Lately, I have been having a really hard time sleeping. I will stay up until 3 or 4 in the morning and then have to wake up with dd in the morning. I really am not that tired during the day, but I know that so little sleep isn't healthy. I've cut out caffeine, which doesn't appear to be helping.
Does anyone have any suggestions for natural/herbal remedies? I'd really prefer not to take prescription sleeping pills or anything like that, but would totally be willing to try something herbal.

I know chamomile is supposed to help you sleep, warm milk, eggs, turkey...None of that works for me though. Post-baby insomnia kills! I won't take meds either because of breastfeeding and the fact that I probably wont wake up if one of my girls do...meds hit me hard. I wish there was more I could help you with. I'll be watching your post for other ideas!

Valerian is an herbal relaxant. I use magnesium. I take a few capsules before bed and it really helps me relax. Start out slow, it loosens things up , if you know what I mean!

Valerian root hands down! I use it up to 2 times per week with no side effects and helps me fall asleep. Doesn't MAKE me fall asleep like synthetic medications so with the side-effect of being drugged and groggy in the morning. :)
Valerian also is great as a relaxer during the day for anxiety AND helps to relax muscles on your first day of AF for cramping too ;)

Kava kava is a great natural sleep aid. It is also used to treat depression. From everything I have read, it doesn't affect your supply if bfing, for anyone interested. :)
DH takes Kava kava to help him sleep- he has restless leg syndrome - and its been working great for him. You can buy pills or make tea.

The smell of Lavender is supposed to help - put it on your pillow.

I use melatonin too, as does my son and nephew. It doesn't knock you out because your brain produces melatonin naturally and when you can't wind down at night, your brain isn't producing enough to relax you so you can fall asleep. Taking the supplement only relaxes you so you can fall asleep, we love it.

Valerian can be found in some grocery stores and in all health food stores :)
I also use valerian when I am nervous, anxious and when AF shows up packing a cramping punch as it helps to relax my muscles ;)

Just a reminder...
just because something is herbal or all natural doesn't mean it's safe. Supplements aren't regulated by the FDA so there's no control over them. For example, I've recently read several articles about how unsafe and dangerous Kava Kava is. It can cause liver problems, I think. So I would be very careful and talk to a dr. before taking anything like that.
I used to have really bad insommia too. Things that work best for me are a warm bubble bath before bed and reading until I'm relaxed enough to sleep. Also, lavender on your pillow or forehead can help. Stay away from the computer or t.v. though they are too stimulating before bed!
