I know that sounds like a silly question and I sort of feel stupid asking it  . I know you can get pregnant while nursing, but how safe is it? If I want to get pregnant again should I be done nursing before we try? I want to nurse for at least 1yr and don't want to risk not being able to breastfeed if I get pregnant. How hard is it on a women's body? I would like to get pregnant before my baby is a year however. Thanks for your responses!

I also know it's usually harder to get pregnant while you're breastfeeding, so even though it would be ideal to get pregnant it might not be as easy!

It is definitley safe to be pregnant AND nursing! Lots of mamas here nurse while pregnant and then go on to tandem nurse.

I haven't personally done it (my DD was weaned when I got pregnant) but I'm sure there will be others will chime in.

I'm 39 weeks pregnant, still nursing. I got pregnant on my 2nd pp cycle, when my son was close to 13 months old. and was nursing 6 times a day (and night). I had no issues, no cramping, only some minor and sporadic nipple soreness. Only the last few months has my milk pretty much gone away, although at this point we only nurse once a day so that might have happened anyway.

I didn't find it really harder on my body, I certianly never had any issues with weight loss (as IF) and have gained a "more than ample amount". LOL.
Also, I was taking vitamin b6 to correct a BFing-induced short luteal phase (of 8 days). I got pregnant before I ever saw it more than that, so I'm assuming it worked. (we were charting/temping).

You can cross post this in breastfeeding support, I'm sure you'll get tons of answers. :-)

I think the only time it *may* pose a risk is if you have high risk pregnancies for some reason or another, but the majority of the time breastfeeding is fine and dandy during pregnancy. I just did it and am now tandem nursing. I actually liked having something to trigger contractions in the last few weeks. LOL

i got preg. with my 2nd while nursing 1st, no probs. with pregnancy because of that. i had nipple soreness and didn't realize that my preg. changed the taste of milk and that 1st was going on a nursing strike. so i just quit and weaned her. now i know better.

I am pregnant and nursing still (although we are in the ~slow~ process of weaning). The soreness is there in the first few seconds of nursing (I breathe through it) and then it's fine. I tell my dd "gentle" and she's happy to accomodate, she doesn't want to hurt me. DD is 30 months old.
I did have 2 losses while nursing before this, so I am *super* careful to watch for my body's cues and immediately stop nursing if it doesn't feel right for any reason.

Thanks Mamas! I really appreciate all your feedback and for not making me feel stupid for asking this question!

:giggle: I did it twice so it can be done, and in my case, it was amazingly easy to get pregnant. Dd was almost 6mo when I got pregnant with Ds1. Bfing hadn't been going that well and I was looking for an excuse to quit. I got pregnant with Ds2 when Ds1 was 8mo and I kept nursing Ds1 up till he gave it up easily at 15 months and Ds2 was born a month later.

I was nursing (although I had to cut back to conceive, my son was 2 1/2 at the time.) I went on to nurse until he totally weaned himself at almost 3. I have three friends that nursed babies from the age of 12 months-2 years all through their pregnancies. My doctor even okayed it for me. :)

I want to note I have a miscarriage history too and no problems w/ nursing pregnant.
