Has anyone had issues with their child walking late? She's 15mon and still isn't really interested. When she was born her hearing was tested and one ear didn't test right, which they said is a common occurance. I don't remember if it ever got retested. I was joking that she always had to be louder than her sisters to get noticed, but she isn't really trying to make sounds either, just scream or yell. Since we have a dd with speech issues, I want to make sure to get this dd help early. Our other dd we had to fight and fight for services, and she was over 3 before we got anywhere. We go to the doc on Wen. and I'm going to ask for a hearing test. Have any of you dealt with this before?

My daughter has sensory processing disorder/is in therapy..etc. She JUST started to walk at 19 months. Shes been a fulltime walker now for a month. I've also heard of parents of children who are "normal" having late walkers. My cousin didnt walk till 20 months..etc.

ps: Our daughter also has speech issues! Shes in early intervention here in the state of VA. Its been helping a load. She's using sign language. She also acts as if she doesnt "hear" but she clearly does. Have you had your childs hearing tested?

My middle DD didn't walk until 19 months, but at 5yo we learned she has a chromosome deletion. Once she did walk she has had no trouble with large motor skills.

We finally were able to convince to doc to give us a referal for her hearing. We go this month. We have tried teaching her sign language since she was an infant, but she only consistenly signs please. I'm hoping to get her speech evaluated too, because our other daughter had a few years of speech therapy. This dd had to have the surgery to un-tie her tounge, so they said she might need speech anyway. But she just finally started to walk within this last week, but she's not very coordinated yet....I will keep you guys posted...thank you for all of your help!

My friend's dd didn't start walking until 15 mos. She also, at 18 mos, isn't very verbal at all. She says a couple of words; the rest of her sounds are just that... sounds. They don't seem to be too worried; neither are the grandparents, who have had 6 other grandkids before the dd.
My dd didn't walk until she was almost 2; of course, she had had two hip surgeries, one ankle surgery, and neurosurgery for her spina bifida prior to her walking (not to mention many other surgeries unrelated to gross motor skills). She was evaluated for speech therapy when she was 2; she tested at a 12 month level. We knew she was behind, but we were still so excited about her walking that it really didn't matter. Within six months of her starting speech therapy, she was at an age-appropriate level. We don't know if it was timing or the actual therapy that caused her to become so verbal. Maybe after your dd has been walking for a while, she'll surprise you with a fast game of speech catch-up like our dd did.

Both my girls started crawling at 11 months, my oldest didn't walk until after she was 16 months and my youngest walked at 15 months. My oldest was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder - mainly for her proprioceptive sense - which would explain the late walking. But my youngest has no developmental issues - she was just happier being carried!

I don't know about the hearing, but as far as walking, I have 6 kids, and 15 months is the earliest any of them have walked. They are usually closer to 18-19 months. There doesn't seem to be a reason other than they are just not interested.

My DD is 21 months and just started walking more about a month ago. I signed her up for PT and saw a orthopedic pediatrician to rule out anything. Thankfully, she is ok.. just delayed on walking. I think she just preferred crawling. If you are concerned about hearing, I would contact you states early intervention and have a test done.

My 6 year old was like that when she was a toddler. She walked late around 15-16 mos and had sensory integration issues as well. Shes a perfectly normal extremely intelligent kindergartner now.
I'd suggest contacting your local Early On or your FIA office as they would be able to direct you to services for her. Oh and if you do have a hearing test done make sure they dont do it with those stupid toys that light up as well as make sounds. They did that with my dd and for the longest time we were unsure if she was reacting to the sounds or to the lights.

My girls didn't start walking until they were 15 months. I started when I was 9 months, so I was really worried. I have heard that until they are 18 months, it isn't a big deal. Personally I would be a little worried but I always freak out about development stuff.

BOY this sounds real familiar! My 1st ds did not walk until he was almost 18mnths. I was worried but one day he just got up and walked, then he ran after a few days of that. The pain was having to carry him for those extra few months and he was heavy! I wouldn't really worry about it too much unless your lo looks like they are having muscle tone issues or problems with the legs then you could have your lo diagnosed.
I have been through 4 hearing evals. and every one was different. The 1st one, I was told my son was partial deaf in one ear so I had him re-checked then it turned out he had perfect hearing! I was upset and just kept having different opinions from different docs. I finally had an ABR done and that was the real test. You could ask an ENT to do an ABR and that will be the TRUE answer to you lo hearing issues. A childs speech prob. is not always triggered by a hearing issue. That is what I thought and boy was I wrong. DS didn't talk till he was 3 and he has perfect hearing. GOOD LUCK momma!

Hi ladies, sorry I haven't let you all know what's going on, but we've been really busy with the docs and I've been kinda depressed about all this too. So, she does have hearing loss, we go back in a few weeks to retest and get hearing aides or talk about doing surgery. She is also on the waiting list for evals for physical therapy and speech therapy...sigh...I already went through this with my older daughter and it was so stressful, so I just am really sad to have to do it all again.

I don't know about the walking, but my youngest is deaf. You can do some simple "hearing tests" at home before you have a "real" one done. Speak softly on each side of her head, using her name, see if she responds. Does she startle to load noises, phones, vacuums, doorbell...My middle son didn't talk till he was 2 1/2 because he didn't want to he had his brother to do all the work for him. That could also be your problem, older siblings doing the work for her....just some thoughts...:hugs:

My oldest DS is 3 and we just had his hearing re-tested. Both of my biological parents are deaf (one from a birth defect- his mom had rubella while pregnant- and my Mom went deaf at 4.5) so we keep a real close eye on our kids' hearing. The ESD (Education Service District) provides free hearing tests for children.

I'm an infant/toddler teacher of the deaf--if you have any questions feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to give you some advice. I'm sorry you're dealing with all of this...my DD didn't walk until she was 18 months old exactly, btw. I doubt it has any connection with the hearing, however.
Did they do an ABR on her? What were the levels of hearing loss that they told you? What surgery were they talking about? Cochlear implant? Or ear tubes? Sorry if this is too many questions from a newbie--I've been lurking for a while and decided to become a bit more active. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you!!! Good luck...

My friend's son has a condition that may lead to hearing loss - he failed his first hearing test, but they found out later that it was because he had a double ear infection (duh). I have heard that children after drainage tubes are put in (in case of frequent ear infections) sometimes show a dramatic improvement in speech and hearing.

I too teach children with hearing loss. If you need any support or have questions, please let me know. I work with cochlear implant users and would love to help in any way. Good luck Mama!

My DS is 15mo and was diagnosed w/low tone at 12mo. At that point he wasn't crawling or even sitting up on his own. After 2mo of OT he is now crawling all over the place, pulling-up and cruising. I don't think he will be walking until 18mo. We're not worried at all - he's developing at his own pace and just needs a little extra help to get there:-)
