Hey Mamas!!

I'm a first time Mom so of course I question every little thing!! I ask my Mom but of course things were WAY different back when she had kids... and a lot of the stuff she just doesn't remember. So I thought I'd ask for the expertise of you great DS Mams... :goodvibes:

I have twins :lostit: that are mostley breastfed (nursed 6-8 times during the day). They each get a bottle before bedtime and again when they wake (which is usually around 4 a.m.), which is a mix of 2 oz. formula and 1.5-2 oz. expressed BM. So, most of their intake is BM.

I've tried several different formulas - mainly because I got a ton of free samples from the hospital. I originally didn't want to do formual at all - but then reality set in after wayyyy too many sleepless nights. It was just way too tough with twins.. for me anyway.

So, their poop has become this blackish greenish mess, which smells soooo bad. For awhile, Eli still had the 'BF poo', the yellowish, mustardy, etc. Sadie has pretty much always had this blackish greenish mess. But now both of them have it. I just thought it was somewhat strage, since they are really only getting a max of 4 oz of formula per day. All other intake is BM!!

Also, lately when they get their first night bottle, they both are spitting up afterwards. Not a lot... but enough to wake them. My Mom keeps telling me that babies spit up and not to worry. I just think its strange because its only when there is formula involved.

Right now we are using Enfamil Lipil. We have used Nestle Good Start (green can) and Similac. Pretty soon, I will be using mostley Similac Advance because that is what WIC here offers.

Anything I should be concerned with?? Or am I just looking to hard to find something wrong??
Thanks so much. :goodvibes: :goodvibes: I love being a Mom!! :loveit:

not a whole lot of good advice but you aren't supposed to just switch formulas cold turkey, they have different ingredients that could interact. I'd talk to your wic ppl for more info they will be able to advise you better

Yes switching formulas so often can be very hard on their little tummies. I would wean them to the similac starting now but don't go cold turkey. The poo sounds like normal FF poo to me.

most babies spit up less when breast fed... formula tends to be harder on their system...

also remember that the first part of breastmilk is to satieate their thirst, then they get the hind milk for their hunger for food.

when bottlefed, they get it all at one time, so their 'thirst' mechanism probably doesn't get the right signal and they may tend to 'overfeed' a bit, which causes them to spit up...

As for poo color I don't think you need to be worried. Bring it up to your doc at the next check up and they can tell you for sure. I know plenty of people who breast feed durring the day and formula feed at night (1 or 2 feedings) and they don't have any issues.

I was told by even the NICU nurses that it isnt an issue switching formulas like that when they are receiving such a small amount. My DD was supplemented 2-4 oz/day for thr first 6 months and we also varied formulas based on what we coupld get samples of & what we had on hand and she's never had issues.

But yes, even a little bit of formula can drastically change their poo.. it always amazed me with my DD too.. her poo was always more FF like than BF despite being mostly BF. Try not to worry mama :hugs:
