View Full Version : How long?

For those of you EC'ing grads, how long before your lo was diaper free? We started dd at 8 months and she is now 17 months and doing really well. She can now say "peepee" and "poo", but it's usually AFTER the fact  But if I see by her face that it's time to go, and I ask her "potty?", she'll start laughing and run to the bathroom. It's quite cute, actually. I know she's doing great and she'd probably be doing better if I wasn't so lazy half the time in getting her to the potty more often -just wondering what the average timeframe is for babies who started around this age?

For both my girls, there was a gradual progression from telling me AFTER the fact around the 13 month mark to telling me just AS they were starting to go by about 14-15 months to telling me BEFOREHAND by 16 months or so with enough time to get to the potty. EC is (at least in our experience) very much a "two steps forward one step back" kind of journey but both girls were pretty much miss-free by age 2. We didn't start late though, with dd#1 it was at 4 months and with dd#2 is was from birth.

A tip I found really helpful at the stage you're at is not asking her if she has to go potty (which always invites a "no" even if they have to) but just saying things like "Oh, you have to go pee -- let's go to the potty". Just keeping the communication matter of fact, like this is just what we do. I always suggested that my girls come and go potty when I went, if I thought it was likely they needed to go to.

HTH!

Thanks so much! Very helpful. I know I need to be better at just taking her (and communicating to her) more often. She gets about 98% of her poos on the potty, so it's just a matter of mommy doing her job ;)
