It was a warrior birth!
We went to the movies Sat night to see "Narnia"- wanted a date since baby was due any day...got there and had to get a refund because the BH ctx were getting so strong...we picked dd up from my mom's & went home. I got every last thing ready because I knew this was happening soon.
Had ctx all night, from 10 pm til 4 am- called mw at 1, then my mom to come, but the pains got irreg, then none for an hr, then strong for an hr, then went away completely at 4 so I went to sleep. I wasn't sure anymore if this was labor & felt frustrated. Woke up at 5:45 am Sun thinking, "What was that all about last night???" But by 6:15 I was in the shower, moaning, ctx every 4-5 min...mw said come to the hospital but I thought it was too soon. DH insisted & we left by 7.
The pains were fierce and I got discouraged by how "slow" I was going- stuck at 8 cm and roaring through each ctx, vocalizing long and loud, even hit the nurse- then sobbed my apologies- labor takes away every inhibition. In the beginning it helped to use 'horse lips' like Ina Garten says, and to say my mantra, 'babybabybaby', and also to hold baby's little sweater that I'd made him.
But after awhile nothing external helped, it all came from inside I labored in the tub, then on the birthing ball, on the toilet (facing the wall- thanks for the suggestion Clothdiapermeplease! it helped) but nothing helped after a while- started to wonder can I do this again? but realized that that very thought meant I was almost done. I was also thinking that I had never worked so hard for anything in my life, not even dd. Came through transition on the toilet, felt the urge to push- mw checked me on the bed to be sure I was fully dilated...when she said yes, I immediately started pushing and had him out in two pushes! DH says he wishes he got the look and the sound of my pushing on camera- I roared like a warrior with every push! The energy just came and it felt so good to push. I had wanted another tub birth but there was meconium in the water, so no chance.
Asher came out with his cord around his neck (hence the meconium, a stress signal), the mw felt it before his body came out- it was so tight she had to snip it in 2 places. But he was absolutely fine & is absolutely scrumptious, nursed well from the 1st moment and is loving his cds!
