If this question should be posted elsewhere, let me know .
My insurance company doesn't cover homebirths :banghead: . They'll cover midwife-assisted births if the midwife is under supervision by a doctor. (I think this is what they told me...it's been a while since I talked to them.) Have any of you gotten your ins. co. to pay for a homebirth when they originally said they wouldn't?
I'm working on a letter to try to convince them to reimburse me (may be wasting my time :headscratch: ). They sent me a "welcome package" to their Special Beginnings program and one of the things in it was an issue of Lamaze magazine. Ann Grauer makes the following statement in “Shopping for Care” on page 6, “Conventional wisdom says that childbirth should happen in a hospital with a doctor, but if you’re healthy and have a low risk of complications, giving birth at home or in a birth center is just as safe as (and sometimes even safer than) a hospital.” She goes on to say “When you go into labor and walk through the hospital doors, the staff may think of you as a sick person. Often, medication and technology are used to treat problems that may never arise. Studies published in The Cochrane Library have shown that this may actually increase your risk for complications.” Later Grauer, in discussing provider options, points out “Studies show that midwifery care is not just safe but is very appropriate for healthy, low-risk women.”
I've included this in the letter I'm composing. Any thoughts or suggestions?
