That sounds like something my MIL would try to pull. I'm sure she still has DH's carseat. That is assuming that they used one for him, which I highly doubt.

Wow, I would sneak in the basement and throw it out. Can you imagine? It's amazing how uninformed some people (even my own parents) are about car seat safety.

Wow- car seats weren't used too much 30 years ago.
Ask her if she thinks there may have been safety improvements in the last 30 years!

Wow! That is scarry! I felt bad having to tell my mom that no, my 3-year old could not ride in a booster, and no, she could not install my 15 month-old's seat ff when we went to visit last time.

I would just kindly explain to her how carseats have different regulations now and can expire. Also say that people can have the seats yanked if they are expired or not installed right or even be given a ticket (DH said a mom driving on base was given a ticket for apoorly isntalled seat). Jus tmake it super dramatic LOL.

On a side note- at least she had a car seat 30 years ago. Didn't our parents just put us in the car and hope for the best? LOL

LMAO! That is scary and yet hilarious! I can not even imagine that she would think of that. Just be thankful she mentioned it and you are aware enough to notice:)

Show her this video of what happens to an expired car seat when it's in an accident.

This sounds just like my mother! She never gets rid of anything. When I was pregnant with Leela who is almost 5 mos. old, she dug out my 17yr olds car seat from when he was a baby for us to use. She was soooo proud of herself for hanging on to all his old baby stuff, and she was so upset when I refused it.

Speaking of storing things, my MIL gave me three huge boxes of my hubbys stuff. She kept EVERY.SINGLE.ITEM from infancy to college. I kid you not! I got all the new mom stuff and school newsletters. I was thinking, "umm, I'm marrying him, not stealing him forever!". Yeesh......:headscratch:

That's funny about the car seat. Bad, but funny.

wow my MIL is the SAME way.....except i know for a fact she didn't use a carseat with DH past a few months old so i don't have to worry about that....when i was pregnant with Emma she got out all of his old baby clothes "just in case" (we knew she was a girl!). I swear god's gift to me for putting up with my inlaws is my two baby girls!

Holy cow! The lack on knowledge people have about car seats is astounding!

I would buy her a carseat just for her car, have it installed properly and have her educated by a tech on how to properly use it!

I'd love to see the carseat. Is it one of those metal bar carseats? It would make a great conversation piece!

OMG!! I Soooooo feel for you!!! Don't *even* get me started my my inlaws & carseats... They get so upset about not taking our LOs out while driving if they're crying. Not too unusual for parents / inlaws, but now get this...

*Keep in mind, my FIL was an LAPD police officer for 25 years, so he KNOWS!!! They drove 4-1/2 hours to our house w/our neice who was 12 months old. She had a graco infant seat. They wanted to see her, so they turned it forward facing in the middle & pulled the shoulderbelts from each passenger side, wrapped them around the CARRY HANDLE a couple times, and buckled them. :thud: They were SO offended when I asked DH, who didn't see because I was the one trying to put her in the car when they were leaving, to install the seat right for them. They have always been anti-seatbelts & passed that onto DH's younger brothers as well. They *just* got her a regular seat 2 months ago when she was 18 months & a good 25-28 lb. And they think nothing of letting her ride anywhere w/o a carseat. Thank GOD they live 1200 miles away!!!

Okay. Sorry for my little rant. It just gets me so worked up about them dealing w/our LOs & safety...
