Ok, I was all set to get a few Avent bottles to have ready for pumping after baby arrives. I had heard these were best and what all LCs recommend (although I have heard about the issues with tightening/leaking).
I just went to a breastfeeding class last night and the LC said Avent is the absolute worst! Now I know everyone will have different opinions, but a LC saying that makes me think I should get something else. She recommended Dr Browns, Playtex Ventair, and Playtex Natural Latch.
I know I don't want to get a bunch before I know what baby likes. But I wanted to get a few so I feel prepared. I think I'm going to get the Ameda Purely Yours pump.
Anybody have recommendations for bottles?
Thanks!

All 3 of those that your LC recomended are AWESOME. I have tried other stuff (including avent) and hated them, especially for breastfed babies. Playtex ventair became my fave because it was the easiest to clean and I got tired of the bags!

We use Dr. Brown's when DH feeds DD. We haven't had any problems w/them that you would normally associate w/bottles.

The only bottle DD would ever take was an avent, we tried several others and finally avent and it worked. I would try buying one of several different types so you cansee what works best for you. Anything that doesn't work you can always list for another mama to try. DS took regular old bottles and nipples without any problems. Every baby is different.

my personal favorite are the playex disposables with the latex naturaltch nipples. they just seem to be the closest...
but we have also used ventaire...nice for car rides, easy to mix formula in /powder water, pain to screw off and on, bottom and top, easy to clean.
hated Dr Browns..

We have used Avent w/ both Dd w/out problems. I mean sometimes the leak but it is usually because I didn't get the nipple in the ring right or something that was my fault. I have hear DR Brown are really good, but have never tried them. Like you said every one has different opinions, but I wouldn't be afraid to try the Avent. I have the Avent manual pump and could pump as much w/ it as I did w/ the hospital grade Medula that I borrowed for a little while. You may want an electric pump if you are going to use it much but I am a SAHM, so I only use it occasionally.

We've tried a LOT of different types of bottles with DS, trying to figgure out what he liked once I went back to work. We started out with Gerber bottles because I started with a Gerber manual pump. Those bottles have the big nipples. We got some big Vent-Air bottles too with those same big nipples. DS hates them. He can't get a good latch on them.
We switched to Dr Browns, with the little small nipples, and they work like a dream. I have a Medela pump now, and the little nipples fit in the milk storage bottles, so sometimes he drinks right out of those. Never had a problem with them.
It's really different strokes for different folks though - I know plenty of babies that latch to big nipples better and plenty that latch to little nipples better. Just gotta try out different types with your little one.

We use Avent and just basic discount Evenflo ones. You need a special converter to use Avent with the Ameda (that's the pump I have)
If I could do it all over again, (these bottles are on the 2nd baby) I would buy the GLASS Evenflo ones. They say the glass is healthier and they fit the Ameda pump exactly. Also glass keeps the breastmilk fresher and maintains the nutrients and immunities.
I just could replace all of my bottles, too much money

What are the glass Evenflo bottles called? I was interested in them too but I didn't see them on their website.
DS won't use anything but Avent. I had spent like, $45 on the Playtex Nursers (and really liked them because of the ease of the bag and whatnot) but DS refused. Plus, since we had so many latch problems, our LC suggested that we only use Avent, anyway. The general rule is that the nipple should be wide at the base, and the actual nipple part should be up to the top joint in your pinkie finger for breastfeeding babies. This rules out a lot of bottles out there, but supposedly those are closest to the breast and easiest to latch onto.

I used Playtex, but DD and DS didn't really use bottles much. With DD I used Playtex disposables and silicone naturalatch nipples, and with DS I use Playtex ventaire with silicone naturalatch nipples. Neither one liked latex (I think it must have a funny taste.)

When I was having a hard time finding a good bottle for DD I did see these bottles on www.onestepahead.com that are actually shaped like a breast, the whole bottle is, not just the nipple. I was going to try them if avent didn't work, but thankfully they did.
They are called the breastbottle, kinda cool I thought!

That is the COOLEST looking bottle ever! Wish I had known about those a few months ago! ARG!

Yeah, I'd go with either the breastbottle or the Playtex with NaturaLatch silicone nipples. Those are both super easy to switch back and forth with. I've tried A LOT of bottles. Playtex is my favorite. I was not fond of Avent bottles. The nipples were too stiff and the collars leaked like crazy unless you got it on just right. I also like the Playtex bottles because you can get a kit that includes a pump adapter so you can screw a drop in right onto your pump. It's a super easy system and is great for the occasional bottle.

I used playtex with my first and hated them since they leaked. (Though I am sure they've changed their nipples since I used them)..I was planning on using them with my second child but accidently offered her an avent one (I was using the avent manual pump at the time) and she loved it. Figured after a nightmare trying to get my first to take a bottle, I'm going with what she liked.
This is my fourth child to use the same avent bottles. It's great since the nipples last pretty much as long as you want them to. I do recommend skipping the newborn nipples since they don't come out fast enough and the baby can get annoyed. I bought the next step up which is either 1m or 3m. I usually don't bother replacing until next baby needs them.

DrBrown's are the BEST! I've got so many of my friends hooked on using them! They come in either the big or small nipples. They're more like bf'ing because they don't create a suction like other bottles. (Like when you drink out of a coke bottle and it start to "cave in". ) It also prevented my dd from spitting up and having such bad gas!

We only used Avent. I guess it depends on the baby as some won't use some bottles, KWIM? I used those little Avent storage bottles in the freezer too for a stockpile, I liked those - I never had a leak with one because of the connector. I had many a leak with the regular Avents, though, LOL. I kept all of my Avents and will use them with the girls if we do - save money and all and they were my favorite. I just hated the Playtex ones, although I couldn't tell you why anymore, LOL.

We rarely use bottles, but the ones that work great for us are Mam Ultivent and Premium Playtex Nursers.

Like so many pp said, your baby will probably decide what bottles you use! My first hated the Ventaire, kind of like the Medela/Nuk ones and loved Avent. So we ended up with only Avent for daycare. Second one comes along (and she has a small mouth) and she absolutely refused the Avent. She also refused the Playtex, Gerber classic, the Naturalatch one, plus another one that had a large nipple -they were just too big for her. So, we ended up w/ the Medela and glass Evenflo w/ the Nuk nipples (she hated the "traditional" long skinny nipple shape, but loves that weird angled nipple. She also will only take the Nuk pacifiers (same shape). I'm not sure why the LC would say Avent are the worst when Avent actually has several studies that show they are one of the best for breastfed babies. :) Just get one or two of several varieties and let the baby decide.

I guess I am in th minority here but I spent tonz on the playtex drop in systems and then the ventair ones. To only find out DS LOVES the regular gerber bottles yup thats right gerber, I was shocked but he was happy!

I love my AVENT bottles. Now that DS is a toddler I pump into the bottle or sippy cup and he drinks from them both with a sippy spout. Of course, this requires an AVENT pump.
I would have loved to try one of the other brands you listed. We only have problems with one (out of 14) our bottles leaking though. But I bought it used.

We tried one of these too...what a PITA to fill though and keep the milk warm for an infant! I really wish they had worked for us though!

we use the playtex with bags with the orthodontic nipples. We tried the natural latch nipples but ds wasnt interested. We never had any problem going from breast to bottle either. I like the playtex ones cause they are so convenient as far as *knowing* the bottle is clean when you dont have a sink. Plus you can push the air out of them :goodvibes:

Our little Taci,is a die hard boobaholic. After trying all of the expensive bottles(including the breastbottle)we found out she likes the newborn GERBERS.
Of course it figures,we spend a ton of money on bottles and she likes the ones that cost less the $1

We went through a bunch of bottles/nipples. I had a bunch of avent bottles from my cousin but dd wouldn’t take them. We had bigtime latch issues so my lc wanted me to get her to use them – or at least a bottle with a wide mouth bip.
At first she only used medela bottles/nipples and then switched. I do see a BIG difference in her latch when she uses the medela nipples vs avent. One bottle we tried that is really awesome is the breastflow by first years. It’s a 2part nipple – hard inner and soft outer that is large.
If you’re breastfeeding, do stay with the newborn nipple as long as possible so they don’t get used to the faster flow and reject the breast later. Its not aproblem for everyone of course, but can be for some/many and easier to avoid rather than fix. DD is 9mo and is still using the newborn nips- my breasts don’t change flow rate so neither should her bottles!

We used Playtex Ventair when I went back to work with NO problems. I always used the Stage 1 (newborn) nipple so she would not get a lazy suck:thumbsup:
She no longer takes a bottle, but we are still nursing at 17 months!
