Hi Everyone,
I am new to DS. I live in West Hartford so yea, I've definitely been to papaya patch. I have to say that I will sometimes research things before I buy them from there. Being in West Hartford center, they are a bit pricey. But I love the feel of the store and it is sooo kid and breastfeeding-friendly.

Hey, I'm actually a native Californian, but we moved to Ithaca for DH to attend Cornell:thumbsup: I have to say, it was a HUGE adjustment, but Ithaca has grown on me and there are definitely things I'll miss. I thought we'd be heading back to warm, sunny CA when he graduates in May, but turns out Yale's program is the one for him, so looks like I'm stuck in the cold for another 5 yrs or so:cry: I'm sure New Haven will grow on me eventually too, just like Ithaca and it'll be so much closer to just about everything.

New Haven is great to visit. Tons of museums , parks etc. I lived in the city for years and had a great time. I now live in East Haven, which I love. The taxes aren't insane, the town is cute, and it's one of the few places on the shoreline where you can get a decent home for not a ton of money.

In January of 2008, I gave birth to my third child in the comfort of
my own home. It was my first homebirth and it was wholly joyous for
me and my family. I was attended by two wonderful women who had a
wealth of knowledge and understanding about the birth process and
helped me accomplish the birth of my choice. Those women are
available to support women in many of their health choices. They
nurture, educate, love, and care for a wide variety of women in
times of joy and growth and even in times of stress and sorrow. They
are experienced, knowledgeable, and professional. They are a part of
something amazing and empowering. They are Certified Professional
Midwives.

Does anyone know when their next diaper swap is? The last I heard, it was supposed to be sometime the last week of this month?
~April
i was just coming to post this! the next diaper swap hosted by papaya patch is sunday september 28th from 1-3pm. it will be held at knight hall preschool, which is located at 411 park rd. in west hartford.
i won't be there, i'm working at the store that afternoon. it's just as well, as i don't have anyone in diapers anymore, or anything to sell/swap either! :giggle:

I have two dd's, and am new to cloth diapers in general. Where is the papoose in Norwich? I've used the diapers from the Willi food co-op, they are great! They were the first diapers I tried and now I've made a few of my own too. Glad to see so many other cd'ing moms in ct!

I usually go to the mall in Milford (my fiance used to work at Yale New Haven hospital), but the Danbury one is so nice <3 It's a nice, scenic drive from where I am, too. Especially with the snow and the winding creek/stream that follows the road.
Thank you for the link. I haven't explored the site too indepth yet, so I'll need to check out the FSOT :) Which CD method do most people in this thread use? (Like I said before, prefold/covers were a disaster for me, which my fiance teases me about since I was so eager to use them)

No problem! I work at Gymboree at the Milford Mall. :goodvibes:
We used bumgenius and fuzzi bunz when we cloth diapered. If/when we ttc we'll probably use fitteds and wool.
suki_luv
01-11-2009, 11:44 AM
I'm curious...with wool, is it 100%? I, personally, have a sensitivity to wool (like sweaters and such). Does the same happen when you use wool on babies? Ahaha, I knit, so (in theory) I could knit my own covers...
iheartruiner
01-11-2009, 11:47 AM
Since I knit as well, usually covers for babies, I use 100% wool. There's SO many varieties, some that contain more or less dander, and some that is so soft, you'd never think it was wool at all. IMO, using wool on a baby wouldn't usually give you any issues. However, if you're honestly allergic, I might stay away from it.
If you did want to knit your own longies/shorties, covers, etc, 2 patterns I love are Sheepy Pants & Adorabubble.
suki_luv
01-11-2009, 11:51 AM
The wool looks so cute! Ahaha, I'm contemplating suffering through the knitting for that reason alone, LOL. Rashes? pfft that's what hydrocortizone (sp) is for ;)
iheartruiner
01-11-2009, 11:55 AM
exactly!! :giggle:
Most people I know who do use wool, use it year round since it allows the skin to breathe as opposed to using covers like bumGenius or FBs (which has PUL = polyurethane laminate)
suki_luv
01-11-2009, 12:17 PM
What kind of care does wool have when it comes to diaper covers?
iheartruiner
01-11-2009, 12:19 PM
Since I'm the worst at actually explaining things, here's a link on how to lanolize & care for your woollies. :goodvibes:
http://littlefornow.com/pages/lanolin.php
It's not difficult, but is labor intensive. You don't need to wash or lanolize each time you change a fitted/prefold under wool either which makes it easier to use IMO.
suki_luv

Yikes! Be careful (of course you will be but still!). The one nice thing about this is I can chill my drinks outside (well, as long as I bring them in before it gets freezing). I can't wait until it gets warmer so I can take my LO on walks! We have a quaint little shopping center half a mile from my house and a larger one about 2.3 miles away -- but that has to wait until I get more of my endurance back (gave birth on the 29th of Nov). Gotta start tiny and work my way back up ;)

Three is such a great age! I used to be the caregiver for my sister's youngest son before I moved to CT. I love the sentences he would try and put together. His favorite thing now is to tell him mom he's "too busy" when she asks him to do things now or to hum the Indiana Jones theme music while he runs around the house <3 I can't wait until my LO does those things! I know the time goes fast, but sometimes I'm at a loss at what to do with a 6 week old

LOL, 6 weeks seems so tough, but 3 is super challenging. at 6 weeks, you can do some tummy time, maybe read a simple book or two. Mostly IME, that time is good for bonding & developing a good routine. If you're breastfeeding, you should be establishing a good supply for your little one now & they might be going through a growth spurt really soon. :)
That age was such a breeze for us thinking back. I really miss it. :)
suki_luv
01-13-2009, 07:24 PM
Yeah we do lots of skin-on-skin bonding, tummy time (It's so cute to hear her little whimper cries of frustration! When I watch her my mental music is along the lines of eye of the tiger) and bfing. She reeally likes to nurse ;) I just worry that she's not getting enough stimuli. I worry that she's bored~
iheartruiner
01-13-2009, 07:42 PM
I doubt at 6w she'd be bored yet. ;) And if she is, she'd probably fall asleep. She's got adorable cheeks though!!
suki_luv
01-14-2009, 10:43 AM
True, True. I think it's the new mommy thing -- worried that I'm not doing enough/too much.
I love her cheeks! Her face (head) is starting to thin more now...you can see she has a neck now, LOL. She's a big girl (10.5lbs 22" at her 4w appt) but the only noticeable chub she has is her cheeks and a little fold on her upper thighs. Her daddy is tall though (I am so not) so I'm hoping she ends up somewhere between me and him ;)
iheartruiner
01-14-2009, 12:48 PM
I hear that! DS was skinny at birth & still is. He's about 30lbs at 3 years old. He had pretty much no chub, ever. So seeing chunky cheeks is super cute IMO! :)
suki_luv
01-15-2009, 08:38 AM
I like to pinch them, which makes her gurgle and/or smile now. she likes the attention! :) Ugh I have my pp check up today :/ it's snowing. Hopefully they dont close the dr office! My appt is late today, so hopefully the roads will be clear. I wish I knew if my dr lived locally XD :finger cross:

Ugh, I'm sorry. The roads aren't bad down here. We got about 2ish inches. The actually plowed and sanded my street today!
suki_luv
01-15-2009, 09:31 AM
They plowed earlier, but the snow is still falling (only gently now). I feel like such a kid, though! I don't want to go ;) But! I can't get another appt. Rwar. Snow makes me so unmotivated. Not to mention, I'm kinda sleepy. The LO had a hard night last night. She slept poorly and didn't want to nurse at all. The only way I could soothe her (she was a little banshee) was to hold her all night. Which...I kind of liked. Pretty soon she'll be too big (and heavy!) to hold the whole night through ;)
iheartruiner
01-15-2009, 01:46 PM
I couldn't appreciate that. :giggle: I really disliked holding Eddie all night long - but that was before I knew anything about babywearing or AP. ;)
suki_luv
01-15-2009, 05:05 PM
I have a sling that I use, but getting her into it is hard! She can't really hold herself up yet so getting it over her and my head is a juggle. When she was smaller I could wiggle her in with the sling already on, but that doesn't work so well now. Her daddy is convinced we're spoiling her because her grandma and me hold her so much. I found that after I had her, a bunch of my preconceived notions about how I was going to raise her changed. You just don't know what will work until you've got your baby in your arms. Her personality has dictated some of how we are rearing her.
iheartruiner
01-15-2009, 09:30 PM
Agreed. Eddie changed the way we thought about a LOT of things and now that he's older, I see where i should have changed back to how I thought to begin with. LOL!

01-16-2009, 12:40 PM
ahaha, yeah. We're going through that on a small scale with co-sleeping. Neither my fiance or me wanted to do it, but at the hospital it was like I had narcolepsy! I couldn't keep my eyes open and would invariably fall asleep breastfeeding. So when we came home, even though we had a bassinet, she was sleeping in the bed so I could bf. And then the weather turned cold, and we were worried she would be too cold in the bassinet. At the time, because we couldn't be intimate, it wasn't a big deal. But now that I've had my pp exam? We need to wean her back into her bassinet XD!
iheartruiner
01-16-2009, 12:47 PM
We coslept from 4w-9mo. I swore it was something I'd NEVER do. We weren't intimate at night anyhow, or hardly at all. But I really enjoy my sleep and don't regret it. ;)

We are only using cloth part time until we find what works. We use Nature Baby biodegradable sposies at night and outings...That's another reason for the playdates...to check out what other moms liked or what helped with PL.

For those of you interested in meeting...
Are any of you familiar with Doolittle park in Wallingford? Or there is another park in North haven off rt 5 near the cvs...I forgot the name of it...Would you want to make a meet n' greet at either on a warm day? Anybody know of any other good parks in ct?
I'd love to meet a few cloth diapering mamas...My friends and family think I'm nuts...They don't get the CD love....:giggle2:

im supposed to deliver at midstate waterbirth isnt allowed. they have showers. i want to bring a birthing pool with me but it isnt allowed. im going to stay at home in my 'pool' (or maybe just the tub, idk) until i am positive i have to go tothe hospital..basicly just to have the baby! i figure if i labor at home i wont get any pain meds. my ob is a jerk and told me to get the epidural immediately. that hurt my feelings, as if im a wimp! if i do end up with an epidural (if im there early enough) i wont feel bad about it....as long as i tried my hardest to go without.

That's way too far from me. I'm like, a 15 minute drive north of Yale, 7 minutes from St Rafe's. When I was in labor with DS, my water broke at 8:30am and I delivered him at 11:25am. ;) I'd never make it that far the next time. Waterbury is around 25 minutes from me.

I live on the Northford/north haven side of wallingford and I went to St. Mary's instead this time. My 2nd birth was only 2 1/2 long and I was willing to do the 25 minute drive to get the birth I wanted. I just left as soon as my water broke. We also had to drop off one of my DD. Your other kids can go with you too and witness the birth. My oldest came and she was the best! She rubbed my back and told me what a great job I was doing. I also switched from Midstate to Yale then to St Mary's....I had my perfect hypno/water birth...I say do it..and switch o.b's! I did at 36 wks and I don't regret it for a minute! I went to Naugatuck Valley obgyn. I had midwives but Dr. Albini's (ob) wife was the one I took hypno birthing classes with at Yale..She is awesome! her name is Shelley and she has a web page I think it's naturalmama.com....Just google hypnobirth in Ct and it should come up or her name Shelley Albini

Oh cool. I'll keep that in mind if we decide on when we're ttc :)
We only have my son right now, but we left the house when my water broke and the m/w on the phone wanted me to come in to make sure that's what it was (like it could have been anything else. LOL) so we stopped in and then they had called YNHH to get the room set and called my m/w. I was there at YMHH for about 20 minutes before I delivered. I had no time for anything but to do that. Next time my plans are MUCH different. LOL!

One more thing about Yale and Midstate...they automatically give you a shot of Pitocin after the baby is born to induce contractions, whether you need it or not..(I called specifically about this)...and they concider an I.V. protocal..St. Mary's does not.
Yale takes the baby away from you to the nursery to do vitals..You have no choice. (That was the reason I left there @ 36 wks or was it 34? I'll have to look back I only had 3 apts, then had him). Midstate does vitals in the room. I didn't want my baby to leave my arms. St. mary's birth center they even did some of the vitals while he was in my arms. They let the cord stop pulsing before they/husband cut (they even asked if we wanted the placenta?!?), they give you bonding time before they do vitals and apgar as long as baby is doing well. They let me hold D and nurse him for like 1 1/2 hrs after he was born before they did anything. It was such a great experience. We have talked about my hubby getting the big V but after such a peaceful and calm birth I'd love to have another! Ssshhhh don't ever tell him I said that.

Doolittle park is great for that reason...You can see everything from anywhere and there is only one way in or out....It's nice Just bring your sunscrean and sun hats on hots days...No shade from trees.

Any day but Tuesdays and Thursdays, because its a little bit of a haul for me.
We could meet at Central Parc in Waterbury. Its an indoor park, standing for Parent Attended Recreation Center. It's in a gym and is on Central Avenue, near downtown. We won't have to worry about how cold it is or anyone running away. Its basically a gym with a sandbox, slides, numerous toys, bikes, push toys, seesaws, a couple club houses, tumbling mats, books...almost anything you can think of, including a few tables to eat at and a microwave. They're open from 9am-2pm m-f. They ask for a $1.00 donation to come and play for the day.

That sounds great! My girls 4 1/2 and 7 have vacation in 2 wks I'd totally be up for that! Other wise I have only my 3 1/2 month old during the day. Are there baby swings there? The kind that are at regular parks. He'd love that.
Is it near the mall or St. Mary's? I don't know very much about Waterbury.

side note-
april, do you know is central parc still has that upper age limit? it really was a great place, but i was pretty annoyed that they wouldn't make exceptions for older siblings. since we homeschool, we had to stop going there after calla aged out at 5yrs.
it was a long time ago though (almost 4yrs!) so maybe things have changed?

The upper age limit has been lifted, but they have the right to tell you to remove an older unsafe, or disruptive child. Children 6+ are welcome depending on behavior. Brandon (8) and Dakota (11)both went recently. They prefer that older children not ride the tiny bikes because they're afraid of someone getting hurt when they wizz by...Basically, you're fine if you can keep them in control.
What would they say about a bunch of older children? I don't know, but when there's a date in mind, I'll call or go and ask. I know the staff pretty well and don't think they'd care, especially because they've been pretty empty recently.
There are no swings except for infant ones. I don't know why, but there's lots to do for young children. They also have craft materials and computers that my daughter uses when she gets bored walking around and playing with the little kids.

Hi! I'm very new to diaperswappers, but I wanted to stop by because I'm from CT too! I'm in the lovely (or not so much) town of Groton. I have a 6 year old girl, a 4 year old girl, and an 8 month old boy.

Hey CT mamas! May I butt in? :D I'm from VT, but we are planning to relocate shortly. We are vacationing in CT next month to scope out the state and look for towns we might like to move to. We are looking for rural-ish, family friendly small town near the coast with good schools, lots of activities for the kids (especially outdoor, nature stuff ;) ) but that has shopping nearby.
Any suggestions on where we should look? How about affordable places on the water to stay at while we are there next week?
Thanks mamas! Sorry for hijacking :bagoverhead:

hmm, if you want near the coast you might want to check out the norwich area. but im in the upper eastern corner of the state, and its nice and quiet here. its about a 30 min drive to the beach, but its well worth it. i live in a village type town, where we all know eachother. we have a great smaller scaled school, and an exceptional highschool in the next town over. woodstock area is right near us, which is loaded with gorgeous country homes, and great quaint shopping..
the house next door to me is for sale :giggle: its very colonial country looking :giggle: but its $250........

How near the coast do you want to be? It also depends on your price range. In our estimation, CT is more expensive than VT and the coast is generally going to be more expensive than inland.
We live in Lebanon, what you would call a rural town, though it is slowly getting away from it's agricultural roots. I'd say it's family friendly. We have a mile and a half long town green, with a walking trail, plus rails to trails locations in a couple of places in town. There are story time activities at the library and a couple of playgrounds, including a new handicap accesible one. In surronding towns, there are also other activities. It takes me 15-20min to get to Stop and Shop (two of them, in opposite directions), Walmart (again 2), a small mall, Aldi's and restaurants. A larger mall is about 30min away in Waterford and an even larger mall and shopping area is 40min away in Manchester. I've seen just about any store I can think of between those areas. We are also located near both casinos and a couple colleges (UConn, ECSU and Three Rivers). We are about 30-40min away from any good beaches on the coast, though.
It might be a good area to start looking in. You may find something, lol. I think the closer to NYC you get, the higher the prices, though it all depends on your personal price range. Good Luck! I hope you have a good time on vacation.

I've driven through Eastford. The only place I could think of to meet is UConn, by the barns. I used to go walking the hill and taking the kiddos to see the animals. Not like they don't get enough of that at our house, lol.
