I am not sure if you are nursing or not, but I did/am so here's what we did...
We started DD#1 on cereal @ 5 1/2 mos & DD #2 never got cereal as we went right to mashed / steamed table foods @ about 10 - 11 mos old. We have different doctors now than when Dd#1 was a baby, & they highly recommend no liquid but the breast from the breast (including pureed baby foods, baby cereal, water, etc.) until a LO is at least 15 mos old because it it supposed to greatly increase weaning. They recommend going straight to mashed / steamed foods, & no baby foods, etc. We did use some baby food when we went out (maybe 1 x per week or less) because we didn't always have access to food from home, or a way to warm it if we brought it from home. But we never used cereal W#2.
When our docs had told me about no liquids, etc. I had already given DD#2 small sips of water during church, in the van, etc. to stop her from screaming / crying when she was not interested in nursing (or just mad @ the world because she was strapped into her car seat :banghead:) so I didn't take it away from her, and never had issues w/nursing either. DD#1 never had any issues nursing either & had water in a sippy @ 5 1/2 mos. Both girls drink water like camels & have never had any nursing issues.
I know the most important things they say to consider are to make sure your LO can sit up & doesn't push the food out of their mouth before starting solids. We offered DD#2 solids (baked potato) @ 6 mos old & she was NOT interested. Hmm, I wonder if that is why she HATES all potatoes (baked, fries, mashed, etc.) :headscratch:?? Poor kid, I ruined her for life!! :giggle2:

I just started Abram on solids and he HATES cereal. He's been EBF since birth so he was a bit shocked when he tasted the cereal. He can eat fruit and veggies but he will not eat cereal. He gags everytime. Anyway, back to your original question. We just started him and he's 7 months.
ETA: His doctor wanted me to start at 4 months. I didn't but that what the doc said.

We started Mia when she was 4 months and when we did, it was very obvious that she was ready (she would actually lunge at the spoon, ate a small bowl of cereal her first time and never gagged on food). This time, I just sitting back and waiting for the sign, but I really don't want to start until around 6 months. All I really remember was how much of a PITA baby foods was and was happy when she was on table foods, eating what we were eating :giggle:

We never really gave DS cereal. Sometimes we mixed it into other stuff, but only after his iron was on the low end of normal at his 9 month appt. He always just ate regular (soft or cooked but not pureed) food.

We started cereal mixed wtih applesauce with ds at about 5 1/2 months. I started dd just shy of 6 months and it did affect our bfing so I wanted to delay solids with ds. However, he was lunging at our food at the table so he wanted to try something....and thankfully it hasn't effected our bfing relationship. He still bfs on demand during the day and occasionally wakes up at night to feed (more like early morning between 4-6).

my guy started a few weeks ago (he's 7m+ now) and I just mixed the cereal with expressed bm or formula if I can't get any bm out or if was just bf. he only has this once a day but really enjoys it! Before this, he was lunging at food, watching it go up to our mouths etc and he is a super-eager eater now. I also started introducing other foods slowly (he loves s. potatoes, banana, avacado, applesauce, pears and hates peas)- but he still only eats solids after his midmorning feeding/ or lunchtime feeding.

I was dumb and we tried cereal at 4mos... of course she wouldn't have it and we just tried the one time  anywhoo come 6mosish she was really interested in what we were eating so we tried cereal again and she snarfed it up. We started introducing other stuff a couple weeks later. Some days she wants nothing to do with the bottle and just wants cereal, other days she doesn't do much solid and just wants a bottle. Whatever works, we flex to whatever she is needing.

My daughter had cereal at 7 months maybe once. I decided it wasn't necessary and a month or so later went straight to table foods. With our newest guy we will skip it all together.
