Hi everyone!
I am currently 30w3d into a rather complicated pregnancy (I have ANA and MTHFR), and have been collecting diapers since last summer when I found out I was pregnant the first time (miscarried that one). I'm trying to see how I'm doing in terms of my stash, so I'm hoping for some advice :). There's a chance that I could go early, but part of me thinks he might surprise us all and go to term (I'll be induced if I reach my due date due to high risk of stillbirth). Either way, I want to be prepared. Right now baby is measuring slightly on the larger size, but more due to his length than his girth. He also has big feet :D! So, here's my stash thus far:

Diapers that seem small and probably wont last all that long unless I go really early:
4 K0 fitteds
1 tiny fleece pocket
4 thirsties XS covers
1 bumpkins XS cover (seems more like a small)
2 XS WW AIOs
1 Very Baby AIO
2 XS FB pockets
2 XS Thirsties AIO pockets

Size small diapers that look like they'll fit for a while:
1 bumgenius 3.0 one size
5 S FB pockets
3 S Thirsties AIO pockets

Diapers that say small but seem huge:
3 Pocket change small pocket diapers

I also have tons of inserts for the pocket diapers, as well as 8 infant indian prefolds and a snappy. Oh, and 24 cheap flat style diapers from Target that I thought would make good doublers and burp rags :). DH complains that I have too many different types of diapers, but I didn’t want to get all one kind and then find out I don’t like them. At least this way I can adjust my stash as I figure out what works :D.

So, am I good? Just to start, at least? I intend to start using cloth as soon as the meconium goes away, as I'm told is rather difficult to get those stains out.

I'm also looking for advice on detergent. I hear Charlie's and Allen's are two good, inexpensive options. My biggest concern is build-up in the diapers due to our very hard, alkaline water. I don't think I can afford a water softener at the present (though my tropical fish tank would probably be all the better for it) so if anyone has some ideas on an additive I can use in the wash that won't harm the diapers I would be eternally grateful!

Thanks so much,
Mel

You will definitely need more dipes than that unless you want to wash everyday or more. A NB will use a bare minimum of 12 dipes a day. You could pick up some more prefolds if you want to keep cost down. From everything I have read lately it seems that meconium doesn't stain at all, just washes right out, so I wouldn't worry about that. Most NB's, even big ones, will need nb dipes for at least a few weeks. My last baby was 8-8 at birth and SM FB didn't fit until 6 weeks. As for detergent, I have never used special detergent. Lots of people love Tide and I am currently liking simplicity. HTH. GL keeping your little guy in until term.:goodvibes:

I really loved my kl 0's and kl small contours. They were all I used to about 13-14 lbs...they were so easy when I was so tired and never one blowout or clothing change because of one. I used the nb proraps w/ them which was a run-of-the-mill, but bulletproof combination. I didn't really mind washing often (every day and a half) and my entire nb stash consisted of 10 kl 0 fitteds and 12 small kl contours (I added a contour inside of the fitted for overnight with a small (not nb) cover for a beefed up diaper. I really resisted overbuying the nb dipes and am so glad I did, because they really don't last that long and now I find myself needing to buy lots more dipes and I'm glad I didn't overspend early so I can overspend and experiment now:giggle2:

I guess I should have mentioned that I do intend to wash every day. I can't stand the thought of letting the diapers sit for longer than that...it's just not for me!

Really? My nephew is 7 weeks old now and my gosh that meconium was like tar on his poor lil bum!

Thanks for the goodvibes! I'm staying off my feet and drinking tons of water like a good pregnant mama so hopefully I last to 38 weeks!

I have a friend who swore the meconium stained up all her pf's, but I've read other mamas who say it's not a problem at all? I used my g-diapers I got as a gift along w/the hospital sposie freebies until we had no more meconium to be on the safe side, too.

Oh wow this makes me realize I need to get more covers made. Dd's meconium did not stain the prefolds but I have heard that it depends on the baby/breastmilk. You could use those flushable rice paper liners, we did those for a while.

I purchased all our newborn/xs AND small diapers already. My son was 8# and grew quickly, so in case this babe does the same, I want to be prepared. You will need more small diapers for sure. I purchased about 12 small Fuzzi Bunz, some small BG AIOs, and about 10 random small fitteds. Plus I have 2 dozen prefolds - orange and green edge. These are always a good back up.

The BG OS pocket you have should last you through PLing, so if you want pick up some more of those. We have about 6 of those in our house, for my son now, and LOVE them. I plan on buying some more shortly.

Thanks for the suggestions! My favourites thus far of those I've purchased are the Thirsties and the BG. They're just so well made! I thought for sure I'd like the FB more. Of course this could all change once I actually have to use them <g>.

Do any of you use Allen's? If so, where do you buy it? I've been looking on line and it is rediculously expensive!

I don't know if you have a Whole Foods near you but if you do they carry several of the good diaper soaps just as cheap as online but no shipping. I started using Bac Out to treat stains and it is wonderful in combo with Charlies but I really like BioKleen's Laundry Liquid. It is made by the same company that makes the Bac Out. You might like to check it out.

I'll have to do that! I know there are at least two Whole Foods within an hour of my house...I just have to remember where!

I did end up buying some Allen's Naturally...should arrive in the mail tomorrow actually!

I started washing my diapers as well. Also pictued up an extra bumgenius on here but it hasn't come yet...hope the mail didn't eat it!
