Hi.
Just wanted to crash your thread to say that I'm jealous. We went to Maui over Thanksgiving - I was raised on the beach in Los Angeles, so I thought there wouldn't be anything that I was impressed by. I was wrong. I *loved* it there so much. How in the world does an entire island smell so good?! :giggle:
Enjoy it for me while it snows here tonight. :yuck:

Hi Mamas! I'll be joining you all in Nov. We got orders to Oahu. Doc will be at Makalapa. We will be in housing, just don't know which one yet. Can someone answwer a couple housing questions for me? We are bringing our 2 dogs (yes, it's a pain in the a$$, but they are family too). Does housing have fences in the back yard? Many of the housing communities here do, but I can't seem to find out if they do there. We have one escape artist who wll jump a 5 foot fence, but we do have a 6' tall play yard we are using now, would we be able to set it up in our back yard for them? I don't want to move it if we won't be able to use it since it weighs so much! TIA! Can't wait to meet you all once we get there!

I have not seen all housing but most of the bases in Hawaii do not have fenced yard....or if they do they are very small (maybe like 10x10 and mostly concrete). Some of the older housing on some of the bases have yards but that's pretty rare.

Hi Mama,
The new military housing in Salt Lake doesn't have any fencing. It's all open area. But the houses are a big improvement! The old ones were apartments, and the military finally decided to build actual single-family homes! The homes they built 5-10 years back are shared by two families, like a duplex or something like that (sorry, I'm not sure of housing term). It looks like a single family house but isn't. This make the home much smaller for those with larger families. In Salt Lake there's houses still being built but my guess is it'll also be without fencing.
If you're thinking about off-base housing, well, it depends on the homeowner. Many of the older homes that do have fencing, it's mostly chain link, and not very high. As for putting up your play yard, that'll depend on the community association rules (if there's any CA). If not, then it'll just depend on what the homeowner/landlord says.
HTH!

Ok,I'm freaking out a bit here. We are looking into where we are going to stay before we get our housing sorted out. The hotels are SO expensive! I know we get TLE but I also know it won't kick in immediately. Not to mention that no one allows dogs so we are going to have to kennel them, which the Navy doesn't pay for. Something we didn't want to have to do. I got a reservation for them at the Schofield MWR kennels, but have no idea how long it is really going to take to get our housing. I called the housing office and they said that it could be as short as 1 month or as long as 6 months! ACK!!! MAJOR FREAK OUT!!!

I just returned home yesterday with my newly adopted miracle:) My DS was born Oct 3rd in Ohio, and we got the call that we had been matched when the birthmother was in active labor. We jumped on the next flight out and met our son when he was about 12 hours old. I was in Ohio with the babe for almost a month, until the paperwork was done and we could come back to HI. I'm excited to get started cloth diapering, and to meet other Mama's in the area:)

Ahh, i really wanted to go and got a flat on the way. If you were going East on H1 and saw silver Jeep on the side of the road - that was me!
I'm so up for a play date. I don't know if any good parks cause I'm so new.

Thanks to all the mamas who made it to the babywearing meeting. It was awesome to see so many new faces!!
Wish I could plan a meet up with everyone but alas the military has other plans for us. We are moving to Virginia on Thursday:goodvibes: . We have loved Hawaii and traveled a ton so if anyone ever has any questions about places to go PM me anytime.
A great park to meet in that isn't on base (sometime hard for non-military folks) is Moanalus Gardens. It's a huge park at the bottom of the road that leads to Tripler Hospital. It has bathrooms, there is tons of shade, not crowded and there is a cute koi pond. No playground equipment but it never was a ploblem when I met moms there because the kids just all played together in the grass.

Hi KaiMom! I was behind you on base this morning while I was taking my daughter to school. I saw the cloth diaper sticker on your car then I noticed your license plate and immediately recognized your name:giggle2:
Too bad you're leaving, but I'm sure you'll have fun in Virginia. Good luck!

We just came from VA! Where are you going to be living? If it is near Norfolk, I know of a wonderful 3 bed/1 bath house for rent by another Navy Mama. PM me if you want more info about the Norfolk area!!

Hawaii Mayor Harry Kim vetoed the bill to ban GMO farming in Hawaii, but we have the chance to override the veto! Please sign this and pass it on! Mahalo! GMO farming has been devastating for all farmers.

A different group! This one is by the Moby folks at BabyAwearness - the other one was by the babywearing "club", E Ho'ohapai na Kamalei - Carry the Children (carrythechildren.wordpress.com). I suspect there is a bunch of overlap. And it is a good excuseto meet up with other Mamas at a cool little store.

Don't let your baby go playing outside in just a diaper. The Hawaiian dirt stains.

Like PP said - hawaii dirt stains, major! Ever heard of Red Dirt Shirts - yep, this is the dirt they use to stain those shirts....
There is a pretty good trade on CL of CDs. There are actually quite a lot of us here who CD. We do have 1 good (expensive) CD store, Babyawearness (they have a website you can check out). I go up there to check out the newest, latest things coming out - then order online if I want to get them. Better to get your dipes online and have them shipped, especially if you are getting them from DS. We do have aTON of sun, so if you line dry or need to sun your dipes you are in luck. Getting most of the soaps people like is not too hard, we do have a few great whole foods type stores that carry a lot of choices. We do also have a Whole Foods.
Where are you moving to? If there is anything we can help you with once you get here, let us know. I had fantastic help form several DS Mamas when we got here. 2 of them are my best girls here!

Hard Water! Ugh! Such a pain to wash diapers in & keep the stink away!
I do let my DS run around outside in diapers though. They're too cute & it's just too hot to wear clothes a lot of the time!

Do you mind me asking where you live? We moved to SAlt Lake about the same time we started CDing and I suspect (:blush:sorry I'm a dope) we have hard water. Not even sure.

Yep, Salt Lake. I've used RLR now on just my inserts & even gone to the extreme of washing my inserts in Tide once. I continue to do my usual washing in Calgon & Rockin Green. But, I'm sure I'll have to do an insert Tide wash occasionally.

ok so at least I know we have hard water now :giggle:
We have coin op and a lot of the time I hand wash in the tub. I have been using infant pfs in my pockets and prem pfs and covers the rest of the time. I also use hemp doublers and recently had to re-boil/dawn them. I havent had a real problem with stink since I did away with MF. I also just ordered some bamboo/zorb inserts so I hope those don't stink. I am loving having DD wake up and not reeking of ammonia

I've also gotten rid of most (but not all) of my mf inserts and gone to bamboo/zorb, bamboo sherpa & I think the last I ordered are a bambo/hemp mix. Love them! I'm all pockets & AI2s. I line dry my pockets & dryer dry inserts & the AI2 diapers. I wash every 3 days (maybe 2). We have a top loader (old model) so I rinse once & then hot wash & cold rinse. Though I think I'm going to start doing a first rinse with just the poopy ones, then rinse again with all of the rest before washing. I work FT so have to spray out the poopies (from daycare) when I get home every night. They're sometimes pretty stuck on so I think that contributes to the stink. I feel lucky though that my sitter puts up with my cloth obsession;-)

totally lucky. My DD goes to my grandma during the day and she will not use cloth. She wouldn't even use the babyfood I made and insisted she buy for her own house. Whatever. I have better things to fight about. I'm lucky she watches the kid for free. Give and take right?
ETA~its totally cool that there are other CDing mamas on the island LOL. Sometimes I feel like the only one. NONE if my friends CD.

Wow...I just found this place on DS lol. Didn't know yall were here :o) I cloth diaper my 9 month old twins and love it!
Yep...I live in Pearl City and the water here is HARD!! But recently I had someone tell me that her husband works for Board of Water Supply and said Hawaii has soft water??? I know for a fact that we have limescale...and lots of it and that I'm sure that's from hard water. Anywho...one way that I found to get the stink completely out for good (or at least a long time) is we boil our MF inserts for just a couple minutes. And I do use Oxyclean every once in a while in our hot wash. I was doing a hot water soak with Rockin' Green, cold water wash and then hot water wash with Rockin' Green and it was still not smelling anywhere near clean and I could still smell the amonia. Sooo I went and boiled all inserts then cold wash, hot wash with Charlie's and occassionally a little Oxyclean...so far no problems.
I feel you about feeling like the only person who does cloth lol...I only recently met two ladies who CD (like within the last month) lol. Everyone else thinks I'm nuts. We do our own baby food and stuff, too...so my family thinks I'm the crunchiest person around...which I am far from lol.
corinne76
03-16-2010, 05:33 PM
I made my baby food, mostly cause I'm cheap LOL. I've bleached my inserts a couple of times and that worked fine but I'm in the process of selling them. I just prefer using prefolds in my pockets

I made my own babyfood too (fruits & veggies). The homemade stuff tastes way better than the jarred. Plus, you have lots of different options....mango, zucchini, avocado, refried beans(his fave from 7-12 mo) etc. My DS is the BEST eater now & I have to take the credit for feeding him REAL food...no tasteless stuff. I actually enjoy cooking though...so the babyfood thing is just an extension of my hobby.
We've got the limescale all over this house too...stuck permanently in the showers & the toilets. Yucky!
