Has anyone ever tried hypnobabies for natural childbirth? If so, how did it work for you? Would you recommend it?

I am DOING hypnobabies.. I can tell you more soon! (please send labor vibes!) I can tell you that my pg has been wonderful! Very relaxed and I actually am excited about giving birth... even after my last (3 day induction). They do have a yahoo group that you could sit and listen in before you decide. I started late.. 30 weeks, although I do feel prepared... I wish I would have heard about and gotten it earlier. Hopefully my hypnobaby will come soon!!

Yes, absolutely worth it in my opinion. If you put the time into listening to the cd's and reading the material it will be a great tool for you.

See here for my recent experience with it.. a totally natural birth with some pitocin involved. http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=422423

It was worth every penny to me.

Definitely worth it!

I decided to try Hypnobirthing after DD1's birth. There was so much intervention with her birth that I felt like there had to be a better way. Hypnobirthing taught me everything I needed to know: how to handle arising situations with position changes, etc., how to manage the discomfort, and taught me to be at peace with everything and know that everything was happening as it should.

DD2's birth was incredible. I awoke at 3:00 am to pressure. It didn't occur to me a first that I was actually in labor. I just thought she was really low. I got up and walked around and then realized the "pressure" was coming at intervals. I sat up on my birthing ball for a while and would periodically time my contractions. There wasn't much of a pattern:6, 7, 8, 9 minutes apart, then back at 6. I decided it was too early to wake my DH so I just went about my business doing laundry and straightening up the house. By 6 am the surges were getting stronger, so I decided I'd go upstairs and take a shower. They still weren't uncomfortable, but I was one day past my EDD and figured this was definitely it. The shower was more a matter of me getting ready for the day and my subtle way to wake up DH. It worked. :D He came in as I was blow-drying my hair and putting on my makeup and asked why i was up so early on a Sat. morning. I simply told him "today is the day" as I calmy applied lipstick. He rolled his eyes, thinking "yeah right". We still laugh about that little exchange. While he was in the shower though, I had 2 surges and he realized that I wasn't kidding.

We had breakfast and piddled around the house. I called my mom to tell her today was the day, as she had to get my sister up to watch DD1. The whole morning I just walked around the house. When I had a surge I'd stop what I was doing and ride it out. Envisioning "the wave" really worked for me.

My Mom and my Aunt came out around 8 to get DD1. I was so calm and quiet during my surges, they didn't even realize I was having one until it was almost finished. At about 8:30 my Aunt left with DD1 and it's like my body instinctively knew she was taken care of and know I could have my baby. :D

The contractions were now about 4 minutes apart. My MW said she didn't want to see me at the hospital until they were about 3 minutes apart, so I decided to hang out for a while longer, even though the hospital was an hour away. I still had my doubts that I was as far along as I was. I was managing them just fine! So, I sent DH out to pick up one of my inhalers from the pharmacy for me. While he was gone, I had 3 surges that were 2.5 minutes apart. At Mom's urging, I called my MW who told me to go ahead and come in. Even she sounded doubtful that I was as far along as I was. I was having a conversation with her!

DH got home and we decided to head out. We had converted our Yukon in to a mobile birth center of sorts: pillows, blankets, towels (just in case of water breakage), my snoogle, and my birth ball. I LOVED my birth ball. DH popped in one of the CD's (believe it or not the car ride was the only time I listened to them during my labor) and Mom sat in the back with me while I labored over my ball, and applied counter pressure to my back. Finally, labor was getting more uncomfortable and I was really having to breathe through the surges and having to meditate.

We arrived at the hospital at 10:10 am. I was feeling more uncomfortable. They placed me in a bed so they could monitor the baby. I lost my focus here. I hated being in the bed. Finally after 20 minutes they let me get up and get in the tub. A nurse checked me a determined I was 8/9 cm dilated and completely effaced. My next surge, my body instinctively started to push. The nurse asked me "are you pushing?" and I said "I think so". LOL! My MW arrived at the time and they coaxed me out of the tub. I did not want to get back in the bed and really began to lose my focus. Self-doubt started to set in. With DD1 I pushed for an hour. I figured I still had a long road a head of me. I could not comprehend that when my MW said "your're there-you're doing it" that she really meant it. She had me lay on my side in the bed. I remember I was pleading to DH that I couldn't do it. He was a great coach and assured me I was, and that I was doing a great job at that. My MW checked me (even though I had been checked just 5 minutes ago) and determined I was complete. My water hadn't broken yet so she went ahead and ruptured them for me. I pushed once and delivered her head, pushed again and delivered her completely. It was a beautiful baby girl!

My L&D was amazing. No tearing or anything. Even DD was as cool as a cucumber. Alert and looking around. She didn't even cry at first. I was at the hospital for only 40 minutes. All the nurses and the MW were so impressed and said I didn't even need them. Mt MW said it would be a long time before she had another birth like that again. i felt awesome, like I could take on the world. It was an incredible experience that I would do again in a heartbeat. :D

Thank you so much for your replies! I'm 23 weeks now and am just starting the classes next week. I've always been somewhat of a control freak and am hoping this will help me truly relax and let my body do its thing. This will be my third birth (but other 2 were with epidurals due to my intense fear of pain)--Thanks again for the feedback. And best wishes to the mama expecting her 3rd boy any day now!

Lizard.. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your story.. I have been having waves since Sat.. lil ones (not all that strong) but they didn't give up.. I woke up about an hour ago and well, they kinda shocked me with how strong they are.. I jumped in the tub to gain focus.. had to meditate a lil and really do some visualization for the first couple but am on top of them now.. welcoming everyone! and although I didn't time them.. I had 15 within that hour. I decided to move here to the counter.. (and for some reason none of the online ones are working for me.. guess it is time to try and figure out DHs PAD one.. sigh) I am GBS + and this is my third LO.. first one was 5 hours (drug free), 2nd an hour and half (with PIT and epi) so although I would LOVE to birth at home as long as I can.. that isn't in the plans for me. I just started timing them but reading your story this morning and just feeling, today is the day.. is REALLY what I needed!!! After being induced twice, 1st one she broke my water.. I was beginning to think my body couldn't start on my own.. Hypnobabies has helped me relax and realize that I CAN!!! Tomorrow is my EDD! Send me birthing vibes as I think today is the day!!! Thank you again.. I really needed a "I can do it"! story this morning!!

lol.. yeppers.. that it was! Got to the hospital at 8:30 and he was born at 9:38am! My birthing went just as I had planned.. although I wish I would have gotten there a lil earlier to have my dose for my beta strep but hey.. wouldn't have had it any other way!! I can say I truly LOVE hypnobabies now! :)
Heather... if you call the number, you can get a used course.. it cost me like $85 plus shipping and they do buy it back for about the same price minus shipping.

Off to listen to one now.:goodvibes:

I have had 2 HypnoBabies births. With my DD (first) I had a hospital birth with Pitocin and was able to have a wonderful birth with no drugs using HypnoBabies. DS was born almost 4 weeks ago and I had an AMAZING birth with him at a Birth Center using HypnoBabies. I wouldn't have done it any other way. The midwives were so impressed with my birth at the Birth Center that they comment about it when I go in. It was so calm, peaceful and quiet. I wish all mamas could experience such a birth!

I've said it before, I'll say it again... hypnosis for childbirth is a fantastic skill, just please don't plan to use it as a *method*. You need a full toolbox, not just this one tool. If you have a smooth birth, it will be fantastic, but certain birth circumstances require other things (and I don't necessarily mean medical intervention - in fact I firmly believe some of these other "tools" can spare you from medical intervention).

I say this both as a doula and as someone who has birthed with hypnosis and funky labors.

If anybody wants my two birth stories - one using hypnobirthing as a method, the other using it as a skill among many others - feel free to pm.

:) Megan

No time to post story now but I had an AWESOME natural HypnoBabies birth with dd2, will use it again for ALL for my babies, and I lent it to a girl at work and she had an awesome natural birth too (calls herself a HypnoBabies poster child :giggle: )

I used HypnoBirthing with DDs birth just over a week ago and it was *wonderful*. I was able to get through all but the last 10 minutes without any pain, lots and lots of pressure but no pain at all. I was very happy with it and it was WELL worth the 12.95 I spent on the book and the CD (though I never actually listened to the CD). My midwife and labor nurse didn't know what to do with me, they were there the whole time to help with labor support and said they didn't know what to do to help...I was 100% fine between contractions, talking etc etc and during contractions I would just close my eyes and breathe and totally relax...worked out great!

hmm...I was just thinking about this for our next one (still trying) because I want to have a vbac and I want to go without the epi this time...I made it to 7 before I got my epi and have the theory that my labor and delivery went so very wrong because of the epi and not being able to move around...long story though...so maybe I'll try this. I have a hard time forcing myself to relax...but it sounds like it's worth a try.

I'm busy practicing this method and have 9 weeks to go. I first used it in a warm tub and my DH thought I had stopped breathing or died I was so relaxed! Poor guy!

Anyway, I spent 90 min. there and it seemed like a couple of minutes so I believe this will work for our waterbirth at home! I am so excited!

I havent' read all the responses, so maybe someone has already answered this. Has anyone done hypnobirthing and hypnobabies? What are some of the main differences? Which did you prefer and why?

Hypnobabies is SOOOO great!! I used it for dd#1 and it was better than I'd hoped for! I am currently 27 weeks and just started practicing for #2! I'm actually EXCITED to give birth again!

As long as you invest some time in listening to the cds and practicing, it will be a wonderful tool for you and really help you to relax. I would also highly recommend a doula for natural childbirth.

so here's my question on this---should i take a course with an instructor? or get the materials and do a home study deal? the course is $400, for all the materials, 5 classes of 2-2.5 hrs each. im leaning toward that since i know i can get dh to go with me, but it might be difficult to do this at home without a guide. but it sounds like you all did a home study? has anyone taken the course with an instructor?

I am starting private classes next week. I get 4 classes....each 2.5 hours long, the book & cds. All for $325 and in our home. I'm so excited to start these. By the time I finish the last class I'll be 36 weeks. I can't wait to get started.

I'm doing the homestudy course now, I didn't have an option for the instructor since there wasn't one around here. I'm excited about using it, I've read some great hypnobabies birth stories! I have heard too that the more you practice the more beneficial it will be.
