DD was running while playing with her older sister and she tripped and smacked her head on the wall. I was literally a few feet away and grabbed her instantly and there was already a HUGE bruise and lump on her forehead where she hit. This lump is gigantic. I of course comforted her and checked her out. Then I gave her a little Tylenol for pain. Do I need to do anything else for her? Do I need to call the doctor? She isn't acting funny right now but it just happened a few minutes ago...I am just paranoid I guess...Poor baby!

I'm not a doctor, but based on a recent experience with my DS2, I would pay attention to her behavior and call the doctor if it changes. She may get sleepy. If she starts to vomit, also call the doctor.

Head injuries are worrisome :hugs:

I know when my son hit his head, I did call the doc, and they told me to watch for vomiting, and loss of consciousness. I also iced the bump, to help the bruising/swelling. They said it was okay to let him sleep, but just to check on him periodically, and call if there were any changes in his behavior. I think you can tell something by looking at their pupils too, but of course I can't remember exactly what it is you're looking for, lol...again, this is just my doctor's advice in our specific instance when I called.....just figured I'd share though....hope all is okay and her head feels better soon! :goodvibes:

DD bumped her head today (had her sitting up on the floor, so I could stand up, and she toppled and just caught her head on the edge of a wall I didn't think she was that close to). Cried for a few minutes... (she's 6 months old)
She spit up a lot and didn't seem that hungry for her bedtime bottle... should I be worried? (she hasn't been feeling well... has a bit of a cold... I had a bad cold last week, so that could be the spitting/throwing up)
Edit: no bruise or bumps

I have 4 children & I've dealt w/ this several times. Also dh is a nurse. Watch her for an hour or 2 for: dizziness, stumbling, vomiting, crossing of her eyes, & if her pupils dilate. If any of that happens call the doc. Also, your not supposed to let them sleep for an hour or so , if possible & no Tylenol etc. I was told all of this when I took my oldest to the ER for a Cyclops goose egg when she was 18 months.

What I have always always been told is that if the bump comes out then you are in GOOD GOOD circumstances. Your dd should be fine, ofcourse watch it though.

As for the previous poster, I would just watch and make sure it doesnt go in. If the bump goes in I think you are suppose to go to the ER asap. We have never had to do that, it always comes out or there is nothing. Two different doctors, my sister(nurse), and her husband(doctor) have all said that about the bump coming out then you are in good hands.

If you are still worried tomorrow I would call the doctor and see what they say. Good Luck!! Dont you just hate it when stuff like that happens:(

Oh that is very good to know - thank you! The bump is HUGE so I know it is definitely out!

To help with the swelling of a bump on the head my family has always used this trick. Cut a piece of potatoe and put the cut part on the bump. Don't know why but it helps take care of the swelling and therefore part of the ouch.

But still keep an eye on her.

It must be a bad day for falling. My ds fell today and hit his head right on my wheelchair's footrest. His eye was bleeding and he has a scratch on his nose and knot on his eyebrow. :( Luckily there wasn't any perm damage. They had to stain his eye and look with a black light to see if there were any scratches and the severity. He did scratch his cornea but it will heal on its own. It was horrible to see him in so much pain. On the way to the hospital he stopped crying and starting falling asleep and I was yelling for him to wake up. I'm sure there will be many more falls and injuries but its scary when it comes to their heads. I hope your little one is okay.

i've always been told to keep an eye for awhile...if she starts acting very tired then you should get concerned and have her checked out...so sorry that happened to her!

My mom is a trauma nurse and she always told us that if they cry immediately after the hit, don't worry. If they space out for a bit or, of course, if they lose consciousness, then call the doctor or take them to be seen. But if they cry right away you're ok.

My kid hit her forehead at the playground when she was two and, although her face was literally covered in blood, all she remembers is that the other adults were "scared of my blood" and now she has a Harry potter scar that she loves. After that, I think keeping cool is the most important thing even when we're actually freaking out inside. With all that blood, I thought her eye was poked out!

Those little heads were made to take bumps. Otherwise they wouldn't grow on such wobbly bodies, right?

Never heard the no tylenol but have heard no sleep for maybe an hour, just to make sure.

When my first child was 18 months, she fell at the McDonald's playground & in the time it took me to run up to her, she had the biggest goose egg I've ever seen right between her eyes. Of course being a new Mom, I panicked & took her to the ER. I thought her brains were oozing out or something! :giggle2: Anyway, the ER told me no Tylenol, because it could potentially mask a problem. However, after an hour or so (when you are in the clear) Tylenol is fine.
I've learned after 4 kids, those heads are pretty durable. Both my toddlers got bumps on their heads today too. It must be something in the water. :giggle:

Katesmash, your LO is probably fine. Most 6 month olds will tumble and bump their heads. They will often cry but not because it hurt but because it scared them, there will be plenty more to come. Keep an eye out, but you probably have nothing to worry about.

Huh, I've never heard that w/ a potato. :giggle: I'll have to try that next time. (I mean, b/c with a still newly-walking toddler... there WILL be a next time, lol).

DD has had probably 5 or 6 pretty significant head bumps in her life already. (Makes me feel like a bad mommy to type it out like that, lol.) They hurt and she cried but after like 2 minutes she was back to her normal self each time.

OP, how is your DD doing this morning?

DD is still sleeping - I just went and checked her again...her forehead and eye is all black and blue but the swelling went down some and I think she will be fine. She went to bed late so she is sleeping late today! :giggle:

Awww! Poor baby!

If she cried right away, didnt lose consiousness, isn't bleeding, and hasn't vomited, then she is probably fine!

((HUGS!))
