true.

My mom is 5' and she ebf all four of her kids...I think I was bf until I was two or something. (I get teased by the others for this)

All four of us have ebf our kiddos (totaling 16 children by this time next year)

Seriously. A DOCTOR said this? A .. a doctor? I want to cry.

This is why I don't listen to doctors. Any idiot can get through college. IMO, I may not be a trained professional but I trust a combination of LOTS of independent research and MATERNAL INSTINCT in making decisions re: my son more than I will ever trust any one doctor.

That's crazy. I know I'm constantly yelling and getting aggravated at thsi show too. Funny that all of them who supplement in the beginning NEVER have enough supply. URGHH...
I also saw the one where the girl said it was GROSS I was like, umm...have you tasted formula? That's erks me too. I knew she wouldn't last long, BUT she did say she was pumping so that was good. :) I also thought that stupid cover was a bit much so early on, she couldn't even get the baby to latch cuz she was so worried about the grossness of it and that cover in the way.

As for self educating, I so wish more ppl would do that. I swear I know more than half the doctors/nurses around here about nursing becuase I'm a huge researcher of the topic. I'm interested PLUS I want to do whats best for my dd. If more parents would self educate I bet we'd have much healthier babies.
