we nurse first then supplement here...and I have a question.
Ok, we thought for the last few weeks that ds had a cow's milk aversion because he would get cranky/colicky whenever I drank milk or ate ice cream.
Ok....so when it old this to the doc, she looked at me like I had 5 heads, because DUH...ds is ON a cow's milk formula :headscratch:
Am I crazy here or what?
I seriously think that when I eat dairy it bugs him, but would that be a different thing than getting formula every day? I'd LOVE to add dairy back into my diet, but I fear the crying that seemed to ensue each evening when I did eat it. Anyone else ever experience this or heard of this? or have I simply lost my mind?

I'm not sure my answer will be too helpful, but with DS #1 I nursed first and then supplemented as well~ he was fine with formula, but when we started him drinking milk, I noticed changes- he seemed to get sick quite often and was crankier~ so we switched back to formula instead of milk for bottles. I'm thinking that the cow's milk in formula is majorly processed/broken down and it digests differently that regular milk~ even milk coming through breastmilk.
I don't think you are crazy! Go with your instinct- if your son is doing better with you not eating dairy, then if it were me, I'd steer clear of dairy. Ughhh, but I know how hard it is- SOOO much has dairy in it.

My son is on cows milk based and he does fine on it except for his constipation right now. I noticed when I was allowed to nurse him he could get fussy when I had dairy. He would get horribly gassy. I totally don't think you are crazy at all, the doctor should have taken you seriously.
I found this short paragraph so obviously it is common. I just think that it would be different, you having dairy compared to the baby having milk based formula...Maybe I not making sense.
Cow's milk in the mother's diet may cause colicky symptoms in some babies. If this is a problem for your baby, she will draw her legs up toward her body and scream with gas pains after feeding. You can eliminate milk from your diet for four to seven days to see if the symptoms disappear. As your baby grows older, reintroduce milk into your diet because babies often outgrow this reaction to milk. If you eliminate dairy products from your diet, you need to talk with your doctor about a calcium supplement.
Maybe just stay away from diary for a bit and see if it works. If so than you figure it out on your own.

your right, EVERYTHING I practically love has dairy in it :banghead:
Although I have noticed i can on occassion eat cheese, and if I eat the dairy closer to bed time, it's not as bad (because he sleeps right through it...)
Thanks for the reassurance :) I think your right, it is majorly processed, so that would make sense that it doesn't bother him the way breast milk does.

yeah we were in the midst of the trial and error week 4 weeks ago with medicines (we thought he might have reflux) and what not and the one day we didn't give him the meds ( we forgot because another kid got sick :giggle: nad we both have ADD  until 1pm...) he was fine! :headscratch: Then we got to thinking about what was different that day, and I realized I had not had cereal for breakfast that day.
We got another test run the day of thanksgiving because I had seriously 2 bites of this creamy spinach dip (made with heavy cream) and he SCREAMED so bad for an hour that afternoon. it was awful....that was why I kind of knew it had to be that.
Thats good to know he may grow out of it though :) I'll probably wait until he is close to taking solids around 6 months or so then try easing it back into my diet. Thanks for the info :goodvibes:

There is a BIG difference between cow's milk formula and cow's milk itself. The formula is broken down so much because cow's milk itself is pretty difficult for infants (and some toddlers) to digest. You're not crazy. Your doctor should get her head examined and realize you could possibly be right.

We nurse and supplement. My son was having HORRIBLE gas issues, screaming fits... and he does have reflux, so he's on meds. Anyway, I've cut dairy out of my system but I had to switch his supplements to soy also.
To answer your question - he could be okay with a cows milk formula and not with YOU having dairy.

We nurse and supplement too. I don't really have anything to add but it's good to know that there's other ppl out there doing it too!

Obviously the cow's milk in formula is different than real milk...if it was the same we'd be able to feed our babies' regualar milk - Docs need to pay attention to parents more. It sounds like a dairy problem to me too.

We have the exact same situation, I'm off dairy now and it's all better. You are completely sane :)
