My 19.5 month old recently started doing something that makes a sound like nails on a chalkboard :hairpull:, she started grinding her teeth. She seems to do when she's tired. I do have an appointment next week to take her to a pediatric dentist (not specifically for the teeth grinding, just a check up) so I plan on mentioning it to the dentist then. I have no clue where she got this from, nobody I know grinds thier teeth.
I tell her to stop but well, talking to a toddler is like talking to a wall :banghead:. Anyone know how or if I can get her to stop this? I'm concerned on how this might affect her teeth!
TIA :)

my son did that too, i kept telling him to stop too & sometimes it helped, sometimes not. he did eventually quit doing it & once in a blue moon i hear him do it again (he's 4yo now & think he started when he was 17-19mo).
in our case it didn't affect his teeth at all. but if you grind your teeth, it makes interesting noises, i think for many kids it's a 'new' thing & they're just playing, but i know some kids do it as a tension release, so i guess it depends what your child is like overall.
good luck

We went through that phase too. I think it's normal. They have to grow out of it. If you are really getting frustrated, maybe your pediatrician can give you some suggestions? I would always just try to distract him when he started it. I felt like if I told him not to, that would fuel the fire...
