I need some quick advise. I think dd is developing a UTI. She cried a lot when she peed this morning and told me it hurt. When I asked her to point to where it hurts she pointed to her vag. Plus her diaper smelled really strong. She had terrible blow out diarrheas late last week so I'm guessing some got where it shouldn't have. She has no fever and doesn't complain when I press on her belly so it is definitely just lower at this point. I want to avoid the doctor because I have no intention on letting them catherterize her. She has EXTREME doctor phobia (to the point of screaming and crying whenever she sees someone other than me in scrubs). But she isn't potty trained so I can't just tell her to pee in a cup. What can I try at home so I don't have to take her in? Can I just load her up with cranberry juice or is there something that would work better/faster for a 2-year old?
Thank you!!

Aww, poor baby! UTI's are nothing to play with. She really needs antibiotics. I know my DD went from a low grade to 104.5 temp overnight with her UTI. I would not take the chance. They are very painful too. They don't have to catherize her, refuse it and they can do the sticky bag that catches the pee.
For an adult I would say real cranberry juice from the natural foods section (100% juice) but, for a LO I have to say she needs the doctor right away.

I agree with the PP - if your daughter has a UTI, that means she has bacteria growing somewhere in her urinary tract and it needs to be treated with antibiotics.

Take your DD to the doctor mama. My brother suffered horrible kidney damage from an untreated UTI as a child. He had to have his kidney removed when he was 15. UTI's need treatment. You can refuse the cath and have them bag her to get some urine.
Good luck. :hugs:

Thanks, I have a call in to the nurse. I didn't realize I could use the bag instead. I will definitely not be letting them cath her. They will have to sedate us both! Hopefully they will let me just go in and pick her up. I literally can't take her near any doctors or nurses without histerics and then her not sleeping for a week because of the nightmares. We are trying to save it up for our visit with the allergist later this summer.

UPDATE : So my drs. office sucks! I love them usually but they absolutely will not use a bag, only cath her or have her pee in a cup. They say it doesn't get a "sterile" sample. Well dd is 2 and isn't interested in peeing in a cup and they will absolutely not be cathing her. They don't have to stay up with her for the next week cause she can't sleep through her nightmares (no, I'm not being dramatic, this is what happens whenever we have a dr. encounter). Soooo I had her pee in her potty and dumped it in a specimin cup  . I did wipe the potty first with the little wipes they gave me so hopefully it will be relatively clean but I did have to fish a dog hair out of the pee :giggle2: . Maybe I'm crazy but I think the worst case scenario of doing it this way is that they find some bacteria that isn't actually in her urinary system and falsely treat her with antibotics? Of course I don't want that to happen so we will see what the results come back with before I decide to treat her but it is better than having to sedate her to do a cath.
In the mean time she is drinking straight up cranberry juice and we started her on probiotics this morning just in case.

SS, mama! We went through 5 visits in 8 days with a kidney infection in February, and dd got so she'd scream when the dr waiting room door opened, so I know what you're going through. You know, the catheter is traumatic, but when we did the bag speciman, dd didn't like that *either*, and since it did show a problem, we just had to move on to the catheter. (They would only have accepted the bag speciman as final if it were bacteria-free, and you seem to already know that your dd's won't be.)
But I'd take her in quickly and do what you have to do. You do NOT want this to progress to a kidney infection.

I despise antibitoics. None of my kids have taken then since my 5 yod was born and given them in the hospital after she passed her meconium. I was given them as well and it basic broke my body down to the point where I could fight anything on my own. I developed very severe candida that I am still battling with today.
I use alternatives for antibiotics. My favorite is colliadial silver and/or garlic. In conjunction with that I use a pure essential oil called Theives and put it on their feet using reflexology. For UTIs I simply do what you're doing. My oldest doesn't like the bitterness of cranberry juice so I bought he chewables at the health food store. Some people don't know this but you must give the pure cranberry juice in order for it to be effective. The cranberry juice you would buy at the regular store won't be effective. I must be pure juice. Again, I only mention this because some people aren't aware of that. The probiotic is perfect and the fact you're using it tells me that you already know about the pure juice. :)
Anyway, I can understand how you feel about certain aspect of the drs office. It took me over 7 years to find a ped that I LOVED. I even took my kids to a family practitioner that didn't frown upon my interest in natural medicine before I found the ped that we use. But he wasn't specialize in children as much as I would prefer. I finally found a wholistic doctor who is strong in preventative medicine and supportive of alternatives.
I am so sorry she's struggling with this. I do hope it all works out well.

hey mama,
I have a home remedy for you-
this came from a world renowned Urologist that my husband worked for-
put 1 tsp. honey in 1 cup of Braggs apple cider vinegar and warm in the microwave. stir to dissolve the honey. Encourage her to drink it as soon as possible, taking sips until it is all gone. I have 4 girls and have been thru this many times, the home rememdy helps every time and we never had to go to the dr. or be cathetered, thank goodness. It wouldnt hurt to try.....

You should def start your dd on a probiotic. I read somewhere that when a child is on a probiotic everyday they rarly get UTI or kidney infections. I am not sure about what to do for now since my dd has never had one, but I would probably go ahead and do the antibiotics if she did get one. GL and I hope she starts feeling better!!
Wanted to add: If you have a whole foods or natural foods market trying getting a "good" brand. The ones that are already cold are going to be the best options!

Ok one more thing to add...lol..If she does go on the antibiotics, it is REALLY important to have the probiotic. For 2 weeks while and after the round give the probiotic twice a day, then you can go back to once a day.
