View Full Version : Has anyone added buckles to their mei tai?

I have a mei tai that I love, but because my toddler is so squirmy I'd like to shorten the top straps and add buckles, kind of like on the beco carrier. Has anyone added buckles to their mei tai? How can I do this safely and make sure the carrier is still strong? Also, if I chicken out, are there any WAHM's that could do this for me and how much would you charge?

Thanks!

There is a DIY forum on TBW that has directions on how to make a MT into a BT. I can't sew, so I haven't attempted it. I have a BH someone altered and made a half buckle and I love it (bought on FSOT, so I don't know who did it). I am gonna watch this thread, too!

I think this is the tutorial that "Whippoorwill" was talking about.

Thanks so much for pointing it out! It is exactly what I was looking for and I'm going to try it out. Wish me luck! I'll post pics when it's done and let you know how it works.

I did it! Here are some pics of the mei tai that I converted to a buckle tai, using the tutorial from TBW. It was really easy, took 1 1/2 hours, and cost about $10 with webbing from Joanns and buckles from REI. I did change one tiny thing and that is I put the side buckles a little closer to the top right underneath the top straps. I had them where she said in the tutorial and they sat right on top of my daughters thighs. I thought they would rub her legs and get uncomfortable so I moved them up. (Much better). I also didn't add the bottom rucksack straps. They didn't seem necessary and the back carry works fine without them. If you have any questions about how I did it or the process, let me know!

This is the finished buckle tai.

I have a question Hudsonsk? Are you crossing the straps in the back carry? I can't tell from the picture. TIA!

Yes, I'm crossing. I tried it without crossing, like a backpack though and it worked that way too. I might have to shorten the fabric part of the straps though if I decide to always wear it that way. It's on it's tightest setting and is just a smidge loose. HTH!

Those turned out great! Who wants to do one for me if I get another MT :giggle:, I can't even sew on a button.

Hudsonk, I love that MT, what a pretty print!

slightly OT, but anybody do this kind of conversion to an ohmnibu? I am thinking of trying it if I can find buckles that will fit through the rings.

and ....I have an old snugli....I could steal parts....
Off to investigate that possibility.

Thanks for the link and pics. I was going to sell my first mei tai cause its made of really heavy denim and kinda hard to tie but now I think I will try and convert it to a buckle carrier!

I haven't done it, but I've seen the results somewhere in the DIY section of thebabywearer.com.

If you want to temp try it, (I'm assuming you are starting with a MT), you can tie a loop through each bottom strap: http://www.thebabywearer.com/forum/showthread.php?212021-Onbu-tied-Mei-Tai-%28Pic-Video-Heavy%29&highlight=onbu

If you do decide to convert with rings, SlingRings (http://www.slingrings.com) are widely considered to be the safest. Rings from the craft store usually aren't strong enough. Or scavenge the nylon rings from an old NoJo sling ... those often turn up at consignment shops or on FFS.
