Hey,
I just thought I'd start a new La thread since the other one has gotten so long and isn't visited very often anymore. Maybe a change will stir up something in the pot. How yall doing? It's getting hot out there!

Yes! It is very hot and humid!! Gotta love that feeling when you get out of the shower you still feel sticky :) So what kind of diaps does everyone use? I am using prefolds at home and haute pockets when we go places. I also have a few other os pockets.

Ugh... the heat. I feel so bad because I haven't been letting the kids go outside because it's so hot and we haven't gotten up early enough to turn them outside for a while until this morning. I'm in the market for new diapers since my baby is growing out of the mediums and the larges I have need new elastic. I ordered some snappis so I'm going to try those out with some pfs I have and see how I like it vs pins. I love the Precious Coverings AI2's that I have, but their custom ordering form is mad complicated and I got mine second hand. I just ordered some PUL, FOE and Hemp french terry and I'm going to see how it works with a pattern I've used for fitteds.

Very hot here!

To reply to the other thread, about the CD store - yes, it's Bosom Babies. They've moved to a new location. It's on Hwy. 190, just north of Harrison. It's a new little shopping strip, and Bosom Babies is around the back. From the road, you'll see Albasha & maybe a store called My Sofa Place (or something like that). It's in the same building as those 2 places. Her selection isn't huge right now, but I think if people start going there to buy CD's, maybe she'll offer other brands. When I went in a few weeks ago, she had FB & HH and was expecting some BG products as well.

We use mainly pfs with wool or fleece covers. Our BSWW and other PUL dipes caused a horrible yeast infection that I'm still trying to fight. So we switched to wool and fleece covers and LOVE them! They are so breathable!! We do use fitteds to catch that bf poop that runs out of pfs though. So I have several from Nana's Bottoms, a Mutt and GM I got lucky with on FSOT and I got some of those Limited Ed. BG egyptian cotton fitteds that are so trim and slim. Love those! I need to order more. But mostly, I just grab the pfs.

I'm jealous some of you have a store near you that sells cds! That is wonderful! Nothing like that around here. Booo.

We usually use pockets, but with the weather he's been getting real red so I've been using a lot of pockets with no cover or fleece/wool soakers.

Hi all. North La here. I don't have diapers anymore.. but when dd was wearing diapers i used mainly pockets then just a few weeks before she potty learned (on her own, i fought her hard about it. :giggle2: ) i got into prefolds and wool. i think just the feeling wet in the prefolds is what made her want to use the potty. she just quit wetting her diapers and would hold it until i took her diaper off.
guess it's time for another baby, so much new diaper stuff is coming out. I've really been tempted to just buy to pet and look at them.

Where in N La are you? Not many of us up here. I'm in Alexandria. What age did your dd potty train? I've heard it happens earlier with cloth babies. But I didn't cd with dd#1. Hope you get your wish about darling #2! We have a 6mo old now too and I love having both of them!

Hi Betsy! It's nice to see another Mandeville mama here - so glad I'm not the only one! :giggle:

Looks like there are a few of us on the northshore - we should all have a playdate & show off our babies' fluffy bums.

If anyone goes to Bosom Babies, let me know if she's carrying any other dipes now. I need to go in there again, but with it being summer, I'm not thrilled about taking all 3 kiddos in there! :lostit:

How old is she? I've heard cds make it easier too, but I didn't cd my oldest dd so I can't compare. She will be 3 next month and is fully trained finally! I also didn't want 2 in diapers so I ptd her before baby came last Dec. Good luck to you!

She's almost 28 months. She has absolutely no interest in the potty. Someone said she'd get tired of sitting in a wet diaper. Fat chance! She'd walk around in a saggy, wet prefold all day if I let her!

She's stubborn...just like her momma! LOL!

She'll get to it in her own time. They say if you push them it takes even longer to train and after our experience with dd#1 I believe it. Things might have happened easier and possibly sooner if we'd waited or just let her be.

Anyone near New Iberia, LA? I have one friend who CD'ers. She moved here from Belle Chase after the hurricanes but that's it. People see the baby in cloth and look at me like I'm CRAZY. My sister lives in Hammond. Next time I go to see her I think I'll make a trip to Mandiville to check out the baby shop. Looking forward to your replies:lostit:

e3 isn't due until 1/24 (or 1/25), so I should get a nice break. No diapers today except for the night diaper! I was not looking forward to two in diapers again.

Oh, and we're not finding out what we're having. We found out with both of the other kids, but decided that since this is the last, we should let it be a surprise!

Would love to do cloth full time, but daycare won't let us. :banghead: *sigh* It sure IS hot, and of course all my little one wants to do is play outside.:giggle:

That is too cute! Lots of mamas around here would like that one!! My dh is a North Carolina State grad so I'm in the process of ordering a custom NCSU dipe for him from Arabesque Baby. It is going to be lined in light blue for their rival UNC Chapel Hill! He thinks that is just great! I ordered him an NCSU dipe for fathers day on ebay and they were HORRIBLE! Lady could make a dipe to save her life! Lined it with "flannel"....uh try felt! Yeah, seriously. So AB is going to fix it. Her dipes are GORGEOUS!!

We're in Alex. Looks like this is going to be a bad one. Supposed to be a Cat 2 when it hits here. We're preparing food right now and getting ready. Let's pray NO is still there when it's over. Doesn't look good. They are on the bad side of it this time. Actually, most of us are! Take care mamas! Check in here when it is over to update how you made it through. And no we aren't buying sposies. I considered it but we can wash with a generator dh got from his work. So we'll be ok.

I'm Jennifer from Sulphur (10 miles from Lake Charles). I see that no one has posted since Gustav, and I am assuming that many of you don't have electricity? We didn't loose power here. But now Ike is making its way to the Gulf, so I am sure all eyes will be on him. I did buy sposies to evacuate, I always do.

Just a cute quote from one of my children:
When asking my 5 yr. old what the seasons were, he responded, "summer, winter, fall, and hurricane. :giggle:

I just got home yesterday. Actually, we came home last Wednesday, were ridiculously hot with no electricity, and the kids & I left again the next day. :) The power's back on now, though it was out all day today for some reason. We had no damage to the house we're renting, and minimal damage to our old house in Belle Chasse, which we're trying to sell.

Looks like Ike might spare us. Fingers crossed!

We made it fine here in Alexandria though a lot of people were flooded after the storm. Most lost electricity and/or water for 4-5 days. We got our water and electricity working again by late Thursday. Hope all you south LA mamas are ok. Looks like Ike might clear us, but I haven't check him out this morning. Cross your fingers.

Hello Northshore moms! I'm in Covington but I'm from the Hammond area. We use gdiapers (I'm the one that Karen at Bosom Babies would tell you to call with g questions) at night but my DD was EC'd since 5 months so we don't need them during the day. Hi La Mamas. I said hi in the other LA thread but wanted to say hi here too. I joined DS to get my stash for my 3rd LO due in June. I can't wait to start using my cds. I used sposies for my first two.

I live across the river from New Orleans.

So excited now! We just got our 41lbs of live crawfish! We are going to have an great boil today! My husband is kind of nervous becuase he has never had crawfish before, but I remember it like it was yesterday! (I grew up in Baton Rouge and moved to Nebraska in my teens).

Lucky you, they are hard to find right now. We did a big fish fry yesterday, yummy. When DH went to get the fish around 10am they had been sold out of crawfish for almost 2 hours. But Good Friday is a big seafood day, so it wasn't too surprising. We'll probably do a crawfish boil next weekend or so. DS will be 5 soon and I told him he is now old enough to peel his own crawfish. He is actually pretty good, just needs help getting started sometimes.

We moved to Missouri 4 months ago and last week dh was in La with a neighbor who he has befriended. This neighbor has a plane and was flying to Mississippi to deliver a dog for Paws (kind of like Angel Flight). So dh went with him and stopped off in Lake Providence. He brought back a sack of crawfish and we had a boil for the neighbors!! It was so fun! Most of them had never seen such a thing! They kept calling it "cooking" or "shrimp" or something else bizarre! They loved it. Dh is driving back to La this coming weekend and plans on bringing back 2 sacks to boil again. :lostit: I can't wait!! I miss Louisiana!

So we just moved to the grand state of Louisiana at the beginning of last month. Honestly, I was surprised to see all the greenery. Literally, took my breath away. I had visions of swamps and alligators crossing the lanes of the highway :giggle: . The summer heat&&humidity haven't kicked in yet, so I know I'm still in for a shocker - but I find myself loving it here and the slower pace of life. Still haven't tried crawfish yet, I think I may wait a little bit before diving into that world!

I was born and raised in La so the cold weather here is a shocker for me!! It is FINALLY starting to warm up during the day here but gets chilly at night. I miss those sultry southern nights. hi ya'll... My first post on this site...
I have lived in new orleans since feb. 08, I grew up here, but moved away after high school (03) and I was gone for a little over four years. I have a 2.5 year old daughter, and a little one on the way (July...) I was wondering about cloth diapering stores... I lived in st. louis last, and i adored cotton babies, but i know I can't be that lucky again... I know that there is an AP meetup group here, and my midwife is helping me get used to the community now, it is just that I moved away as a young thing just out of school and came back as a mother in my mid 20's, and I don't really know where I fit in.

He won't take me back because he said he doesn't want to help support them in being elitist. I don't drive, and live on the south shore, so I guess i am stuck with the internet... i would love to see a local cd mama do well in her business, and i might e-mail you, but i will be about 37 weeks pregnant then, and I have already had some issues with preterm labor and I don't know if I will be able to get around much... Boys are fun too. With my first (5 yo boy) we didn't find out what we were having until he was born. I too thought I'd have no idea what to do with a boy but I learned. No. 2 is a girl and I've really enjoyed having one of each. Now with another boy, I think my house will be wild, but it should be fun too.

I like the Kushies AIO and she does not carry them. She has BG and BG organic, Fuzzibuns, HH, GDiapers. I can't remember what else. Hope it helps some. She is kind of expensive last time I was in there. Probably because she is the only place around here that sells diapers.

Hi Betsy! It's nice to see another Mandeville mama here - so glad I'm not the only one! :giggle:

Looks like there are a few of us on the northshore - we should all have a playdate & show off our babies' fluffy bums.

Hi new here from Prairieville. I'm also new to cloth diapering. I have a 19 month old that I just started to get practice for my new one due in January. I'm already loving it, but need to get a stash going. I only bought a starter set from the only store in Baton Rouge that carries cloth (that I could find) I'm not up on the "terminology" but as far as I know I'm using prefolds w/ a cover. The brand is MIO something European. I am looking into Thirsties w/ prefolds for the new baby and will also try BG's or Fuzzibuns too and see which I prefer. I think I like doing prefolds, but am bidding on a lot of fitteds on Ebay to see if I like those better. I'm excited about cloth diapering already and wish I had the money to just buy everything I see right away. Seems a bit addictive, plus I love how cute he looks w/ his fluffy bum.

Bosom Babies.... yes, Karen (owner) is great! I was just there shopping/visiting with her a couple of days ago. Prices there vary. Her boutique clothes are high, and she had Mobys for $60, but then her prices on BumGenius and BG wetbags were comparable, so ::shrug::.

Hi Nicole and Creole mom!

I have been researching and just trying to figure out the newborn stage so far. I get so overhwhelmed trying to research it all! I'm looking at Kissoluv 0's and Thirsties covers to start. But just when I think I"ve made up my mind, I'll read a review of someone who was't happy with Kissoluv's! I know it is a big upfront investment and I want to make the right decision. After the newborn stage I am thinking of Gdiaps with cloth inserts since I do already own several medium size covers that a friend gave me, and BumGenius AIO 3.0. But once again, get worried! LOL

Kreolemom
08-12-2009, 11:02 PM
I got a bunch of the Kissaluvs 0s from a friend and have been using them on my son since he was a week old, he is now 8 weeks old. I haven't had any problems with them. They are starting to get a little small so I don't think they will last but another couple of weeks. I don't use them at night though because they don't last the 7 hours that my son sleeps.

For covers I have loved my xs Thirsties and they still fit. The newborn Bummis Super Whisper Wraps are great too, but he outgrew them around 5 to 6 weeks.

I would also try some newborn prefolds (pf) since they are a lot cheaper than fitteds. I just trifolded them in the Thirsties or BSWW covers. The covers will need to be washed more often but you don't have to worry about pins or snappis. I got my pfs from greenmountaindiapers.com

I would get a few Pockets or All in Ones (AIOs) for the diaper bag. I have some small Fuzzi Bunz and they work great so far. I just ordered some Thirsties AIOs to try and want to get some BGs too.

Don't get too many expensive things for the newborn stage since they outgrow them very quickly. I would save the fun and fancy stuff for small sizes or one size diapers.

MrsCoffeeLa
08-13-2009, 06:39 AM
Thanks so much for your post Kreolemom! Yes, in just the past few days, I convinced myself to dive head first into prefolds! LOL. I was a little afraid of them to be honest, which is why I was going to go straight kissaluv's for the newborn stage, but after more reading, am now leaning towards the green mountain prefolds (2doz newborn, and 3 doz small) with the thirsties duo wrap covers(suppose to work well form birth to about 15 pounds), with some hemp inserts to help at night and naps, and snappies. Hoping all that will get me through 4-5 months? Guess it just depends on how long the baby can stay in the size 1 thirsties duo wrap covers. I've built my shopping cart, and really just waiting to make sure I don't need anything else. I just want to keep the system simple and easy. I don't have anything for the 'diaper bag', and probably should look at pockets or aio's as you suggest for going out.

Get together: I'd love to! My oldest is in Head Start in Slidell and my 19 mo will soon be starting speech therapy so I have to see what dates Im free.

I also am group owner of the Cafemom Slidell MOms group if anyone is on cafemom? You're welcome to join from other parts of La :)

Oh that sounds so interesting. Uptown is a lot closer than Covington. I may be on the Northshore Sat to visit the Mandeville market and watch a Saints game at a friend's house. I may try to stop by Bosom Babies if I get a chance.

glutenfreegirl: I would love to be a tester for you. My DS is two months old last week. He is still fitting into most of his small diapers.

I hope I don't sound too dumb, but what is raw milk?

theantithesis: Congrats on the new baby.

Any suggestions on where we could meet? Southshore or Northshore is fine with me.

raw milk is straight from the cow... unpasteurized and not homogenized. It tastes wonderful and makes GREAT chocolate milk. It is also really illegal to buy it or sell it in Louisiana, but not to have it. I became addicted to it when I lived in San Francisco, and it was sold at Whole Foods... I don't know why it is still illegal.
I go to the Mandeville farmers market every week, it is right by where I live, but I am thinking of going to covington this week, just to see what is different.

The Covington Market is great and definately worth checking it out!!! We generally go there over the Mandeville Market, but they are both fantastic.

Im' sure many of us have different kinds we no longer need and may help others? I'd def go if it was a weekday and I'd go on the north or south shore. Hey yall! I live in SW MS but I'm a Louisiana girl in my heart. I just moved back to MS about 2 years ago right before I got married. I miss Baton Rouge so bad! I just saw an ad for Bosom Babies and called them this morning to check their hours so we could drive over, it's about 1.5 hours from here. I want to find out what she has in stock before we go! When are the farmers markets in Covington and Mandeville? They sound better than our little bitty one in St. Francisville!

I am from Morgan City but now live in Kentwood. There is a store in Covington that sells BG and other items. I bought my Moby there. Drawing a blank on the name, but the little second hand store knows the name. Can't think of the name of that store either. I guess the more kids I have the more memory I loose.:headscratch:

We are looking to move to the Monroe area - I have a job at Glenwood Medical Center. I would really like some mamas to talk to about the area and stuff. The thought of moving away from all of our family really scares me :(

I've been wanting to come to Mandeville to go to Bosom Babies, does anyone think it's worth the 2 hour drive?

Also, I'm looking for a new OBGYN in Baton Rouge. I want to use the BR General for my next baby and I'd love to have a doctor who will actually listen to me and my concerns and not treat me like an idiot. GRRR! I heard there's a group at the Oschner Clinic on Bluebonnet that has a midwife in their practice. Any suggestions?

Hello LA Mamas! I am also in Slidell, and not to mention totally new to the idea of cloth diapering, I think it's a little too late for DS (he's 2 and a half), we are PLing and I ordered the Imse Vimse trainers, does anyone have any other trainers they would recommend?

Kristin, I saw on your sig that you have an allergy child, DS is an allergy kid but no food/med allergies that we know of just sick ALL THE TIME. In the past 3 months we've had pneumonia twice AND swine flu... ugh. What kind of allergies does your child have and how do you deal?

-Rachel

dreamingkristin
12-29-2009, 12:08 PM
Rachel - my kids are food allergy kiddos... my DS1 was allergic to all dairy until about 2 years old.. he is now 5 and only has asthma now... He was also my 29 weeker preemie...
My DD is my problem child in more than one way! haha! She is a pistol but she is my most severe allergy child... She was allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, peanuts and treenuts... and was failure to thrive - refused to eat for awhile and then never gained weight - she had a feeding tube for about 6 months.. but has outgrown everything except peanuts and treenuts which is likely to be lifelong allergies..we are in the process of outgrowing/trialing dairy stuff this week.. so as of this week she has had yogurt and mac and cheese and all is good..
My DS2 is allergic to dairy I think.. but his is presenting as mostly congestion and ear infections (just like DS1) so he is on soy formula although the congestion and ear infections are still there... he had horrible poops on Allimintum so we have just stayed away from dairy in general with him too...

I hate allergiest of any kinda.. my DH has plenty of enviornmental allergies and is getting allergy shots now which seem to be really helping..

BUT yes.. my youngest is sick all the time!! Its driving me crazy right now... he was up all last night with yet antoher ear infection!!! 4 in just under 4 months.. seems we are running about a week between ending antibotics and starting a new round.. I'm DONE with them I tell you! DONE! Can't do them to his body anymore... and yet I don't wanna do tubes either... I'm adding probiotics to his bottles along with Omega Oil (Flax oil) that the allergist suggested to help boost his immune system....

eracheld
12-29-2009, 12:22 PM
We have yet to test ds yet but his allergist put him on a medication called xyzal which seems to be working relatively well. I also suspected the dairy allergy but the allergist said it's probably just environmental :/ I hate drugging my child but I feel like I have no other options at this point, so we're sticking with it. The allergist says there is a good chance that he will outgrow it but probably not until at least age 6 :(

On another note, I would highly recommend the tubes, ds got them in april as well as the adenoidectomy and his speech improved so much even in just the first few weeks. And IMO I would rather him have that than constantly be medicated, that way when they are older their bodies and illnesses will respond to anitbiotics.

I am still suspicious of Joshua having the milk allergy, I have considered removing all dairy and going gfcf, is that what you do?

Hi! Not to hijack the thread or anything, but Cassie and I are planning a little DS playdate if you're interested, Jan 4th at my house in Slidell :) Pm me if you're interested! :)

We have lots of food issues here too. I have Celiac disease and run this: http://louisianaceliac.blogspot.com

My littlest has Autism and is on the GF and MOSTLY CF diet. Oldest has gluten sensitivity (but not full blown Celiac) and is GF also.

I jsut picked up a good cookbook called the Kid Friendly Allergy Free Cookbook from BDalton--they're going out of Business so everything is 40 % off at the one in the mall in Slidell if you can ge tout there. If not, I'd be happy to scan recipes and email em to anyone.

oh Amy-- I so could have used that cookbook a year ago when her diet was so limited! Its so much better and easier now... everyone who isn't dealing with food allergies told me I should write a cookbook called "Kaci Safe" and publish al lthe recipies and food ideas I had for feeding her... but with DS2 having issues with milk/diary it would be a good idea to get that book too..

Well we were gonna have a playdate but Cassie had the baby 4 weeks early! I think all are well tho, still 6lbs 2oz I think she said!

I highly suggest to anyone with food/allergy issues ot get tested for Celiac. That causes a TON of problems, including looking like food allergies, seasonal allergies, etc. My celiac blog is http://louisianaceliac.blogspot.com

I used an allergist in Ochsner in Slidell, Dr Secora It hink her name was? She was great when we found out my oldest was allergic to cats!

Hey everybody:wave2:! I just found the SE forum and this LA thread.

I am in BR, for now. I am expecting twin boys in December and am very excited to CD. Unfortunately, we will be moving shortly after the boys come as my husband will have graduation CRNA school and taken a job somewhere else (at least we hope).

Anybody know if Bosom Babies is still open? My DH and I both are on the weekend shift this week so have all this week to go visit!

Oh, and I have been to Zuka if anyone was wondering about them. They are really great and very very helpful. My DH was sooooo much more comfortable with the CDing idea after we spent 1.5 hours putting every diaper she had on the practice teddy bear! :giggle2:

Anyway, glad to see I'm not the only 'crazy tree hugger' in South LA!

Hi Ladies!! I am coming to Bossier to visit my parents for a month and am going to need detergent. Last time I was home, I had a really hard time and ended up with a lot of stains, as they have very hard water. Is there anywhere locally that I can buy some or does anyone have a recommendation? I use Rockin' Green when I'm home in Alaska. Thanks!!

Bosom babies is open. It moved though onto 190 near bonefish grill.

I'm in Slidell! Well, Bay Saint Louis (20 minutes outside of Slidell), but my DH works in Slidell.. and that's where we will be moving once I'm done with school.

I'm 24, and have a 2 and half month old daughter. :)

I live in Picayune, MS but its seems like I spend all my time in New Orleans and Slidell (: My favorite diaper shop is Zuka Baby on Magazine street. They carry a huge variety of cloth and some really cute eco clothes and baby stuff.

What's the best area to live in around New Orleans? I want to live in the best school district. I'm looking for family oriented areas and safe. Any suggestions?

There are no good school districts in NO! if you want good schools you go private! I was born there (well, Metairie) and my dad and his whole family are from there. It is a unique place. You can be living in a great area and then have projects two streets over. Good luck. It is a beautiful city with so much history and culture. It is just another world!

Covington, which is across the lake, is about 30-45 min from downtown new Orleans. The school district is nice, the areas are safe and family friendly and cleaner than living in the city.

Best place around New Orleans for living/schools?

St Tammany parish has some of the best schools in the state. Usually ranked top 5 in their standardized test scores.

That would be Slidell, Mandeville, Covington, etc.

So, if you were moving there, which city would you live in? Convington? Slidell? Or Mandeville? I feel so overwhelmed! My son is special needs and has to go public. Where's there a good special needs program?

Ayer79, I'd check out Madisonville and Mandeville as your top options. I've lived in Mandeville, Covington, and Madisonville over the psat 11 years, and now that I have a 4 year old, we made sure to plant ourselves in Madisonville and the schools are a huge part of that. We are planning on homeschooling at least for the next few years, but I feel comforted every day I when drive past Madisonville Elementary.
