View Full Version : If you were induced, did you end up having a c-section?

I was induced with my 1st. Ended up in a c-section. Just wondering how many other Mama's who had to be induced ended up there too.

Technically I was induced, we got excited over early labor and I got to the hospital at just 2 cm was 3 days past EDD, and they just decided to keep me. I didn't know any better then. Since I hadn't progressed on my own after a few hours they broke my water and put me on pit at 8 am that morning and I had him vaginally at 4:40pm that afternoon. So no I didn't end up with a c-section..although I didn't realize that I had just up-ed my chances of having one by going in so early..I might not have had him for another week!

well, this doesn't apply to me yet (and hopefully I won't need induction for any reason), but my best friend was induced and she ended up having a c-section. They told her that her pelvis was too narrow for the baby to get through. I think my sister in law was given pitocin to help "speed things along" (not really induction, but still a use of pitocin) and she managed to deliver vaginally (but then again she had a bad reaction to the meds and they had to stop giving them).

I was induced with the intent of a 12 hour labor. I ended up going 29 1/2 hours and was half hour away from a Csection. DS was stubborn as H***!

I was induced with DS#3 as they had been monitoring me via u/s for a month and according to the u/s had not gained any weight during that time, nor had his height changed. He was labeled IUGR, and I was given a week to try and get him out on my own, or else I'd be induced.
Ended up induced, with a 10 hr labor and no c-section needed. DS #3 was NOT IUGR when he was born....he was a healthy 7lb 19" and needed no assistance at birth.

Well, I didn't technically get "induced" b/c I was already in early labor for a few hours during the afternoon and then all night..but it wasn't getting 'OMG painful' so my Ob said, if it didn't get that bad by the next morning (3 am..so random:headscratch: ) that I should head to the hospital for some pit. Got the pit., contrax were painful but manageable, had my water broken after a few hours on the pit. then had my epidural an hour later cuz I thought I was dying of uterine pain :yuck: , then delivered DD vaginally a few hours later. I'm reallllly glad that my ignorance didn't cause me to have a c-section b/c I don't do well w/ surgery, my recovery would've s*cked!

I was induced with both my boys b/c after my water broke and 24 hours later, I still never once had a contraction and they were both delivered naturally

I was induced because of PreEclampsia I did a 26.5 hour labor, but delivered vaginally.

I had progressed to 4cm painlessly over the course of 3 weeks with my ds. During that time I had some questionable blood pressures, so my ob sent me to be induced 3 days before edd. After pitosin to get regular contractions and breaking my water, I had my 9lb 3oz boy after only 8 hours.

With DS I was in labor for 37hrs and was only at 3cm so they gave me PIT to help me along and I had him vaginally after 20mins of pushing.

With DD I was induced because I was just flat out miserable, I couldnt walk, I was swollen to the point the only clothes I could wear was DHs and the only shoes were my flip flops in Feb and March. I asked to be induced. My labor with her was SOOO much easier and better than it was with DS. She was born vaginally too, only 10hrs of labor and 10mins of pushing.

I was induced with my first dc (2 weeks past EDD) and 4th dc (1 1/2 weeks past EDD) and both were vaginal delivery. I went into labor on my own with my 2nd and 3rd dc and they also were vaginal deliveries.

I was induced at home (arom) with DD1 and had her vaginally. But I have no doubts in the power of the "cascade of interventions" and will do my best to avoid any future inductions at all costs.

Im supposed to be induced tomorrow night and am so scared it'll end up a CS. With my first I started labor on my own but my Dr broke my water. Delivered vaginally while on an epidural.

I have been induced with 4 pregnancies and NONE ended in a c/section! I had pitocin AND an epidural. My dd3's birth was my best labor and delivery! I was induced with pitocin {no dilation or anything}, had an epidural at 2cms and a couple of hours later was holding her! Wonderful experience! If I could have babies like that again, I would feel blessed!:goodvibes: {Well, I would like to not be induced, but I mean how great it was}.

I was induced and had my boy almost exactly 11 hrs later.

I'd do it again in a minute. I had no reaction at all to any of the medication. Had an epidural and 15 minutes after it was in I was fully dilated! Had the baby 45 min later. There were cord issues which caused a great deal of stress and an emergency forceps delivery, but other than that it all went well.

I was induced twice. DD was an epidural birth, 7hrs and DS was all natural/induced and was 18hrs (give and take a few contraction less breaks). They induced me w/both using Pitocin and breaking my water.

Oh I went in because I was SUPER excited, I was loosing my "Plug" and didn't really understand everything that was going on... I mean I was a day shy of being a WEEK past my EDD! Plus I was a teen momma... My Fiance and I are were both 19 and had just graduated from Highschool 2 months prior... So I was enduced on Friday and had my DD Saturday after I went the 23 hours of LABOR... GRRRRRRR If I knew then what I do now! However, I have decided when I have baby number 2 (not in the making now... just Practising...hehehe) to do a home birth as, I had a REALLY hard time with the Epideral!

No C-section, but I'm pretty sure I was about to have that kid in the next day or so anyways. Going in I was already 4cm dialated. I don't know why they even induced me, if I could go back I would have definitely refused.

I was induced on my due date because the DR was worried about my pelvis not being wide enough to give birth and didn't want DD getting any bigger and wanted me to try to have her natural. He was right. I went through 30 hours of labor and she would not drop down. When she would try it was putting to much pressure and here and her heart rate was going up and down. So they decided they needed to do a c-section.

With my first DD, I was induced, and only narrowly avoided a c-section for "failure to progress/fetal distress". I begged to keep pushing while they set up the OR, and luckily, DD descended far enough that the doc was able to get forceps (the easiest forceps delivery she ever did) around her head. I'm thinking that forceps really weren't necessary, and since DD had an APGAR of 9, she wasn't in distress much either.

i was induced 'cause of LOW fluid and after 6hrs of STRONG contractions but only dialated at a 2; they said either epi or c-section. baby was stressing and so was i. I took the epi; and dialated to a 10 in 30min; 2 pushes later he was out.

i worked as a L&D tech in a small town hosp. for 9 months. I saw that 1st time moms who want to be induced starting at 36 wks. - 40 wks. and got an early epidural (early in labor), that most ended up with a c-section. the reasons for this are that they (the women) weren't waiting until 40 wks. or later, also with 1st timers you body is learning what it needs to do to push this baby out and the meds. make it go to fast then add the epidural and that slows it down so you stall and get a c-section. sometimes having an epidural towards the end (5-6cm)is fine and doesn't cause any probs, in fact it can help you relax. then there is also the dr. aspect, alot of them expect their inductions to be delivered by lunch (1pm at the latest) and if they aren't then they say your not progressing and send you to a c-section. moms who have had more than 1 child, wait until 40 wks. have a very small percent of a chance to have a c-section because their bodies know what to do and so do the moms. my advice as a mom of 7 (been induced 2x) is don't get induced unless you need to (i.e. the dr. thinks its a survival issue) or wait until you are past 40wks. and take the pain as long as you can. most important is talk to your dr. before hand and let him know that you don't want a c-section unless there is real distress. i let my ob know this and he let me go until I delivered at 5pm and would have let me go longer. so that's my 2 cents.

I was induced b/c DS was late and big. Turns out he was too big for my narrow hips so they did a c-sec. He would have come that way w/o being induced.

I was induced with DD (my first) due to Pre-Eclampsia and Pregnancy Induced Hypertension at 37w4d. They did cervidil over night, that didnt do anything, then started me on Pit in the morning. I didnt progress past 2cm and my Dr broke my water (really without any communication with me GRRR) about 4 hrs into the Pit. Then he wouldnt let me go more than 12 hrs once my water was broken. He started pressuring me about 8 hrs into for a c-section and about 10.5 hrs in I agreed to the section.

Im hoping for a VBAC this time, but I will be 40 weeks on Fri and as of last week hadnt made much progress...a fingertip dilated and 70% effaced. Im getting nervous!

Yes I ended up with a c-s but it was not due to the induction, it was due to my baby, her distress and the anatomy of my body.

I was induced due to gestational diabetes concerns with both of my girls and had a vaginal delivery both times. I was dilated to 3 cm both times though. My second delivery where they didn't break my water was much better. A friend of mine was induced at 38 weeks for no medical reason with no signs of readiness and then ended up with a c/s for "failure to progress." Grrr, I am so mad at her doctor!

MY DS I had my water broken around 11:00 am and delivered at 4:35pm, no additional meds required.

DD my water broke at 5:00am they gave me pitocin (? spelling) around 8:00am and delivered at 12:16pm. Dr was going out of town and I really did not want anyone other than her so I went for the pitocin otherwise wouldn't have done that.

Sorry, I have one of those horror stories.

My first labor, at 41 weeks, I had pitocin starting at "a fingertip dilated." Up to 3 cms, t was 8 hours of unmedicated pitocin induced labor. I tried to be strong through the contractions, but I would just break down crying. I would bite the arm rails of the bed. I screamed. I begged and pleaded for an epidural for 8 hours. There were times I thought having a c-section would have been heaven. They refused to give me the epidural because I wasn't progressing fast enough and they didn't want it to stall my labor. They kept telling me I HAD to at least be 4 cm. They finally gave in after they checked me and I was still 3-3.5, and said they'd just call it 4.

I don't know why some people can get pitocin at 2 cms... and I had to wait through so much pain, while they kept upping the pitocin. Might be something to ask your doctor about though. If I could have gotten the epidural when I first started screaming... I probably would have had a better birth experience.

I think I was close to having a c-section. I honestly believe that had I continued to progress at that rate I would have had a c-section.

Now, for some people, it doesn't go like that. They say they had pit and the labor wasn't that bad, and I'm sure some people do experience that, but I'm not willing to risk it again. That experience itself makes my uterus cringe at the thought of pitocin.

I was only induced with my 3rd pg. I was 40.5 weeks and it was my choice that we induce. I was fearful because my oldest son has so many problems (developmental delays and brain damage) and part of the problem is he had the cord around his neck and was sunny side up and got stuck -- the delivery was very traumatic and he had meconium in the fluid. I'm not sure that I helped anything or not by getting induced a few days after my due date -- it was a painful delivery but there were absolutely no problems and she is a healthy little girl. We didn't need a c-section. The closest I got to getting a c-section was with my first who was stuck and wouldn't crown and we ended up having forceps and suction to pull him out. (ETA: I didn't have a c-section or induction with DS2 but he was huge -- close to 10 pounds and my dr. did frighten me by telling me my 3rd could be even bigger and that was also a factor in going in "early" for an induction ... both of the boys were born after 41 weeks).

I was induced at 41 weeks and it ended in a c/s. at 41 weeks 5 days. I was induced with the gel that is supposed to help soften and dilate. I never even made it to 1 cm. I did have contractions for a few hours that made it to 2 minutes apart and then just suddenly stopped, never had another contraction, they tried more of the gel and it did nothing..Waited it out few days. They said they couldn't use pictocin because it wasn't favorable and we would ended in an emergency c/s and if they were going to do a c/s we would rather it be planned and not an emergency.
she hadn't dropped, cord was around her neck. They couldn't break water because she was soo high. So it ended with a c/s.

I was induced and I think the reason why I hated it was b/c I refuse an epidural.. contractions were painful and hard (esp compared to when I had my second..) I didnt have a c section though.

MacMama
07-14-2008, 01:32 PM
I was induced with my second, and it was a quick and easy vaginal delivery. I probably wouldn't do it again, because I didn't make it with my "no-epi" plan due to the contractions not giving me a break -- they were coming 30 seconds apart and lasted over a minute, and about an hour before I ended up delivering I gave up and got the epidural. Over all though, it was an awesome delivery.

MyTwoSunshines
07-14-2008, 01:37 PM
I was induced all 3 times and had 1 c-section. My first was an induction because she was premature, I was stalled in labor and her heart rate was dropping. My second was induction that ended in emergency c-section due to partial placenta abruption. My last baby was a planned induction (my first full term baby!) because we didn't want baby to be too big to come out vaginally and I wanted a VBAC. They broke my water at 8am and she was born at 3:53pm after less than 20 minutes of pushing. She was 8 lbs. 13.2 oz. of perfection!! I had epidurals with all 3 as well and no complications from that. If all my labor/deliveries would've been as easy as my third, it would've been great! It was an awesome experience from start to finish. :goodvibes:

With ds1 I was induced for high b/p 2 days past my edd. My induction started on a Sunday night with cytotec and then Pitocin on Monday at 8am. I FINALLY had him vaginally at 5 am on Tuesday. I had an epidural, fever, IV antibiotics, yuck. And it took forever to get me into active labor. I think if I had had any other doctor on call, including my own, I would have had a c/s.

I was induced and ended with a c/s. I think it could have been avoided if they hadn't broken my water at 3 cm though. I'm kind of bitter about it. I was also induced at 36 weeks so things really were progressing really really slowly.

I was induced with DD 3 days past EDD. It wasn't too bad. I was given a walking epi and labor only lasted 12 hours. I was induced with DS a week before EDD because I was miserable. I was fat and bloated and couldn't fit in any of my clothes. Plus DD was bigger than expected (8lbs. 4 oz.) and DS was 8lbs 6 oz. DS delivery was pretty much the same except for it was only 10 hours long and they didn't have to use the vaccum to get him out. I'm gonna try to not be induced with the next one.

I was induced at 38 weeks because of my blood clotting disorders. The nurse started by stripping my membranes and I immidiately went into labor. I then had the gel to soften my cervix.

I was so afraid of stillbirth that I was in a hurry for it to be over (my risk for stillbirth was high, and I couldn't bear it). I let them break my water at 3cm, start pitosin, and give me an epidural. Where I to do it all over again, I would have been more patient. I would have waited to break my water, not started pitosin, and put off the epidural. However, I was a new mom, and I was scared, and the statistics were against me.

That said, my body did do what it was supposed to do. Unfortunately, DS's head was sunny-side up, which is a difficult way to birth your first baby. He got stuck in my pelvis and no amount of pushing could get him out. So yes, I did end up with a c-section. I feel like if I hadn't had the epidural and was able to move around during labor, that perhaps he would have turned, but of course I can't know that for sure.

I definitely don't recommend starting pitosin unless you have an epidural lined up though. I didn't know there was such a thing as a walking epi!

If I do it again and have a chance at a VBAC, I'll definitely do things differently. Unfortunately, my blood clotting disorders don't leave me with as many options.

I was induced at 41 weeks with my 3rd child. All the doctor had to do was rupture the amniotic sac, and then labor started in half an hour, and I had the babe in my arms after another hour and a half. There were no complications. It was very easy. And it was so quick that I wonder if I would have had the baby at home or in the car had I gone into labor naturally.

I was induced with my first and that ended in a horrific forceps delivery with a 3rd degree episiotomy (last ditch effort before a c). My baby spent the first 4 hours in observation.

Second was induced (BP issues) and came quickly and no issues. But, I had a proven pelvis, so that alone reduces odds of cesarean.

Whether or not you have a c with induction is largely dependent on your bishop score (how favorable your cervix is, baby's position, etc). A first timer with a low bishop score is more likely to have a cesarean birth than a second timer that's 3 cm dilated already.

That said, you never know how baby will handle pit. Pit contractions are very strong and even though mom can get pain relief if she wants it, baby cannot. baby is essentially jack hammered into a pelvis that is not ready. It's may not be that the mom's pelvis that is medically "too small," but rather her body isn't ready and hasn't produced the hormones to open it yet. Cephalopelvic Disproportion (CPD) (small pelvis) is actually quite rare. Yet you here that all the time here in the US.

The rising rate of elective inductions are the reason why there are rising rates of cesareans in the US. The two are interconnected when you look at the research.

There's also been some studies linkin Pitocin to Autism. And the problem with all these drugs being used in labor is that we don't know the effects until 20-30 years down the road. That's how medicine works.

In my opinion induction should be avoided at all cost unless it's truly medically necessary. (Over due not being a medical reason to induce unless baby is showing problems)

Having had two medically necessary induced births, I'm determined not be induced this time.

With DD#1, I was induced due to gestational hypertension at 38 weeks- with pitocin, cervadil, a foley bulb, membranes stripped and water broken... I declined the epidural though and had a 16 hour labor and 2.5 hours of HARD pushing, but no c/s. When I was induced I was 0% effaced and not dialated at all. She was 8lb 10 oz.

With DD#2, she died a little before 31 weeks and I was induced- had cervadil and cytotech and got an epi when I was about 2cm b/c I was contracting hard every minute, due to the cytotech, this went on for at least 16 hours- I delivered her vaginally on the 31 week mark after about 18 hours of labor. I was 1cm and 0% effaced. She was 5lb 3 oz.

I was induced with ds1 due to worsening preeclampsia. I was suppossed to be on bedrest but my abusive bf at the time insisted I continue doing everything, as did his mother and rest of his family :banghead: . My labor was pretty short, 26 hrs after starting the pit/cervidil but only 10 hrs from the time they broke my water and labor got serious. Unfortunately he hadn't engaged yet and was trying to come out shoulder first. Ended up with shoulder dystocia and a vacuum extraction after 2 hrs of pushing, 9 lb 3 oz limp and not breathing baby. It wasn't pretty. I actually BEGGED for a c-section because I knew something just wasn't right. He ended up with a really bruised (but luckily not broken) shoulder/arm and then pneumonia from being stuck and not suctioned well enough after delivery. He also has some issues that may or may not be related to oxygen deprivation during the delivery.

My other 9 lb boy was also born at 38 wks and slid right out. I was offered an elective c-section with him due to the previous dystocia but decided against it. I can't say if a c-section would have been the better thing with ds1, the drs knew he was going to be large (afterwards they said they had guestimated 8.5-9 lbs just by external palpatation), they tried 2x to turn him internally during labor (OUCH! :yikes: ). I feel bad that delivering him vaginally just about killed him and may have caused longer lasting issues.

I was induced with my first, and had no complications.
Was not induced with my second.
With my third, they stopped my labor and then started it again with pitocin and I had placental abruption and emergancy c-section.
I was induced with my fourth and had a successful VBAC.

My water broke and I waited for 12 hours to go to the hospital, but I wasn't really in active labor yet. They gave Pitocin for another 24 hours and I delivered vaginally. (Pitocin is EVIL, btw!) Most people are suprised I didn't have a c/s--I'm so thankful I didn't!

My daughter was induced at a week after edd. She'd had mild pre-labor stuff but after being induced all day wasn't progressing in dialation. Then meconium was discovered and when they tried to flush the womb baby's heartbeat went to nothing for a min... so an emergency c-section was performed. Baby was only 5lbs. 13oz. and had to have her lungs suctioned, in nicu for 5 days but is a healthy 7mo. old now. So glad for the emergency Csection ect. BUT I'm nearly convinced that the induction caused the stress and meconium in the first place. So not a fan.

I was induced with both of my girls...the first because my amniotic fluid was leaking & the second because she wasn't growing well. Both were delivered vaginally 9hrs with first & 5hrs with second of total L&D. They were actually really enjoyable birthing experiences!

This little bean is due in 9 days, and I wouldn't be opposed to scheduling another induction if need be; but we would prefer not to.

i was induced, and after 12 hours (and them forcing my water to break) the night shift nurse asked if the morning nurse ever gave me a u/s (apparently it is required at the hospital I was at) and when I said no she muttered some stuff about the other nurse and it turns out my son was breech. He had flipped from the 20wk scan and after being checked maybe 10 times someone realizes why with pitocin and water breaking and everything else why I was only 3cm. And, I had to have the c section that night after all that trauma (in my book at least) because they broke my water.

#1DS after 2 days of induction + 24hours of my own labor *i thot it was just extra Pitocin still in my body (i was young & did not understand)* and 2hours & 13mins pushing ....I delivered vaginally with no pain meds with vaccum asst

"Bug" was born at 38weeks he was
7lbs 9.5oz
21" long
13 1/2" head
13" chest

ending up on Life flight into a level 3 NICU had nothing to do with his birth:thumbsup:
http://babiesonline.com/babies/b/bluedragonfly/

My #2ds measured 4days too small for my LMP in the being ....
Middle way he was 2weeks too big for my LMP ....
In the last month he was 3weeks 5 days to big....
They "moved" my due date from the 26th of July to 10th of July .....

when i did not go into labor on my own they induced for 1.5days and i "had" him via c-section due to him having cord warped around his neck and 14.5" head & chest .....

he was
8lbs 11oz
21 1/4"long
14.5" head & chest
@ 39weeks 0 days via my LMP

I KNOW the c-section i end up having to have was due to the size of his head & the cord looped around his neck......not the induction ..... when the docs opened me up they decided my MAX size for a baby's head to pass was 13.5inches hits why #1DS end up spending so long in the canal and vacuumed assisted:banghead:

I was induced with my first.
All they needed to get me going was pop my water!
DD was born 7hrs later!

With my second, I went into labor naturally....Ok....I lie. I did castor oil, nipple stimulation, walking, sex, jumping jacks....but it wasn't MEDICALLY induced....
When I got the hospital I was 4cm, doing good, so they broke my water to get things going.
Labor stalled, then they gave me pitcoin (OUCH!).
Both were vaginal!

I had a bit of a traumatic induction:crying: . First of all I was not fully informed about my induction, yes I should have asked more questions but I was naive (Yea 1st baby!!!) and thought my previous OB only had my best interest in mind. He induced me at 39 weeks and I had 13 hours of back to back contractions to go on top of very painful back labor. There was no reason to induce me except that I found out it was quite common place with this particular OB. He liked to keep his weekends as free as possible:fit: .

But it did not involve a CS but I did hemmorage and tear:ahh:

but in the end I have a beautiful daughter and am much much wiser now!:happyclap:

I believe that c-sec are higher risk with primips as opposed to multips. I was induced with my 3rd (for probable macrosomia at 40wk1day- definitely NOT late) and had no problems, though I did have two 9 pound vaginal births previously. I would NEVER recommend that a first time mom have an elective induction- especially before the due date! :yuck: Too risky, IMHO.

I've been induced three times, no problems. Had I not been induced I may have needed C-sections as the babies were big, 1st one induced 6 days early 9 lbs 5 oz, 2nd induced 2 weeks early 8 lbs 6 oz, third induced 6 days early was 8 pounds. None were coming out anytime soon on their own.

I did have a C-section. I was 1 cm and not effaced at all when they induced but I was 41wks and had preeclampsia. 2 rounds of pitocin (but nothing to "ripen" my cervix :headscratch:) later they broke my water and DS fell into a bad position, got stuck and about 20 hours later we had a C-section.

Next time there will be no induction and no artificial ruptures. I am convinced that the whole thing was destined to fail, DS was up HIGH and clearly my cervix was not ready yet. My doctor wsa awesome, it was the other people there that sucked.

I had a healthy 9lb, 4oz - 22.5in baby boy after 30+hours of labor. His apgars were 1 & 7. He spent the first night in the NICU, due to spinal surgeries my epidural was either too strong or failing, and DS was SO stuck they had to push UP on him while they were pulling him out - I wasn't numb there at all. They knocked me out and I couldn't really be with him until the next day.

I just know a lot more next time, I felt really bad about how everything happened with DS and I will definately be more stubborn and I'll stick to my guns next time.

I had my water broken and did not have a C/S. I was offered one ( thanks but no thanks!). I delivered a 9lb 2oz baby with help from a vaccum. DS was not positioned right and had an arm over his head, and when he was born the doctor pulled on it and I tore quite a bit. I think if I had gone a couple days longer he would gotten into the right position and I wouldn't have pushed forever.

I was induced at 37 1/2 weeks with my DD b/c she was estimated to be over 9 lbs already. I started out closed and only 10% effaced. three doses of cytotec, 12 hours on pit and one c-section later, I had her. I contracted regularly, but they were weak contractions. I never dilated at all...My body just wasn't ready to have her. I got the whole your pelvis is too small line after the fact (which personally I do NOT believe). She was only 7lbs 6 ozs and I am 5'6" tall. When I have my next, we are going to have a homebirth and I will NEVER be induced again unless there is a real medical necessity.

To be honest, I find it pretty shocking that so many mamas on here are induced because their babes are too big... I haven't heard of such a thing happening here, but I sincerely hope it doesn't. It's a terrible excuse for doing something so unnecessary.

Well, I have already posted about inductions and NO c/sections. I am however dealing with a severe birth trauma because I SHOULD have been given a c/section instead of just getting my water broken with ds2. I was 37 weeks pregnant, ton of health issues {PreEclampsia which was really undiagnoised HELLP Syndrome, blood transfusion BEFORE induction, etc}.
If I could do it all over again.. I would DEMAND that I get a c/section. I ended up with such a horrible trauma plus ongoing health problems that probably could have easily been avoided by either being induced earlier {like I had asked} or getting the c/section. I will say that NONE of us thought the baby was as large as he was. {I just turned 37 weeks and his birth weight was 9lbs. 5.8ozs}. I do not do well with having babies over 8lbs vaginally. {I almost bled to death, so that is why I am usually induced before the babies get so large}. I am a great example of why some people can't have large babies. This was the 2nd labor/birth were the baby was too big to be born vaginally for me. Yes they both came out, but at what cost? I am fully in support of inducing large babies earlier and/or c/section if necessary. While you may not think it is a good reason, "I" who has large babies and almost dies during the horrible births, thinks quiet differently!

I'm sure there are cases where it is necessary, but for the majority of women who are capable of birthing their large babies (or not so large, as ultrasounds are inaccurate and the babies are often smaller than expected), it's an unnecessary trauma to both mother and babe. In your shoes, I would have just demanded a c-section. It's well within your rights to do so.

I just feel it's a shame that doctors tell women so often their bodies are "incapable" of birthing the natural way, or that their babies are too big, their pelvises too small, etc... it is no wonder hospital birth with an OB can be so traumatizing and unempowering.

With DD#1 I experienced prodromonal labor for about 2 weeks. At my 40 week checkup I was 4cm dilated and had high blood pressure and had gained 9 lbs of water in 1 week. My midwife sent me directly to the hospital. They hooked me up to pitocin at 2:30pm, broke my water at 4:30PM, she she was born at 8:30pm after 6 hours. This all happened before I knew any better, but I did end up being lucky (probably because I was already 4cm). I know many people who were induced and did end up with a c/s (a couple of good friends, my aunt, and my mom are all examples). I believe statistically 40% of inductions end up in c/s. DD#2 decided to come completely on her own at 38 weeks. She pretty much fell out 6 hours after I felt my first contraction. It was nothing compared to those darn pitocin ones!

Induced with #1. Pitocin started at about 8am and I vaginally delivered at 3:12pm. It was wonderful!!

I was induced (because she was 7 days late) at 6:00 pm. and delivered at 9:15 pm. But it was my third baby and I have a history of rapid births. I delivered 10 minutes after my water broke.

I, personally, don't feel it's a good idea to have an induction for your first birth. Why do doctors do that?!? Ok, don't get me started. My niece just got induced for her fist birth and ended up with a C-section. :(

With #1 I went almost three weeks overdue and then had my water break without actually going into labour so I was induced. After 12 hours I had only progressed to 2 cm (meaning no progression at all). I had an epidural then slept for 1 hour, woke up 10 cm dialated. Delivered a 9 lb 6 oz girl with no troubles other than a rotten episiotomy. 2nd birth was much the same (induced this time for a blood clot). No progression until the epidural and then 45 minutes later I was ready to push out my 8 lb 2 oz "preemie". I delivered without an episiotomy (thank goodness) and with a midwife and it was fantastic.

I'm hoping not to be induced this time, but I haven't found it to be a bad thing. My sister has been induced four times (she goes over her dates) and no problems for her either.

DH left on an 18 month deployment when I was 8 weeks pregnant with ds. The only way he was assured to be there for the birth was with an induction. If I had it to do over again I would have canceled the induction at the last minute. The doc had stripped my membranes the day I went in and I was having strong regular contrax, that I was not feeling(well only about 1 in 10 of them). I went in at 6pm for the induction, ROM at 6 a.m. pit was started at 8 am. I had DS at 4:16pm with a vacuum assist due to his continually low heartrate. The same moment he popped out the c-section team came running in the room. Unknown to me the doc had told the nurse to call them. So no surgery for me, but it almost happened. It took me close to a year to get over feeling guilty about my choices and how traumatic it was.

I was induced with pit at 42 weeks 1 day. I didn't have a c/s, however, I would have had one if my mother hadn't been there. The dr. decided it had been to long and I needed one, but my mom talked her into letting me go a little longer (I had been induced about 27hrs earlier and they had also broken my water, I was at 9cm). The dr. gave in, and my dd was born 3 hrs later.

First birth was natural, no pit, 12 hr labor.
Second birth was induced 1 day after EDD bc of my son being so big, I was already 2 cm and thin, my labor and delivery was 4 hours, vaginal and natural.
Third, I was in prelabor, I guess, contrax for several hours, went to hossy, was the same as my appt 2 days earlier, Dr came 2 hours later, was still 2 cm but now more thinned, so she wanted me to stay bc of how quick I deliver after my water breaks, she helped "speed things along" with pit and 7 hours later, Emma was born vaginal and natural, 15 hours total.
I think a lot of C Sections has to do with epidural use and your cervix when you are induced

Induced and ended in a c-section. DS wasn't coming out with my few pushes. I don't believe I got pit, just the pill in the vagina a couple times. When he was born, he didnt even have a conehead from getting stuck in the canal and his head was HUGE (he has his dad's head! lol). With DS2, we had a scheduled c-section. I was induced with all of my kids.

DD#1 was overdue by a week, and induced for a combo of that and size. Cervidil at 2am, Pitocin at 9am, 15 minutes of pushing, baby by noon. :)

DD#2 was induced at 39 weeks for gestational diabetes. Cytotec somewhere around 9am I think, no Pit until WAY later, baby just before midnight. I didn't even have to push her out; the contractions did it all on their own.

DS was induced at 38 weeks, for size and psychological reasons. (DD#2 died, I had some anxiety/stress/depression issues.) Epidural first (yay!), broke my water and hooked up the Pit at 11am, baby out within an hour, two pushes.

FTR, I had epidurals with all three.

My body, for some reason, takes REALLY well to induction.

I was induced with my 1st and 3rd babies and have never had a c-section.

My 1st was pretty intense. She was in distress and they started me on Pit and it was rough. I almost had an emergency c-section because her heart rate kept dropping when I would have contrax, but they had me change positions and she liked that better. They did use the forceps to deliver her.

I was also induced with my 3rd at 37 weeks due to IUGR. I delivered him vaginally and unmedicated. :)

I don't think induction leads to c-sections as much as people think, especially if you have Docs that are willing to allow your body to go through the process and not hurry things along. But if induction can be avoided, that's always the best way to go.

Induced, no c-section.

Went in for the induction at 7:30 p.m. on Wedneday, started the Pitocin at 10 a.m. on Thursday. DD born just before 2 p.m. on Friday.

Very long labor, but DD was stuck and my doctor allowed her to figure out where she needed to go... she was also posterior for a lot of labor.

I had an epidural around midnight on Thursday/Friday, because my body was exhausted and I needed rest.

In retrospect - won't be getting an epidural next time, b/c it messed with my blood pressure (it's low naturally and it made it lower... dangerously low) and I didn't like feeling like I wasn't in control.

No c-section though. Did bleed out after delivery, which may or may not be related to the long labor and complications.

I was induced w/ my dd. She was 10 days over. Went in at 7:30am on a Friday. Started the pit about 9am. Was in very active labor w/ contractions about 1 min apart by 2pm and ended up taking the epidural because I was only dilated to to a 5 after 8 hours. DD was delivered vag the next day around 9am. The midwifwe was worried that I would have to have a c-section because my labor was taking so long to progress. For the next baby I don't know if I would have an epidural again. I didn't like feeling like a turtle on my back, but it did help me rest so I could push the baby out and not have the c-section.

I personally think it depends on if it is a first baby or not- I have read that induced 1st babies are much more likely to be C-sections.

My 2nd was induced, but he was 2 weeks past EDD and I made them turn the pit off after a few hours and labored on my own from there. All 3 of my borths were vaginal.

I will not let anyone induce me again w/out a clear medical reason.

Both of my SIL's were induced (first babies) and both ended in c-sections.
They both had epis too, so that may play a role in it. I strongly feel that inductions and epidurals *can* lead to C-sections- most especially the induction b/c pit can stress a baby out- one big reason for c-sections "baby in distress". The BIGGEST reason non-planned C-sections are performed is "failure to progress", which actually means "Dr. needs to get home for dinner". Labor can take days, but once you go in for an induction, the clock starts ticking.

I was induced with my first two (pitocin), and had both vaginally.

I was induced at 41 weeks and did not have a c-section.
I was induced with pitocin and gave birth 5 1/2 hours after they put the IV in my hand.

I was induced w/both my sons and luckily had them both vaginally. With my 2nd however I didn't get epidural because when they broke my water I went from a 4 to a 10 in half an hour. So next time I'm having them give me the epidural before they break my water.

I have been induced 4x. The last one this past October. All ended in vaginal births, thankfully! I have to say, I did not see a difference in labor between my non induced vs. my induced births.

I was induced with DS1 just before 37 weeks because my water was leaking and I was having unproductive contractions.I had my baby 8.5 hours later. I wish I had turned down the induction though - if I had stopped to look at family history, my mom's water had leaked for a week before I was born. She was also at a steady 2cm for weeks and one day felt herself to straight to 10cm. And I quote, "It was the weirdest feeling, ever!" I know how to monitor for signs of infection - I wish I hadn't gone to the hospital to check if it was amniotic fluid.

nope. my friend went into labor but got hooked up to pit when we got there and ended up with a csection due to an idiot ob with her first. (the woman is obsessed with teen mamas having csections and will make up ANY reason to do it. if youre overweight though, she will try to force vaginal even if youre both literally dying because its "hard" cant stand that woman, i swear...)

my DS was 10 days late and I had not had any signs of labor. I was induced and 4.5 hours later he was born vaginally with less than 5 minutes of pushing, it was a very intense labor.

I was induced at 41 wks, 3 days. I had pit and labored forever - 26 hrs.
I was so thankful that I got the chance to vaginally deliver because we were very close to getting a c-section.

My intentions were to have a unmedicated natural labor. But I made a pact with my OB that I would not go past my due date. So come my due date, I was induced.

Went into hospital at 5am. I asked the nurse setting up everything what she felt to rate of C-sections were for inductions in that hospital - she said 50%.
OB came in at 7am broke my bag of waters and started PIT.
I moved ALOT during labor in order to do my best to NOT have a C-section (birthing ball, squatting, help of a doula, etc).
Come 2:30pm, the contractions became too much for me to handle with my mom & DH breaking down as well.
Epidural came in around 3:00.
My right side was not numb until 4:45.
I reached 10cm and started pushing at 5:00.
DS was born vaginally at 5:15pm.
He was 9lbs 5oz. He got stuck & forceps were used to get him out.

Doula & nurse agreed with me that had I not be up and active through most of the labor, I probably would have had a C-section.

If you get induced STAY ACTIVE IN LABOR!!

I was induced for both of my kids and both ended in vaginal delivery with no complications. Though there are a few things that I would have changed with my son's induction now that I have been through a much more pleasant labor and delivery with my daughter.

I was induced for my 2nd and it took 32.5 hours to have him. 27 of which were unmedicated besides the pitocin. Ugh...never doing that again! BUt I am soooo thankful I ended up with a vaginal birth afterall.

I've been induced twice and neither ended up a c-section. They were actually faster labors than my natural one (6 hrs and 3 hrs, compared to 8 hrs).

Doesn't apply to me personally but of all my friends and family who have been induced (several cousins) only 1 has birthed vaginally. I was like totally shocked because up until that point I honestly had no experience with it ever "taking".

i was induced three times - all three times were VBACs (only my first was a c-section, and i wasn't induced for that one!)

I was induced, delivered vaginally and it was most wonderful experience. My epidural wore completely off before I even started pushing, I pushed for 3 hours and there he was. I personally would def be induced again.

I started having contractions 4 hours after getting the IV and 4 hours after that I had DS1.

My natural labor was 4 hours as well, it was just as intense and painful as my first.

I was induced with dd2 and dd3. Dd2 for no reason that we were all ready and the Dr. was willing to do it 3 days before my EDD. From the time they started the pit to delivery it was 3 hrs and I only pushed 2 times.

DD3 was b/c I had sciatica so bad I couldn't even walk. It was a week before my EDD and I had to crawl to the bathroom at night. Her labor was 7hrs and I pushed 2 times.

With this one I will NOT be induced. I want to go into labor on my own, when my body and the baby are ready. If I have sciatica again, I will go and see a chiro. :goodvibes:

I was induced with #4 but I progressed quickly and did not have a C-section. He was 8 days overdue and I was dilated at 3 cm (for about 3 weeks) but for some reason he was just too cozy to come out without some help.

I was very sick with at cold when I was 36 weeks. I had a very bad hacking cough.
One night I had a coughing fit and wet myself. I thought it was pee (normal at that point). But when I stood up it felt like I was peeing myself again and I couldn't stop it. I got up and went to the potty and wiped- nothing. Went back to bed and started to feel cramping. I watched the clock and timed them to be 3-4 minutes apart but not real strong and not any real duration. I got back up and went to the potty again and wiped, this time I had a tiny little red streak that was barely visable- in fact I thought it was a tiny piece of fuzz. So I wiped so more and the more I wiped the more I got. I decided to see if my vag felt wet and it did. The next time I wiped I got a glob of mucous. This is the point we decided to go to the hospital.
I was checked, it was amniotic fluid, but I wasn't in labor. I was only dilated 1 centimeter but only about 10% effaced and baby was still very high. Since my water was broke and I wasn't in labor I was admitted and induced.
The cervadil was put in around 3am, I got the epidural at 8am and the pitocin was started. I had her 3 hours later. Born in 3 pushes. I should only hope the next ones are so easy!!

this is me almost exactly, except I only pushed for an hour and 15 minutes. All in all, it took about 8 hours, and I would say it was a good experience.

I had my first 2 vaginally (1st with an epidural, 2nd with nothing)

I was induced with my 3rd because I was a week over and the doc was concerned about my blood pressure and what not, began at 6am had her vaginally at 1:40 pm....

I was induced with my 4th for no reason other then the doc liked schedules I guess.... started at 6am.... nothing but pain for hours and hours, yet I was not dialating, they kept upping the epidural because it was not working and I was a teansy bit crabby :) I was only at 4cm at 8pm... finally the epi worked and I was feeling good, but I did not feel dd coming, they were concerned because they lost her heart beat and kept making me change position, put me on oxygen because I started panicking and my heart rate sky rocketed..... finally someone decided to check (duh!) and her comes baby, I had went from 4cm to ready to go in an hour! she was born at 9:20 pm, the nurse said i was minutes away from a c-section.... that was a long day...

My 5th will not be induced unless I have no choice but I prefer him or her to come when he or she is ready... and I'm going natural.... I never want to feel the fear I did with number 4!

I was induced with DS#3 as they had been monitoring me via u/s for a month and according to the u/s had not gained any weight during that time, nor had his height changed. He was labeled IUGR.

Yup, me too. They "induced" me, but my body quickly took over and the rest of the birth was all natural.

to add to this thread...

bff was just induced w/ pit and AROM and "failed to progress" past 8 and her cervix started to swell and bam...c/s for a 1st time mom that was totally avoidable. she had no reason to induce except that it was just before Christmas...go figure.

I'm sure nobody will get to reading this far (considering how many of us answered the Adult ADD thread with, I can't even finish reading this thread :giggle:)

I was induced with both. DS at 38 weeks. I went in a 5:30 (I think), started pitocin at 6:00 and had him at 12:07. So, I had about 6 hours of labor.

I was induced with DD at 39 weeks. I went in at 6:00. I started pitocin at about 6:30. I had her at 10:12 am. So, with her I had about 4 hours of labor.

If we get to have another, I am betting on 2 hours of labor. Is that enough time to get an epi?
