OK, perhaps a combo of my RF info question. My 5 year old hates the carseat, and often will remove his straps and get up while moving (he prefers to do this on the freeway). We have all kinds of sensory issues and behavioral what-evers but anyone have a suggestion for carseat bliss? Can a 45 pound kid ride backwards (maybe this would help him)? Do they have seats that he can't undo the belt by himself (He once unbuckled the LATCH system by wriggling his little arm behind his seat. I thought he was buckled, stopped fast and his whole seat flew into the 2nd row! He has NOT done this again, but still :) )?

look into Britax's special needs carseats. They may have one that would help. You could also google special needs carseat. I don't know of any that go to 45lbs rearfacing, but I think if there is a medical need that would require it (some sort of hypotonia maybe) then probably one exists. Don't know if it would help though. I use a regent for my 6.5yr old autistic son. But he doesn't undo the straps. He jsut can't safely sit in a booster.

No, no current US seats go past 35lbs rearfacing. The only seats that go higher then that have to be imported from scandanavia, and are massivly expensive and illegal unless you can get a doctors perscription and petition NHTSA in order to use them legally. Other then that, is there any way you can move him to the second row so you can keep a better eye on him?

If he's special needs and you have insurance, I would highly recommend contacting them and seeing what your options are. There are special needs seats, yes, but they are insanely expensive (hence, my suggestion to contact insurance).
Otherwise, I would recommend a Regent or Radian 80. Event he new Frontier would be a good choice. The Graco Nautilus is also an option. The Nautilus and Frontier will convert to a booster once the harness is outgrown (by size or weight... 65 pounds and 80 pounds respectively).
He's a strong (and agile) kid if he was able to undo the LATCH anchors! The Britax LATCH clips are different than most others and would be much more difficult to get undone. As well as the front buckle. They're required to meet a certain pressure measurement to go on the market.

I know my 5 1/2 yo DS can not undo the buckle or chest clip on his Nautilus. He's tried to help me get himself out of the seat in the past, and he just can't do it. He could in the Radian, and his Marathon.
There is a special harness system sold by EZ-on that may be an option for you also.
However, if he is unbuckling LATCH buckles, I don't know how well the vest would work, since he could just unbuckle the seatbelt.

:lostit: I ORDERED it!!! :lostit: Yes, my little man has been able to unbuckle his seatbelt since about 18 mos! He comes in real handy when you lock yourself out of places, too! :)
So yesterday - as soon as I was totally ON the FREEWAY - guess who unbuckles? By the time I pulled over and was in the back he had the latch undone and was trying to put his carseat in the back cargo area. Apparently he was done with it and was 'handling the situation.'
FYI - I don't have him in the 2nd row as he throws things (shoes, books, car door panels  ) when he gets mad, at least in that back row it has farther to go! Plus in the back he gets his own space not sitting next to someone else. I'm sure you all think we're crazy now, but we're working on it!
