Ok, it has taken me months to finally decide on what I want our new baby to come home from the hospital in. We want to begin cding from the beginning, right in the hospital, so I don't want anything that is going to be covering the diaper such as pants, onesies, or those flimsy underpants they put with dresses. Not to mention that all the dresses I've come across just aren't fitting what I'm imagining our little girl to be dressed in for the first time! Well, today I decided on getting her a daygown. The problem is there are so many different styles to choose from! And most of them are SO expensive!! I thought maybe I'd be able to save a little money if I made one myself. This creates another problem. I can sew, but I've mostly just sewn easier things such as diaper covers, wipes, pads, etc. I haven't actually sewn clothing since I was in high school over 20 years ago!! So, needless to say I'm a little intimidated! My question is, do any of you have a somewhat easy to follow, but pretty pattern for a daygown? I would love for it to come with a matching bonnet...which also intimidates me! I just want her to actually look like a baby when she comes home and I want her to be comfortable.

you know i was actually wondering about a pattern or something for this too.

i learned how to make infant tees (by taking another apart for a pattern...) the kind that have the shoulder cap things so the neck opens wide enough for the head easily... and i just got some jersey knit stuff and was going to do it like a "sleep sack", basically a really long tee with a drawstring at the feet you could just draw closed...

my sewing machine hates this fabric, but i make it work... but i would much rather have a pattern/tutorial for something like this just to assist me, so i would also appreciate any suggestions anyone has as well:) i too havent been impressed with too many of the ones ive seen to buy. this is a baby girls first big day!

There are a lot of heirloom style patterns there including daygowns and infant basics. I LOVE that style and it would be so special to bring your little one home in one, especially made by you!

I don't know how it is where you live, but here in WA state, it's the law that the baby has to be checked in his/her carseat when s/he goes home. If it's the same way in your state, then you should probably pick an outfit that is carseat-compatible. Unless you are planning on walking home from the hospital with your baby...?

Yep, it's a requirement here, too. But, a daygown is most certainly carseat compatible. It does not close around baby's legs so there is plenty of room for the strap. I've been through this a few times so I am always mindful of what goes on baby so as to not interfere with carseat straps/buckles.
