where do you get your wool? I'm in the NW suburbs and would love to find a store closer than St. Paul.

Hey Mama! Nice to know there are other knitting Mamas in the area. I go to Amazing Threads in Maple Grove a lot, or All About Yarn in Coon Rapids. Are either of those places closer to you? There is also a Yarn Cafe in the Plymouth/Crystal area.

I mostly shop online, but if I want to browse I like the Yarn Cafe in Maple Grove, because I can meet friends for lunch (or coffee or wine).

My mom swears by Amazing Threads, also in Maple Grove.

The Minnesota Knitters' Guild has a nice directory of sources:

All About Yarn is very close to me (I'm in Coon Rapids) but they always treat me like crap so I don't go there often. I'll check out Amazing Threads. Thanks!

Wow - that stinks! They've only been nice when I've been there (only twice). Must be something about nice yarn taht makes people turn a little snooty fa-looty. :giggle: I don't love the owner of Amazing Threads but most of the other women there are really nice and helpful. They are having a sale on Feb. 29th - leap year sale. They'll be open 9-9 that day, you should check it out then if you can - when does YARN go on sale?! :lostit:

I've been there 3 times and they always look at me like I'm going to steal all of the yarn I can get my hands on. It makes me very sad actually.

I will definitely try to make the sale at Amazing Threads. Is it a stroller friends store? All About Yarn is pretty tough for me to get my double stroller through.

More stroller friendly than AAY but still not so much. There is a clearance section upstairs too, so that would be tough with a stroller. :giggle:

I have recently started going to Silver Creek Cabin in Buffalo. She definitely makes good use of her space; I have never seen so much yarn and supplies in one space! And its very cozy there as well. Im going to start taking sock classes there starting next Thursday.

Nope, I didn't make it. I'm gonna try to go up there today, though, just to see what they have.

Glad (or sad?) to hear I'm not the only one. I've gone in there a couple times and no one would help me! I stood there looking lost and no one even asked if I needed help. I've had better luck at Amazing Threads.

The first time I went was pretty soon after they opened and the owner that was there was ok. The last time I went was one of the other owners (I believe there are 4 owners) and she was AWFUL! Unfortunately that was the only place I had been that had the size of needles I needed so I had to give her my $16 otherwise I wouldn't have spent any money there.

Ok - so curiousity got the better of me and I went back. When I walked in the woman at the counter said Hello. I looked around a little bit then went and asked her for help. She dropped what she was doing and walked around with me looking for what I needed. Sadly, we didn't find it but I did have a nice experience there. :dunno:

anyway... I don't know why you didn't have a good experience. So sorry!

Oh...that must have been what I forgot....the shower! j/k

I'm glad they were nicer to you. Maybe I'll give them *one* more chance to be nicer to me :giggle: It's just so close to me that I want to give them my business ykwim?

Totally - hopefully they will be nicer to you! The lady I talked to had kinda big hair, blondish, if that helps you figure out if she's the one who was nice or mean to you :giggle: I love that we keep dragging this old thread up - I think its the first time I've had a long-lasting thread talk with someone. Thanks!

The one that was not so helpful was short and skinny with kinda short blonde hair. The one on the far right. I'm suck a dork. :lostit:

I think Amazing Threads has the best yarn selection in the NW suburbs. They really do a great job keeping up with the trends and always having something fresh. I used to love to go to Yarn Cafe, but their yarn selection is just pitiful. They even quit carrying malabrigo and galway so they could sell their private-label, made in china yarn. They also quit serving food. They have free coffee and cookies or drinks and snacks that you can buy. I'm not sure if they held onto their liquor license or not. It's still a nice place to knit, but I probably won't be buying much there anymore.

You're not a dork - I've never seen that woman there, just the big hair one and the one right next to her :giggle2: and they were both nice. :giggle2:

I have also enjoyed knitting at the yarn cafe but  I've never bought anything there or really looked to buy. It was more a social gathering to knit thing. (I'm sure they loved having us non-buying knitters there):giggle2: Since the yarn is packed in so tight I'd have thought it was a good selection, but that just shows what I know.

I went to Amazing Threads today iso the same thing I went to All About Yarn for and alas, I can't find a match. Oddly enough I found a Patons that matches well and SWS (soy/wool combo) too. - know anything about if that yarn works for soakers??

My mom talks about this place a lot--she likes it, too. At least I think it's this store; she just calls it the "yarn store in Buffalo"--I can't imagine there is more than one.:giggle: I should look into a sock class. I've got some beautiful JitterBug on needles but haven't gotten past the heel; the yarn's too nice to just sit there.

I like Coldwater Collaberative in Excelsior, too. Small, but nice selection and help.

I just visited Knit Wits in Chanhassen for the first time last week. Very, very helpful ladies, but selection was a lot of trendy, novelty type yarns.

I want to learn too. I made a scarf with a knit stitch, but never did anything else. Always seemed too intimidating.

Just in case you mamas didn't know.... Yarn Cafe in Maple Grove is closing and is liquidating everything.

I am looking for a group of gals to hang out with in the west metro. If you would like to get together and knit, talk CD's, or just chill....please PM me!!

Oooh, meeee! Im in the west metro (well just on the edge I guess) and would love to get together. Weekends work best for me, although right now we are pretty busy for the next couple.

I'll need to take a trip to the Yarn Cafe before they close. Any idea why they are shutting down?

I could probably talk DH into watching at least one of the boys on a weekend day. :)

Yarn Cafe discounts are at 50% off right now. They don't have much left...mostly their private label wool, novelty yarns, etc. I think their "Made in China" private label wool adventure had a lot to do with their closing. They were never on the ball with trends or popular yarns either. It was a great place to hang out and knit. I'm sad to see it go, but after the first year or so, I shopped for my yarn elsewhere.
