We just moved last year, after 10 years in the Valley. Now we live in a town of less then 2,000 and are 2 hours from the nearest McDonalds! How's that for a change???

I was a member of a very active Vegas ap group on yahoo. Lots of playgroups, etc. I'd be happy to linky if any of you would like :) And may I say Vegas has the best LLL Mamas ever?? I was studying for leader, but moved before I finished. Lots of great ap mamas.

Oh, and I understand April Kermanis midwife office will be carrying cloth diapers!!!! (as well as some awesome slings and carriers ;) ;)) Sometimes I really miss the Mommy culture down there.

I go to the mommy group at the Greenspun Center at St. Rose San Martin on Durango @ Warm Springs.. it's at 11 on Wednesdays if anyone is interested. We had Gymboree come out last week.. very fun! There is a Henderson group too, and I believe they meet Fri at 11 at the Greenspun Center off of Green Valley pkwy @ 215..

Hi girls, looks like there are a few of us up in the NW area of town. I have two friends (one up here and one in the SW) who also CD. We get together for an informal playgroup periodically. If anyone is interested, pm me.

BTW, anyone have a recommendation for a doula experienced in VBAC hospital births, preferably with twins as well? I'm hoping to VBAC with my twins (due in March) at Summerlin hospital. I'm not brave enough to HBAC with twins!! I had an emergency c/s at 31 weeks with my first due to severe pre-eclampsia - one case in which a c-section was actually medically warranted. My baby and I could have died without it. Induction takes three days (they were trying) at that gestation and my kidneys (among other things) were about to fail.

Olive and Bean , a natural baby boutique in the Village of Centennial Hills shopping area (the new construction just south of Albertson's on Farm near Durango, by Joey's Seafood) carries g-diapers, bummis wraps and pre-folds and Charlie's soap. I think Dreamalot baby in Summerlin carries BumGenius.

Curious how many of y'all are still in Vegas? We are moving down there from Alaska. We leave here on Monday the 20th, so just a very short time away. We will be settling somewhere north of Ann, so northwest area. If anyone knows of a good Baptist church, I would be very interested in hearing about it. Once we get settled I would love to get to meet some of y'all. Do any of you homeschool?

dulciaj
04-15-2009, 03:56 PM
I'm still here for the time being. I've heard Shadow Hills Baptist is good but it's a very large church, so depends on what you are looking for. We go to Spring Meadows Presbyterian Church (a PCA church) and love it. It's on the south side of town though (and we live NW). There is another PCA church (Citywide Redeemer) that is new and small up on the north side. It started after we were already here.

I don't homeschool (kids are 2 and 1month) but have some friends who do so can hook you up with them if you want. There's also a homeschool group they mingle with occasionally.

See a previous post by me about stores in the NW. That's all I know of. Unfortunately, even though Vegas is big, it's not crunchy enough to have real CD ing stores... not many people CD here (by my estimation of the lack of buying/selling on craigslist compared to the Denver craigslist.)

We're at Creech too. PM when you get here or if you have any questions.

I'm here in the NW! I'm very, very new to CD and I'm still trying to figure everything out. I only have three Bumkins AIO's (or are they pockets? Not sure about the difference) that I got at a garage sale for $1 each. I LOVE them. I want to make the full-time switch but I will only be able to afford a few at a time. My son is six months old. Any suggestions?

dulciaj
04-29-2009, 04:54 PM
I would recommend BumGenius one size pocket diapers as your baby is big enough to wear them without being swallowed and they will grow with him. They can be expensive new but last for a long time and can be used with other kids. I have bought most of mine off this site, craigslist or as seconds (need fixed if you know how to sew) from various websites like montanadiapers.com. The cheapest way to go is prefolds and covers but they are not as convenient. If you want to come over and "talk" diapers, I can show you what I have and the different options before you buy (I have a smattering of everything). I'm also in the NW (Gilcrease and Grand Canyon). You can see what fits your kid from my stash since different diapers fit skinny kids better and others fit larger kids. Send me a PM if you want more info, etc.

We just got here to Vegas, but our daughter is getting ready to potty train. If you are interested, you are welcome to come check out all my diapers and see if there's anything that catches your eye. Some of them are definitely girly, but most of what I have is gender neutral. PM me if you want and I'll let you know when we're in a house (should be within a week or two) and we can set something up.

I think my son is lonely :( We go to play at the park, Childs' Play, etc but all the kid's are usually older than him and I really, really want him to have some time with a kid around his age. Anyone want a playdate? Could be at my house (I live near Washington and Jones) or heck, I'd even babysit for an hour or two. (Although I'd love to have a mommy-friend, I'm also lonely)

We are considering a move and Vegas is one of the places we are thinking about... we actually just started thinking about it last weekend, but thought I'd ask a few questions. What areas of Vegas are good and which areas should we stay away from? At first I was against it thinking I really don't want to raise a kid in vegas... but i've only been to the strip and obviously we wouldn't be living there. How are the schools? We're looking for a house with max price of about 250,000 depending on what we're able to sell our house for or rent it for. Advice would be great! Thanks ladies :)

When we were told we were moving here (we're military) we were told by people who had already been here that if you are raising a family you want to live north of Ann Rd. We are technically south of Ann, but only by a block. You should be able to find a house for that price. I don't know about the schools because we homeschool.

honestly, the further on the outskirts you can get, the better. i am personally a native of the north west end of the valley. IF i had to move...i would be north of ann. if you need any help looking, i am more than happy to help :) i am vegas born and raised, and know the ins and outs of most neighborhoods.

Just repeating what we were told. I know several people who live in different areas and like where they are, though the majority of people I've met live near or north of Ann. I've not been here long enough to say to what degree north of Ann is better or worse than the rest of town.

DH & I basically grew up here in Vegas though. I'm originally from No. Cali. DH would love to go back to Michigan if it weren't for the horrid economy there (not that it isn't all over the country...but MI is really bad). I don't mind actual winters and such like that...prefer it over the heat but without a stable economy there is no way I'd move there.

To the mama thinking of moving here...

The Southwest is an amazing place to live! I wouldn't live anywhere else. There isn't a lot of traffic, we're close to the highway and other major streets, yet secluded enough that it's very quiet. Great parks!

Our house just sold for 90,000! Wish I had read this before, you could have bought ours.

Vega is a great place to raise children. There are so many things to do with kids here. Hiking, camping, parks, splash parks, swimming so much of the year, sports, community centers all over, lots of libraries.

The schools are 'eh'... we homeschool. The majority of schools here are year round and use "tracks" where they have off 3 week increments all throughout the year.

Let me know if you need any help finding a house. I have a lot of real estate agents I've worked with over the past 8 months ;)

wow - that's so weird about valerie and matt!

No, we haven't gotten a chance to hook up with any groups. I would like to though. We homeschooled by ourselves until December of last school year. Then we went with Nevada Virtual Academy for our 6 year old, and continue to HS ourselves with the younger one (4 years old).

Anyway, I'm Lexy, and DH is Dean. We're expecting our first in November. I moved here from Michigan about 3 years ago and I'm still lonely!! I've made one good girl friend and that's it.
We plan on doing plenty of baby wearing, and I already have my CD stash. Also, AP is the way we're leaning.

If anyone else is in need of conversation, let me know! I'd love to meet up :)

SO I'll certainly be looking for playgroups our hang out sessions.. I'm going to CSN to work towards a degree in nursing, but I wont be back in school till probably Spring.. ]:

Hey! Where in MI are you from? I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, but lived with DH in Royal Oak for a few years before finally moving out of state. I also went to LSSU in the UP!

My husband was born and raised in Ionia. My sister's husband was born and raised about halfway between Lyons and Pewamo. DH's family (including his aunts, uncles, and cousins) is almost totally in Ionia still, though he has family in Grand Rapids area, Lansing, and his sister is now in Holland.

Too funny! I'm from Kalamazoo. Lived there for 23 years! I'm familiar with Grand Rapids, had a boyfriend from there. I sometimes miss it! Kalamazoo is a good town, just too much snow for my taste!

We used to go to Kalamazoo every summer... well Portage, but close enough... because my aunt lived there. I miss it sometimes, but then it snows and I forget those feelings. I'd rather be in Vegas. We're going to visit in a couple weeks. I'm excited!

Yes, in the NW, Olive and Bean near Albertsons on Durango and 95 (http://www.oliveandbeanboutique.com). They sell slings made by a friend of mine (www.slingsbysarah.com) and they sell other wraps and mei tais.

Also Dagerman's Just for Kids on Rainbow in the SW has hotslings and maybe some other things.

Babies r'us sells the Moby wrap and other slings.

But I think Olive and Bean is your best bet if you want help fitting and wrapping, etc. Check out their website as they have babywearing 101 free classes where Sarah comes in and can give you a custom opinion, etc. PM me if you want any more info.

I had forgotten about Well Rounded Mama - I've never been there as it's a bit far away. I might have to check out the mama's circle one day though.

Ok, here's a shameless plug, since you all live in Vegas - I'm a photographer trying to get my business going after the birth of my twins so if you are looking for portraits of your kids or families, check out my website: www.roamingreflectionsphotography.com I'll give you a discount if you mention you found out about me on here.

We keep talking about it, but every time I set a date, no one responds or comes. The first time ladies were wonderful to let me know they couldn't make it or that something had come up, which was greatly appreciated. But the last one no one really said anything about. So, maybe if someone else picks a date something will get done. We are getting ready to be out of town, though, for 3 weeks, so unless someone wants to get together in the next week I'm out of it for a bit.

HI! I live in Henderson. I just found this site and am so excited to see so many other CD moms! I wouldn't be myself if I didn't shamelessly plug my business! My DH and I started a cloth diaper delivery service that serves the entire Las Vegas valley! Our name is Happi Bunz Diaper Service. Check out our website! happibunz.com

Hey Lexy. Have you checked out the Mommy Mixer at the Barbara Greenspun Center on Green Valley Parkway? It's at 11 am on Fridays. I met tons of moms with babies my son's age. There is another one on Wednesdays by San Martin Hospital. It's led by a Lactaction Consultant. The Wednesday one is a big more laid back, if you are looking to check it out.

Also, Discovery Park on Paseo Verde is a hotspot for moms in Henderson. We go there all the time. I also wanted to tell you I'm from Michigan too! I still have a house in GR that I'm trying to sell.

Hi!

I live Henderson, too! I've spent the last 10 months trying to figure out how to take care of a baby, how to find time to do housework, how to find time to do some business work, be social, worry about my son being alone all day along etc :) And then recently I figured I should join some events around the town. In fact today was the first day I went to a class. I'm planning on keeping it up.

I've been trying to go to Momma's Circle at Well Rounded Mama. I actually went there a lot last year, for my prenatal visits with April (the wonderful midwife). On those days, every Thursday, somehow, my son spends a horrible night, so we are all exhausted and we can barely get up around noon, so I'm always late. We are definitely not morning people as a family. Anything before noon is too early for us :) But it has to change if I want my baby to see more people than his mom and dad all day! Now that the weather is great outside as well, there shouldn't be any excuses anymore!

Anyway, I'd love to meet with the rest of you. Especially around Henderson. As we don't go out much, I'm still not too comfortable driving with my DS long distances.

A few hours ago I registered for a class called Gymboree at Black Mountain Recreation Center which starts on March 26th.

Some of the Mommy Mixers I checked didn't accept babies over 10 months old, and my son will be 10 months old in 3 days. Amy, do you know the age limit of Mommy Mixer at the Barbara Greenspun Center?

Also what happens at the Discovery park? Is it just a hangout place? I don't know anything about it.

The Mommy Mixer at the BGSWC is up to a year. Also, Discovery Park is just a park with 2 playgrounds. One is specifically geared towards toddlers and is gated. There is a lot of grass to let your DS crawl around and explore.

Can understand that. We seem to be split between Henderson and Northwest Vegas. I know there are a few that are elsewhere, but finding a place for everyone is going to be tricky.

Maybe we could meet at Town Square sometime?? It's close to the expressway and has a fun splashpad and shopping.

Another fun thing might be to meet up at Springs Preserve. I've been meaning to go and a meet up would give me a good excuse.

Also, any Vegas mamas go to Child's Play. We just joined and I would love to meet some cd'ing mamas.
