I found a neat crock that holds scraps until they can be taken out to the composter (or garden in my case) I ordered one online for my mom for X-mas. She always has her scraps hanging from a bag on the back door handle and they are always stinky and dripping!! EEWWWW!! This container has a charcoal filter in the lid (for absorbing odors) and air holes so the scraps can "breathe" Maybe this has been around for a while but it's new to me and I think it is a really cool idea!! Just had to share!!
Here's the one I got but there are others available...

Thanks for the GREAT link-so neat to see these on the market. I try and use things that would otherwise go in the land fill for my composting like:
Old Dishwasher-gutted, turned on back, few poked holes, it's now a closeable box to compost in.
Old plastic icecream tub w/handle-works great for holding compostable food scraps til they can go out to the *Old Dishwasher.
Happy Composting:thumbsup:

Wow, I am impressed!! I would have never thought of using a old dishwasher! Way to be green mama!! Yeah, we have used a old container for that too but these are big and oh so pretty!!! Plus I figured my mom would like this better for a Xmas gift than me giving her my old cottage cheese container!! LOL!!

WOW! I love the crock. It's pretty and functional. Most all of my food scraps go to my chickens, then we compost the chicken poo in the garden. They love the fruit & Veggie scraps plus breads and grains. I limit meats though no chicken for them. LOL. I keep it in a bowl by the sink but this would work so much better. I'll have to look that up again when we have the extra $.

Wow that's cool! I just use a lidded trash can outside, spray it with Coke and water and roll it around every so often.

Thanks for this info...I am going to get us one for Christmas....we have a container that sits in our sink. I hate it b/c it draws fruit flies & stinks sometimes if i don't take it to the compost pile right away. Esp in the summer mos. Yep definitely going to get one so thanks again mama!

I think I saw that in a HArmony catalog once. It's much more sightly than the one we use. Ours is a glass bowl with a lid we've had kicking around. I learned don't ever use plastic containers for compost... stinks! Glass or ceramic is a good way to go!
I like the old dishwasher idea. I think we now have 4 compost piles going. We put in kitchen scraps plus old bedding from our chicken coop and garden waste (rotting veggies, grass clippings, weeds, etc). All are just contained in chicken wire... nothing cute, but it's functional. The fun part about it is we get the most random stuff growing out of the piles, like pumpkins and watermelon!

so you basically recycle the food scraps twice.

I use an old enameled pot for my scraps. The only time I don't compost is Jan/Feb if we have way too much snow for me to want to crawl through to get to my compost bin. Some winters it's not an issue, some....forgetaboutit.

That sounds like a nice Christmas gift!
I started keeping ours in a bowl in the fridge, it keeps it from rotting or attracting fruit flies until we get it out to the composter. I guess it might be better in the freezer, huh?

I've actually had this one in my Gardeners shopping basket online for the past 3 weeks, as well as the compostable biobags to use as a liner:

I want to do it but the thought of composting (all that rotting food!) creeps me out a little. We have curbside compost pickup once/week.

SO GLAD TO SEE SOOO MANY OF YOU COMPOSTING!! I could do it more, I know. I have a sink disposal (is that what it's called..ugg..brain f_rt) And I use this a lot of the time too.
I think it is so important for people to realize that even when we throw stuff in the garbage that will break down, a lot of it actually doesn't break down because it gets so compressed in landfills that it can't rot (no air, no bugs..etc.) So it just sits there for a rrreeeaaallyyy long time.
Man chicken poo is probably great compost. My mom used rabbit poo as fertilizer last year and her plants looked great, well they usually do anyway. I guess the rabbit poo is supposed to be a mild fertilizer that won't "burn" the plants. We have a rabbit farm near us and they give it away for free. FREE POO...WHO KNEW?? LOL!

I have something similar that my husband gave me for Christmas. I use the bio-bags (the kind that biodegrates - I have potatoes in my bin that last longer than the bags) in it because I tend to forget and it is all messy and gross.
I love it!!
We have a worm bin and three goats as well - so not much goes to waste. I want chickens so bad, but my husband says no more animals until we are done having kids. :)

This is the one thing that I would absolutely do if I recycled nothing else. Food is not meant to be in a landfill. I put scraps in a coffee can with a lid. It cuts my trash in about half.
Also, when I clean out the fridge, I get a 5 gallon windfresh bucket and it gets filled about half way.

Man, chickens would be so cool! My dh just brought some farm fresh eggs home last night that a guy from his work brought in to their shop. They are the neatest looking eggs I have ever seen. They were brown (of course), blue, green, and pinkish. Looked like easter eggs!
In case anyone doesn't know, egg shells are really great for composting too!
