Hi. I'm in west Richardson, going to try cloth diapering my 3rd child after a very positive experience with the Imse Vimse training pants for #1 (and currently with #2). I'm lucky to be near Bree's Bums, one of the few cloth diaper stores in DFW, but I'm also looking to buy used from others in the area or take suggestions of other places to shop. I would be interested in a meetup too. -Cheryl

Since today is going to be so warm (and we need more almond milk) the kids & I were going to head up to the Central Market in Southlake and play for the afternoon. We will probably be there at least by 12 and most likely stay most of the aftenoon. If anyone is available we would love to see anyone in the area!

Daniel is allergic to milk, soy, squash, peas, broccolli (now:cry: ); and anything that has added asorbic acid in it. Oh and apples so far. He goes to a GI doctor and we just scheduled for a EGD/SIG and then a PSC(?) and they will also check for celiac disease.

Daniel is allergic to bananas if we include the seeds; so we just cut the outside portions for him and give the seedy part to my dh.

Dr. Barth at Children's in Dallas. I LOVE HIM; he actually listens to you and talks to you instead of AT you. He doesn't like doing procedures on babies if he can help it; but Daniel is starting to have reactions to foods that he used to not; and is also refusing his formula. We had originally gone to a GI doc at Cooks, but he just wasn't personal and actual put Daniel on a reflux med that had milk in it!

Yeha we were going to Dr. Ogomala (sp?) and were only seeing the NP, and after 3 months of no change, we left and now see Dr. Russo at Childrens. What a huge diffrence!

What reactions does your son have? Maddie gets really really bad bloody poop (sorry it thats TMI lol)

hey that was who we were seeing also:yuck:

Daniel has luckly had the same reaction to each of the things that he has an intolerance to; really bad rash on checks, anal area, and also screams bloody murder about 30min afterwards; and if we are really lucky we get a very thick mucos episode about 1hr later or even a few minutes depending on the food/ how much.

oh and about the poo question; doesn't it become second nature to "investigate" each bm that they have. :giggle2: So definity not TMI for me. We actually have "laughable" conversations with Dr. Barth about them.

Good Morning! I'm in West Fort Worth. I't nice to know of others in the area. I'd love to meet with others too :-).

I've got a mama in Irving with her 2nd due in April that is looking to CD. Anyone in that area to share experiences with? I know I wish I had seen different diapers before I started. Actually, I'd still like to see different ones. My experience has been limited to Fuzzi Bunz and Motherease.

Try Brees Bums in Richardson, she has a pretty good selection.

Also there is a place called Babies Bottoms and More but they are moving and have yet to say when they will be reopening.

I just moved to the Dallas area about 2 months ago. I live in Arlington. I am new to cloth diapering (haven't even gotten started yet) and am trying to figure out which diapers to use. AIO's seem so convenient, pockets look like they may be a little more absorbant than AIO's, but pre-folds seem to be the cheapest... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm kinda over whelmed!!!

Anybody have any extras that I could try of each to see what works before I go spend a small fortune?

Thanks

Go to babies bottoms and more, they have a deal where you pay like $200 and they will give you all kinds of diapers to try, and then you just return the ones you didn' like and exchange them for the ones you did like, or if you don't like any of them she will give you a complete credit. I wish i had know about it, it would have sAVED ME A BUNDLE!

I spoke with Diana at Baby Bottoms and More today. What a sweet lady. I'm looking forward to meeting her and seeing her store.

She said she will probably be at the store tomorrow but everything is still in boxes. The Monday after next is when she is pushing to be ready for the official opening. Hours and official opening day will be noted on the web page but she is still taking calls and meeting with mamas before then.

She is still doing the diaper trials. If you do that you are actually trying out used diapers and then you pay to cover her cleaning cost of the diapers when you are done. It is a special cleaning so things aren't passed between babies. Thank goodness she's careful.

I'm excited! :lostit:

Oh, I was so looking forward to a field trip tomorrow! Oh well. Maybe she could do a special preview day for DS members, and we could all meet up. Kind of a "soft" opening for her.

Other than trials, does anybody know if she keeps a stock of used diapers for sale individually? I'm trying to buy CDs locally, so I can save on shipping and and actually SEE and TOUCH before I buy, but CDs on Craigslist are few and far between, and usually far away from where I live (which ironically is not too far from this store).

Well, I'm new to CDing and not due until May so I only have a couple of PFs. I'm probably going to primarily do PFs if it works for me, but I will need some fitteds for DH and the grandparents who will not get enough practice to be able to do PFs effectively on demand. DH is on board with the CDing as long as it's not difficult for him and others to use and is really resistant to used. However, I can sew a bit so if I had some used fitteds for models I could convert some PFs to fitteds fairly easily. I have a bunch of patterns already, but they are all so different in dimensions and shapes even when the same size and I have nothing but size 5 sposies to compare them to. :giggle:

Hi! I'm from Irving-- my husband is attending grad school at UofD. We're country folk from Idaho and just a bit lost in this huge city! We have a precious girl, Elbereth or "Berry" who is 18 months, and another Treasure on the way at the end of March. We're just starting to look into cloth diapers for both little people and I'm especially interested in making my own AIOs.

BTW, what have you potty-training or post-potty-training moms found to be the most convenient form of cloth diapering?

Blessings!

BTW, what have you potty-training or post-potty-training moms found to be the most convenient form of cloth diapering?

Well, I live near Bree's Bums so I asked her about that for a my then 3YO. Different brands fit differently and are thicker/thinner. I wound up getting 3 pairs of Imse Vimse training pants, which are something like $12. They work fairly well, although like all training pants if you have a super soaker it's going to leak. I use it on my 2.5YO now, and if she goes through all 3 in a day, I switch to the cheaper Gerber ones you can get at Walmart (or if I know she's due for a poop) I don't put it on her overnight, but I've heard from others that do they always use a doubler. My 4YO is still mastering potty training and has occasional accidents, so I just use the Gerbers on her. Her main issue is getting to the potty in time, so Gerber is fine for catching the drips but is not good for learning that wet feels icky, because it doesn't hold much at all.

BTW, I have noticed that Bree's and Babies Bottoms have some overlap in the products they carry, but there seems to be a big difference in what brands they carry. Maybe it's a branding license thing or whatever, but it seems like it would really be worth it to go to both stores if you are still trying to figure out what you might use. At least we have the option to see/feel it in DFW, many people have to buy online and pray they get what they need.

I'm a maybe, but I would be there late if at all. We have lunch plans that day with another family, so it depends how quickly I get done with that. And as you know, when both families have multiple kids the risk of cancel is 50/50 so if that happens then I can be there earlier.

Or if you find someplace online that it's cheaper to buy in bulk from, let me know and maybe we can go into together on a purchase. I'm also interested in making my own diapers, but I'm just starting so I've only used Velcro for my prototypes. Thanks!

I've been thinking about selling the 19 brand new white old style med. FB I bought a few months ago. The problem is most people don't seem interested in white, new or not :crying: . Do any of you know someone in the area that does embroidery on PUL? That may encourage some interest or at least make my DH happier about using them :giggle:. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

:yay: I'll be there! I'm on the Lent wagon, but I'd love to meet up with some of you guys. Does Diana carry any type of carriers? I know Bree carries some MeiTei's. I used a sling and a baby bjorn when Ava was little, but I would love to get something for now (if she lets me use it). I met a lady at the Scottish Rite a few weeks ago and she makes Mei Tei's. Would anyone be willing to bring one extra of the diapers they use and let me try them on the boys just to see how they fit? I got a chance to try Kushis and they do not work for him. Poor little guy was walking bow-legged and looking at me with this "What the heck did you do to me?" Look on his face. It was really funny.

Anyway, I also found out that Mother Ease fits him well. Haven't had a chance to try anything on Noah yet. I was in the process of putting the Mother Ease on him, and he peed in it before I even had it fastened, little bugger! LOL

Anyway, Hugs and God bless!

Is Diana the owner of the diaper store we're going to on Saturday?

What is the name of the store and what city is it in? I met a lady at the LeLeche League meeting this morning who is interested in going with us.

I told her I would call her with all the info....also, what time are we supposed to be meeting there?

I'm riding with someone else, but I want to be able to inform Amanda (the new momma) about all the plans.

Thanks a bunch

You know, I'm sure Bree would be agreeable to hosting a DFW meetup too. Why woudn't she? Maybe next time we can meet there. There is a Cici's pizza next door, as well as MANY restaurants on Campbell road in general, so if it's a long trek there are many child-friendly eating options nearby.

If that sounds good to everyone, maybe we can do another meetup in March there. The only problem is Spring Break conflicts for those with school-age kiddos, so maybe late February makes more sense. What works for everone else? I don't mind spearheading it if you tell me what days/times are best since I live so near there.

Blessings!

Hi, ladies! Great to find all of you on this board!
I've been trying to skim and catch up on the meetup tomorrow. I'd love to join in! I need to double check with DH that there's nothing I need to be around here for with him. I started in cloth with DS1 and 2. I've used everything from prefolds and covers, fitteds, pockets, AIOs, and I'm now dabbling in wool with #3.

I stopped in BB&M the day she was closing and she had a brand new box of Becos. (for those of you who were interested) They are beautiful. I have Beco envy. I have a camel colored Ergo. Bland but highly functional. I lust for the beauty of the Beco though.:drif: Went to the Peppermint sale and bought a mei tai. Loving it! I'm strung out on the babywearing thing. I have a Moby, Maya, Ella Roo Mei Tai and the Ergo. Btwn that and CD addiction I'm not saving us any money!

I think I've finally decided what to put in my stash.

12 Bum Genius One Size Pockets
12 Medium Thirsties AIO's
24 Indian Premium Prefolds
4 Thirsties covers
5 Snappies
6 Doublers
Total: 498.25

Then:
$20.00 for a dirty diaper bag
$7.00 for a wet bag
$30.00 for a Diaper Sprayer...

For a grand total of $555.25

I figured if the baby needs 15 diapers a day, and the toddler needs 8 a day, this would give me 2 days worth of diapers and I'm only doing diaper laundry every other day.

What do you all think? It seems kindof expensive to me. What is your input?

Thanks!!
God bless,
Michelle

Well, I think you could cut out 3 of those snappi's, but that doesn't help you out too much. What about FSOT? Have you thought about buying the pockets used? With the new 3.0's out, you may be able to find some good deals on 2.0's.

my opinion...scratch the diaper sprayer and bum genius. i'd buy a couple thirsties packages from my girl leslie www.lesliesboutique.com and stick with them and prefolds. leslie is super to work with and has great prices! oh and the dirty diaper bag you can buy a camping bag from walmart for $3 and it works great  (my 2 have lasted years)

Michelle_M

We actually want to go all new on the larger size diapers because they will be going through two kids and this way I KNOW that they would last.

Leslie IS fabulous! (If you are talking about Leslie from Leslie's Boutique). I've been to her site today and actually called and asked her some questions.

The reason we decided to go with Bum Genius, is because I have 3 month old who weighs about 12lbs and a 2 1/2 yr old who weighs 26 lbs, I figured if I got some One Size diapers they both could use them if I ran out of prefolds.

I figured doing a combination of One Size, prefolds, and AIO's would be the way to go and would save a little money than just doing AIO's for both kids.

I just thought that just going AIO for Christian and all AIO for Noah would be more expensive than doing the combo....

What do you all think?

Michelle

PS And this reply was to both responses of my earlier post. Thanks for sharing your opinions.

I haven't even started with the cloth wipes yet. I tried to discuss it with DH and he's not willing to try it. Maybe once he gets used to cloth diapers I can convince him.

I know it would save money from having to constantly buy wipes.

How many would I need, do you think?

I was thinking about making some with old t-shirts and some $1 flannel from WMart(two sided). But I don't have a serger. Will it be ok with a regular sewing machine. Should I make them large enough to fold over an lay in the disposable wipes box?

So I was thinking... we definately need a closer diaper store than Babie Bottoms and Bree's.

I'm kicking around the idea of opening a cloth diaper business. Would you all be interested in buying from me if I put in the time and money to start one up? It would be online and at my house for starters, and then go from there.

What do you all think? It's just a rough idea I thought about last night. I haven't even looked into the cost of starting up. Just wanted some opinions.

Michelle you might want to tell dh that the cloth wipes actually GRAB the poo and stuff where the regular wipes just seem to smear it around. I LOVE the 6 that i got this Saturday and need to get more and the solution. I have been just using earth's best shampoo and some water for now.

I just got my mom's (latest) old non-serging sewing machine (I previously had her 40+YO machine, and it broke beyond cost-effective repair) so I am going to be trying to make doublers with microfiber shop towels and $1 flannel from Wamart tomorrow that way. I have read other threads that lead me to believe that a tight zig zag or overlock stitch works fine for this. I'll let you know how it turns out, and will throw them in the next load of wash to see if they hold up okay. If they do, I'm going to make wipes too. I'd make them to fit whatever size container you store them in. I have an old wipes warmer that was never used I'm going to try out for this.

Ooo, that sounds great. I really like using the microfiber shop towels from WalMart. To me it seems they are more absorbant than the other microfiber inserts ie Thirsties, Cottonbabies etc.
I never thought of putting a flannel over it. Would fleece work on one side or is flannel just better? I've got some fleece(or I could make a diaper cover someday :giggle2: . Are you going to put the flannel just on one side? How are you going to sew the microfiber towels...folded in half, thirds? Will you just stitch the ends and one side with nothing in the middle? :headscratch:

Well, today I made a doubler out of $1 Walmart flannel and a MF shop towel from Sams club. I documented the whole thing on the Thrifty Families forum, link at bottom of post. This is what I learned:

When I prewashed the $1 flannel, the rough edges frayed really bad. So I don't think regular zigzag or overlock would work on the rough edge. Maybe serger, but I don't have one so I don't know. Maybe more expensive flannel you could do that, but not the cheap stuff - better off turn and topstitch.

I think more than two layers of MF wrapped in flannel would take too long to dry. If you need more than that, just use two doublers made that way.

It was WAY easy to do this. You don't even need a machine, you could do it all by hand and have doublers for less than 50 cents each.

I only wrapped these in flannel because I want to be able to use them as a doubler on top of a PF, so I don't want the baby to touch the MF at all. If you are stuffing it in a pocket, you don't even need to sew a shop towel - just fold it to fit. I've read lots of posts where people do that with one or two whole MF shop towels.

Also today, my DD2.5YO threw a whole MF shop towel in a (clean) toilet, took it out, threw it soaking wet elsewhere in the house. The toilet was almost empty. I think that pretty much tells you how absorbent these MF shop towels are. ;)

Oh I completely agree on absorbtion with MF towels. We just fold ours now for our FB. I guess I shouldn't make more work for myself making fancy inserts. I should just make some wipes and forget it! Full-time work and full-time mom/wife is enough!

I took the plunge!!!!!!!!!

I placed my first order for diapers. I'm getting 12 BG OS, 6 Thirsties AIO's, 3 Thirsties Fab Fitteds, 4 Organic Caboose prefolds, and 4 Organic Caboose contours. 1 large wet bag for home, 1 smaller wet bag for outings, and a diaper sprayer.

If I REALLY like the Organic Caboose, then I'll buy more of those, if they are just "Ok" when compared to regular prefolds, then I'll buy regular prefolds.

I got some covers off of diaper swappers, and am getting 1 kissaluvs and cover from Craigslist.

Now I just need snappis. Anyone know where I can get some. It's rediculous because most of the websites charge flat shipping, and I don't want to pay $5.95 in shipping for a $2.00 item that weighs hardly anything.

I'm so excited though. My Organic Caboose packages will be shipping out to me on Monday, and my BG and Thirsties will be shipping out Tuesday.

I also got a great deal, the store where I bought my BG and Thirsties, she is giving me discount on a diaper sprayer AND a free large wet bag!!!!

I had looked at the Organic Caboose on a web site and it was like $38 for a 4pack (with a free snappi). I found some up for bid on Ebay and got them for $26.49 INCLUDING SHIPPING!!!!!!!!!! Has anybody tried them yet?

I'm so excited to FINALLY be getting started. The only thing that stinks though (ha,"stinks," no pun intended) is that My diapers won't be here till sometime next week, and I barely have enough disposables to get Christian through today, and Noah through tomorrow. So THIS STINKIN CLOSE and I have to go buy more diapers...ARGHHHHHH!!

The cool thing though, is when I was changing Christian's diaper today, he actually ASKED for his cloth diaper (I have one cloth fitted for him and like 4 or 5 pfs for Noah)! I couldn't believe it. How cool is that. I'm so glad that he likes them. I wasn't sure how he would react at first, but this is the second time when I"ve said "Ok, lay down for a diaper change." and his resonse has been to say "oth iper, oth iper!" How cool is that?

Ok, sorry this kindof turned into a ramble!

God bless,
Michelle

I agree. It would be nice to have a closed room where the kids could play and we could spread out our diapers for show and tell for the newbie's! Friday and Saturday are great days. Let me know if there are any suggestions. I would offer a room in our church but we are building a new one. Anyone else have an offer in central Fort Worth?

Maybe a Community Center?

What about at the central Market off Hulen?

Its not closed off, but there is a play center, and we can get lunch or whatever and sit out under the terrace thing and let the kids play and scream and lay out all of the stuff on the tables, plus you might find some interested people out there too...

What is Central Market? I'm up for going if someone can swing buy and give the kids and me a ride. Anytime except Sundays work for me.

Also, what kind of detergent do you all use on your diapers? I thought I'd get some Bac-out but I found out that I cannot use either kind by that company on the Bum Genius Diapers.

Any suggestions on type and where to buy?

Thanks
God bless,
Michelle

upper/lower GI, colonoscopy, tissue biopsy for celiac disease, checking the enlarged lymph node on the side of his neck, and something else. He has to be cleaned out before the surgery. They are calling it a surgery because they are putting him under and also not knowing if they will have to remove the lymph node, if they were just spraying his throat then they would consider it procedure.

I get the Country Save here in Addison where i work at a place called Sprouts. There isn't one in Tarrant Country at ALL. I haven't looked at Centeral Market though

I tried Allens Naturally. It's expensive and it didn't work for us. I'm trying to recoupe a little money by selling it. One gallon was $50 with the pump and shipping and I only used it a half a dozen times. I'm sticking with Tide as it seems to get the stink out with a normal amount of detergent.

I use tide, too. It works better than anything else I have tried, and all my dipes are doing just fine with it. It's much easier for me since I use it on our reg clothes, too.

Got my diapers yesterday, OH MY GOSH I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Thirsties products. I put Noah in a Thirsties AIO and stuffed the pocket with an infant prefold last night. I put it on him around 10:00pm, he slept until about 9am this morning. The prefold was soaked, and the inside of the Thirsties was soaked, but the top (the part next to his skin) was oh so dry, and his bottom was nice and dry!!! Talk about a great over night diaper!!!!!!

And to be honest, I don't really like the Bum Genius One Size. They don't fit either of my boys as well as the Thirsties do. Which is kinda funny because Noah is kinda chubby and Chrisitan is very very skinny. Leslie is going to let me return them and exchange for more Thirsties. The Fab Fitteds with covers are great also. The Thirsties covers fit Noah with a prefold even better than a Bummis or Pro-rap! Gotta love gussets!

Dye some of it with kool-aid and do some needle felting? eBay has a ton of needle felting supplies at REALLY good prices and it's easy enough for kids to do!

I just started using CS detergent.....so we will see. According to their website they leave the least residue out of all major and earth friendly detergents.

Central Market is great! Im pretty sure they have bands there, and they do like evening dinners and things like that, they should have a big board tight outside of the exit door that has the line up for that month!

I live in Richardson, and we go to a chiropractor in Farmer's Branch, so I get Country Save at Sprouts on Forest Lane when I'm over there b/c I was told it's the only place in the area that carries it. I use it and love it! My oldest and I are allergic to Tide and other mainstream detergents, and the selection of HE detergents are pretty limited as it is, so this has been a godsend!
