Our little Emmett James arrived on May 18 and weighed in at 7lbs, 9 oz, and 20 inches. Emmett, Mama, Daddy and big brother Liam are all doing well. I'm happy to say I was able to do it with no pain meds this time!

I'm not big on posting family pics online - sorry - but I swear he's cute! ... And he loves his fluff - which he has been wearing since the start!

So, details - once again my water broke first, before contractions started - it was at about 5 am on Sunday, May 18th - the day before the EDD. At least I had a bit of good sleep under my belt by then. Contractions weren't regular yet, so dh and I went ahead and showered, did some laundry, finished packing our hospital bags, etc. Grandma arrived to stay with Liam. We headed to the hospital at about 7 am since I was supposed to go in to start a penicillin IV due to group B strep. After getting admitted, and checked (3-4 cm and 70% effaced, -2 station at that point), dh and I put the stuff into our birthing room and walked the halls for the next few hours. Contractions would get a little closer together if I was walking, but when I would stop to be checked on the external monitor they would slow down again. They weren't even painful yet at that point. I knew eventually they would want to start the pitocin due to the time since my water had broken, so after they "allowed" me to have a light lunch (as I was starving!), I decided to just start the Pit since contractions were still so mild, irregular and anywhere from 4-10 minutes apart. I was ready to "get the show on the road. " The pit was started at 2 pm. By 3pm I was wanting to sit on my big ball (sooo glad I brought it!), and dh and I were playing rummy in between contractions. I did some other positions, too - like standing leaning on the bed, but I liked the ball the best. By 5:00 contractions were getting much stronger. I was starting to need to moan during them, and have dh press on my back, which really helped. I no longer wanted to play cards, and just relaxed, still on the ball, but slumped on the bed, between them. I would tend to get about 3 contractions in a row, pretty much one on top of the other, but then a good little break before the next set would come on. At about 5:45, I was still on the ball and starting to feel pushy. I had also been dry-heaving a little between contractions, so I thought I was in transition then. They had me hop up on the bed, I laid on my side, and the Dr. came in to check me. He checked during the next contraction, which was horrible because he said I was at 7 cm, fully effaced, and at +1 station. I was so mad at hearing this I screamed, as I was positive I had gone through transition already. THEN - with the very next contraction, the baby's head was crowning! So, I was right! The Dr. ran back in, and he was born 11 minutes after I was told I was at 7 cm!

Dh announced that it was a boy, and I kept saying "it's Emmett! It's Emmett!" I was so pleased - I can now safely admit that I was hoping for another boy :) They put him right on my belly and we waited until the cord had stopped pulsating before clamping it. I had just a small tear, probably because he came through so fast - only 2 stitches, though. After they weighed him quickly, he came back to me and nursed great right away, for about 45 minutes. He was so very alert. We waited until he was done nursing to do the eye goop and vit K shot. We called dh's Mom, who was watching Liam, and she brought him to visit by about 7:30 or so. He was really unsure at first, I think he didn't like the sight of the Pit IV which was still in my hand. He just snuggled with Daddy for a while, but gradually warmed up and after a while was sitting up with me on the bed.

We were able to do an early discharge from the hospital and went home around 9:00 Monday night, about 27 hours after Emmett was born. I really was glad to be able to sleep in our own bed!

Congrats! Must have been so nice to get home early.

Sure was! We co-sleep, so I just wanted to be back in bed and all together again! One night apart was enough! (Well, Emmett slept with me in my hospital bed, but not DH or older DS!)

And thanks to all for the congrats :)

Hey... we named our son Emmett also... He was born at home in the water in the morning of April 11, 2008. How did you find the name? I don't remember where we came up with it but the more we talked about it the more we liked it. Anyway it is weird to see another baby with the same name. I'd love to share some pictures and stories. Take care and congrats... Julie:goodvibes:
