View Full Version : Thoughts for my oldest DS

So I'm asking for thoughts & prayers in advance. This might not be so serious but I am naturally worried. We went in for what was supposed to be a physical & now we are getting sent to cardiac specialists, getting workups, etc. They found a heart murmur in my oldest, Nik.

While I have to stop & say wow, I am glad we got to see this particular gen doc, I was just not expecting anything other than "come back in a year unless he's not feeling well." Instead I got all this other stuff. Geez. I am almost thankful that Tricare has been a pita & I couldn't get in with all the docs I have been trying to get in with. I FINALLY got in with this doc after a reccomentation from a DS mom in my area (TY pfratz btw) & he just so happened to be a gen doc that used to work for a ped cardiac surgeon & as my DH pointed out, had he not worked under a ped cardiac surgeon he might not have been used to listening for these types of heart abnormalities in children - he might have missed the sounds in Nik's heart. I asked the doc "How did the other docs miss this noise all this time?" He explained to us that they might not have been looking for it... which is the same point DH made to me. Maybe a blessing in disguise. A scary one, but one none the less.

The doc explained that it may be nothing to really worry about - the tests may reveal that this may resolve itself or could be an easy fix but due to his age, it's more of a concern & shouldn't be overlooked. Most kids w/a heart murmur that he heard I guess have a hole in their heart at birth & it closes up shortly after. Well his apparently hasn't & it might need to be helped along so it could be a defect. So we will see. The good thing is, he's not like 14, playing a competetive sport & then it shows it's ugly face in the way of a tragedy.

Anyway, I'm worried mom of course! But just keep us in your thoughts please! I'm sure it's nothing & our luck will be just fine ;) But all thoughts & prayers are greatly appreciated. The doc called this morning to explain further after checking with the ped cardiac surgeon he will be sending us to in Syracuse.

TIA for prayers, good wishes, etc. I just hate having to worry about my lil man at all!

:hugs: Try not to worry to much. I was born with a heart murmur and the hole never closed up. It has not had a negative affect on me. I just have to take antibiotics when I go to the dentist and in after labor just as a precaution.

DS#2 (my most active child) has had a heart murmur since he was born - went to a cardiologist who basically said, "Yup, he's got a funny sound but it's obviously not affecting him any, so don't worry about it." This year at his 6 year old check, the ped. recommended that they check it out again, so we just had it checked a couple of weeks ago. Turns out (after an EKG the cardiologist said was "wacky" then doing an ultrasound), it's NOT a hole, like they originally thought, it's just one of the tubes in his heart takes a sharper turn than it's supposed to and makes a funny sound. This time, they said, "No restrictions, no worries. Check back in 2 years."

So, at any rate, :hugs: :hugs: I know it's scary, but if you haven't noticed any other signs of problems or lethargy, I'd bet things are going to be just fine.

We are going through the EXACT same thing w/ my 21 month old DD. She's seen numerous doctors because of how often we've moved around and NONE have ever mentioned a murmur. But at her regular check up at the beginning of October, her doctor (who is not a pediatrician, just a family practice doc) noticed it and gave us a referral to a pediatric cardiologist. Her appointment is next Monday, and I am praying all is ok and it's just one of those things, but my cousin had open heart surgery this past August so it could be something genetic.

Hugs hugs for your family. I'm sorry you are going through the same thing. :hugs:

TY mammas. It makes me feel better that I'm not the only one that's dealt with this & there are so many + sides to this. I of course still worry but I am glad we are being cautious too. TY for all prayers and thoughts!
