Any mamas have any suggestions for this? He's been taking a bottle after each nursing for 1.5 weeks, and the past few days we've moved more towards only bottle/formula vs. supplementing only. The milk just squirts and sometimes pours out the side of his mouth when taking a bottle, he can wet a 6X6 wipe in one feeding with it under his chin. He's also often gassy.
He's using platex ventaire advanced and platex nursers with drop ins. Both are the slow flow wide mouth natural nipples.
Any reccomendations on which bottle to try?? I'd like to switch to something easier than the ventaire's anyway. I'm leaning towards Avent, or something similar (we don't heat formula in the bottle so no worries there)....
He takes a soothie pacifier if that matters.
Any advice is welcome!! Thanks!

Definately sounds like the flow is too much, I would look for something with a nipple that is slow flow and maybe close to same shape as his paci? Not sure what else to suggest momma. Hope you find something that will work better. Probably trial and error, buy one bottle first to make sure it works well for you then buy more so you don't waste a bunch of $. Good Luck!

Thank you mama! Now to find a slower flow one... the platex is suppose to be pretty slow flow (it is the nb slow flow size too). :goodvibes:

Good luck, maybe try the avent or anything with a silicone nipple, (the drop ins have some too i believe) I think you have to suck a little harder cus it is firmer than the latex so that might slow things down. Sorry I am not more help.

We had the same problem and tested about a zillion bottles before we just decided to use the soothie brand bottles. They come with a super slow nipple which should resolve the issue of too much coming out.

i agree-- had the SAME problem with my LO-- I bought the Soothie stage 1 nipples for long neck bottles from here-- but i think they discontinued em!:banghead:
and those were great! maybe try the wide neck soothies with the stage 1 nipples!

If you buy the 5 oz bottle they come with the stage 1 nipples. But, you do have to buy the wide neck ones.

I didn't like the playtex bottles! With my daughter... I used Dr Browns... Avent... and NUK. I let her decide what she liked and didn't. Honestly, I wouldn't really suggest Avent with the problems you are having. And I really wouldn't suggest soothie... my dd was breast fed and we tried soothie first and it made her sick because it didn't reduce the air enough and the shape was ackward for her. I would suggest Dr Browns or NUK both reduce the air a lot better than Avent... plus... I know my daughter didn't like the shape of the nipple on the avent much. Dr Browns takes a lot to get them clean because of all the pieces... but it's worth it for the air reduction... however... since the milk is pouring out of your lo mouth... I am going to say to try the NUK wide mouth bottles. My daughter LOVED them... it reduces air... and it is an easy shape for a baby who has been breast fed or is very small. Good luck!

Thanks mama. If ds doesn't do well with the soothie one I bought I'll try the Gerber Nuk. That's what a baby I babysat last year took.
I gave him the soothie bottle last feeding and he did much better than with the platex ones. He still had milk on his chin but no milk pouring/spilling out. He didn't mind it and he's been content all evening.
:goodvibes: YAY!
Thank you so much mamas.

2nd bottle and back to pouring out again. :banghead:
I think I'll try the gerber nuks next. Does it matter that he doesn't take nuk pacifiers?

we had the same prob with one of my twins. My dr said that it is normal since he did not have the rythm down as to how to suck and swallow. That there would be some time of adjustment and then he would get the hang of it. And he was right, a couple weeks later, Jakey figured it out and that boy sure has not missed one drop since! gl mama!

thestafs~ Ok now this makes A LOT of sense to me! I read your reply to dh and he said "huh, that could be why he never got nursing down right". TOTALLY! He latched on beautifully, but it's like he couldn't get it right to suck/nurse right to get enough etc. He was loosing weight etc. (NOT a supply issue either).
So this is really encouraging with the bottles... I bet you are right and he will get it down soon. Thank you sooo much! He's only been on bottles and gaining weight for about 1 1/2 almost 2 weeks.
I may try the gerber nuk still, but I think I'll stick with that or the soothie after that and see if he gets better at it.
What bottles did you end up using for your twin ds?
thanks!:goodvibes:

I ended up using first the nursettes that the hospital gives you so they are the little latex ones but then moved to the avent. We used those since I had them from prev kids and eventually the one (my boy twin) got the hang of it. But boy did we go through tons of bibs and face cloths and clothes!!! I hope that is what it could be though and it cant hurt to aks the dr. My dr said that he was just a sloppy/lazy sucker and would get the hang of it. he was not saying that meanly, just that is what was happening! HTH!

We use Advent bottles w/stage 1 nipple - now at 7.5 mos it's perfect (it was WAY too fast up until now). She also takes soothie pacifiers.

I was going to say it's probably the latch/learning to suck. dd still does this some at 4 weeks. if she is tired or something. you can try to move the nipple around a little to get a better latch too. (in or out, up or down, etc)

Thank you! You mamas are so helpful! After the last 4 were breastfed only (wouldn't take a bottle at all), I totally forget all the formula stuff from when my first ds took bottles/formula. :giggle:

Same issue here. We found success with Avent (though we are still on the slow slow flow nipples that only have one hole not two), and nuby nipples (I use them on my evenflo bottles, but they will fit any similar) in 0-6 month - slowest flow ever but not frustratingly slow. Would be cheaper than trying a million as you can just get a back of nuby nipples since they fit 90% of the standard bottles out there.
I like Avent but DS does get more air with them as well as gas. The nuby are my favorite now. If you want to try an Avent, lmk, I'd be happy to send you a new one FFS, we have a ton!

It doesn't really matter what kind of paci they use compared to bottle. My dd used soothie paci at first because that's what the hospital gave us... but she never did ok with the soothie bottles. Good luck

Has he been checked for tongue tie? I only say that because my niece who was bottle-fed did the exact same thing. I'm not sure how old she was when the dr discovered the tongue tie.

No I didn't even think of that, but I will FOR SURE have the Ped. check that, he goes in next week for a weight check and overall check up. Thank you!!!:goodvibes:

I know you already have a lot of posts, but wanted to ask a question. Is your LO distracted while he's feeding from a bottle? Seems like a silly question, but I know if my DD turns just a little bit when she's eating, the formula comes out the sides of her mouth (she's 5 months and using bottles since birth.. consistently upgrading the nipples to her age/ability... she's on stage 3 Avent nipples, the ones for 3 months+)
the8dunlaps
04-11-2008, 10:16 AM
No, he's not distracted... a lot of the time he's awake and just looks at me, he's so tiny he doesn't interact or look around much yet... sometimes he's half asleep.. etc.
He's still doing it most of the time, sometimes doing better but we figure he's just a lazy suck/weak suck... and will outgrow it. I'll ask the ped to check for tongue tied though next week.
I really appreciate all the advice/input, keep them coming.
